Hello all,

I stumbled across a couple of mentions of the Sega RingWide/RingEdge projects and wondered what the latest status was. I can't find anything real clear on them there internetz about whether or not these projects are headed for home consoles or not.

Can someone out there who knows fill me in? Or point me to a thread that is already discussing this?

Thanks,
Jaysen

As far as I'm aware, Ringwide/Ringedge details haven't been updated in a while. I have seen patents for controllers, flash cards, and a hard drive but beyond that there haven't been any details.

The patent info is here, btw:

For what its worth, I don't think Sega's going to be releasing a new console. I don't know what these patents would be for, but I really doubt it's a new system. Now, if I'm wrong, I'll be thrilled, but I think it's just been too long and that the competition from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo would be way too steep at the moment.

I believe they are the new arcade boards...

They are arcade boards, and there's already one RingEdge game out (Border Break). In all honesty they're both completely unnecessary; Sega has too many arcade boards.

Sorry, no new console... Just more arcade hardware.

Sega Racing Classic is supposedly going to be for the RingWide board, but it hasn't been definitively confirmed.

I guess the Europa-R hardware (of Sega Rally 3 fame) is to die a quick death.

I don't think Sega should keep flogging the same classic joystick + button combination or lightguns that have been rocking the scene for nearly two decades.

I think part of the reason people haven't been spending more time in arcades is that there haven't been new ideas from Sega after they were so successful early on with vehicle games like the first "full-body" arcade experience, Hang-On; we're still waiting on a full-sized motorcycle attachment for the Wii but the board with the latest Tony Hawk is a sign that home games are getting more accessorized. I think that moving forward from the same old is the bare minimum for arcade games to compete with options at home.

Do you guys remember the R360? That was Sega, wasn't it? That game was pretty nutty...and amazing. Maybe they figure that they hit the apex with that way back in...what, 1989 or so? And now there's no need to try anything further. haha.

Thanks for the console info everyone. I hadn't poked around anything Sega related for a while, so when I saw that, I got a bit excited. But yes...I agree that it is probably not going to happen. Love the old Sega...still sad to have seen it go. :(

I don't see how that has anything to do with having a number of different arcade boards. I see no reason that Sega Rally 3 and Border Break couldn't have been on the same hardware. Sega's arcade division would benefit from having another Naomi. Having RingEdge and RingWide and Lindbergh and Aurora and Europa-R doesn't do them any good, IMO.

You know Sega's not happy unless it's overextending itself with hardware.

A new home console would be a dream come true. Imagine a PS4 killer?

New arcade ideas are coming out. It may not be all Sega. Other companies are pumping out awesome arcade games as well:
