Whilst waiting for my friend to arrive before doing some shopping, I decided to go into my favourite game centre to waste some time, and I was greeted by a brand new 4-player Daytona USA cabinet!!!
I think it was a test version, Sega often use that particular game centre to test multiplayer shooting / racing games. The game is exactly the same the original version, but the cabinet has been updated and the gear stick feels more realistic. After playing it, it seemed like they had changed something, but I couldn't tell whether it was a genuine change or whether their was something wrong about my memory of how the game felt (it's been a long time since I played Daytona USA!). The graphics looked a little sharper, and there was a little pop-up - although I'm certain that this was intentional to keep it true to the original, today's technology shouldn't have any pop-up problems when running a game so old!
Was it called Sega Racing Classic? As I understand it, Sega lost the Daytona license and decided to re-release Daytona with a title update and without the original soundtrack. What a pity...

I love the units with the force feedback wheel and seat. One of the best arcade machines ever built. If they made it better, I'd really want to play on one. I wouldn't say a change of soundtrack is all that bad. "Daaaaaay-Tooooo-Naaaaa..." It gets on the nerves.

Yes, I'm 99% sure it was called that - and I think the soundtrack was the change that I felt!!

No original soundtrack? No thanks. Good thing a lot of Daytona USA machines are still out on route, making money to this day.

Daytona USA is a trademark of the Daytona Motor Speedway from what I remember. Same goes with the logo. Used to be the name of the museum at the speedway as well, but that was changed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytona_500_Experience).

I'm no lawyer, but believe NASCAR controls Daytona International Speedway and the trademark to Daytona. I believe the city is actually called "Daytona Beach."

Right company, wrong game.
The new Daytona, or Sega Racing Classic as it were, has been out for a little while now, the news at least. It doesn't look far removed, graphically from original Daytona, perhaps some touching up has been done. Apart from that, the only benefit I see are new cabinets. Otherwise if the original music is lacking then that's a letdown on top of the fact nothing (apparently has been done to add or improve to the original game, even though it's pretty damn good to begin with) new is here.

The Daytona International Speedway is owned and operated by the International Speedway Corporation, who also operate several other speedways on the NASCAR tour, such as Talladega. The company was founded by NASCAR's founder for the express purpose of constructing Daytona in the 1950's, and has since expanded and operates or has operated numerous circuits around the country. Only about 1/3 of the stock remains with the France family, with the rest freely traded on the stock market.
Sega is cheap and has done this project as cheaply as possible. No one has an exclusive license for the race course. In fact, at least 4 companies currently have an active license for the property (Electronic Arts, The Sim Factory, iRacing, and Polyphony Digital/Sony Computer Entertainment). I doubt they even tried to relicense the property.
Anyone know why the music was changed? Sega's music was typically created inhouse specifically for a game. Was Daytona different and utilized licensed music? It's been years since I've seen a Daytona coin op first hand.

I think they were just scared they'd get sued for using a song which mentions a trademark owned by someone else. :(

Well, the main track does say "DaytoooooonaaaAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" so if they are getting away from the Daytona name, that would be the first place to start.

Like I said, I haven't touched a Daytona cabinet in quite sometime.

Well, NASCAR pretty much equals the France family. Big Bill's granddaughter runs ISC and his grandson runs NASCAR, unless big Bill is France Jr.

Of course, but it's also true that the France family only holds a minority stake in ISC these days, with the majority of the corporation's stock being publically traded. It has close ties to NASCAR, but is still a separate entity and is the corporation responsible for licensing the associated intellectual property rights with it's speedways.

Am I reading this correctly, SEGA released Daytona USA *new* in the arcade? It's an outdated game, especially graphically. Is this like the newer Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga cabinets?

I had no idea it had been out for a while, I assumed it was a test version as I'd not seen the new version around anywhere before.
What did you think of the handling? Did you like the feel of the gear stick?

Was the framerate still locked at 60fps?
I remember reading about one of the loke tests for this game, and they said that the framerate stuttered a bit.
There was also the suggestion that it was running through emulation, and at a higher resolution than the original game.
