hi everybody!
I was talking about old arcade games with a co-worker here, and he told me about this one game he used to play when he was a kid (early 80s) that he's never been able to find and can't for his life remember its name.
it doesn't ring a bell to me either... maybe it does to some of you! :)

he remembers two stages.
the first was a guy throwing boxes/parcels to a ship. he remembers you had to perfectly line up the boxes with the ship, or else they wouldn't get into it.
the second stage was about a series of platforms. you were on the bottom of the screen, trying to build your way up to the top, where there was some dude throwing barrels at you. no, it's not Donkey Kong :)
every time he threw a barrel, certain parts of the platforms would disappear. so you had to take the barrels and throw them back at him.

that's all he remembers about it, I haven't been able to help him.
any ideas?
thanks a lot!

Is it one of the two games listed here? Pirate Ship Higemaru or Higemaru Makaijima?

thanks! but no... he says the graphics were way more rudimentary, very blocky, so it might even be from the late 70s. I'm not very knowledgeable about arcade games pre-1984 besides the obvious ones, so I have no idea.

he also remembers an arcade game about a non-scrolling screen, where you control a ship at sea-level, throwing bombs to submarines beyond sea-level, which also throw stuff at you in return. any ideas about this one?

thanks again!

I think this was part of a MAME club thing we did semi-recently. Port Man?

I'm not at work anymore and I'll be on holidays for a couple weeks, so I won't be totally sure until then, but... damn, it's got to be it!
my pal even drew me the sprite of the main character and it looked exactly like the one in the screenshot with the ladders. nice memory he's got :)
never heard of it myself anyway.
thanks a lot everybody!

Bless the MMC. Port Man was the first thing to pop into my head as well. Not a terrible game either.

Dunno about the first, but the second sounds like Destroyer

Hmm, the only problem with Destroyer is that the subs don't fire back. This man's memory is good so I wonder if there's not another game.

There's plenty of submarine warfare games (I can think of a few others) but they usually put you in the role of the sub.

The closest game I can think of to Destroyer is Blue Shark, which plays similarly but looks totally different (plus you're shooting up from the bottom of the screen).

Don't forget Deep Scan by Sega.
