At the suggestion of others people I picked up some 'goo gone', for about 4 bucks, and applied some to stickers on snes carts and noticed that there seemed to be more glue coming off it then was on it. After a few minutes I applied some to a part of the case where no sticker was and was shocked when it melted the plastic.
Is there a SAFE way to use this stuff? I got the kind in a metal container, figured it was cheaper and well... obviously not safer.
Can i dillute this in water or something or do i need to go back to walmart and return it for something else that doesnt melt the game.
Im glad i tried it on a cheap game and not on something like FF2 or 3.

That's odd. I've used it on plastic before and never had that problem. You can probably dilute it but it doesn't take much to begin with. It's also pretty messy stuff and you usually have to clean up the Goo Gone afterwards. Could you maybe take a picture so we can see what kind of melting your describing?
By the way, I buy mine at the dollar store.
Edit--
I just checked their site. Apparently you can't dilute it in water since it's oil based. I also couldn't find anything about it not being safe on plastic. You didn't pick up Goo Gone Industrial by any chance did you? It comes in a metal can.

The kind in a metal container? The stuff I always pick up is in plastic containers, and I've never seen Orange Glo/Goo Gone/whatever kind of orange cleanser in a metal container. It sounds like you picked up some sort of caustic chemical or undiluted product...

It's not the right product then, I've never seen Goo Gone sold in a metal container. I've used Goo Gone on plastic carts all the time and there's been no problems. You have to be careful around labels, but that's it. After using it I wash it off with soap and water using a paper towel, I make sure to clean off the Goo Gone as it seems greasy to me and I don't want it to sit on labels too long.

Sounds like you bought goof off, which is indeed more powerful than Goo Gone, and will indeed melt plastics.

Well apparently the guy at walmart gave me the wrong product. There is a Goo Gone, but after reading this, its not the kind I was supposed to get. This one is entitled 'Goo Gone Xtreme Remover' and will melt the plastic on the snes cart. Mostly it becomes dissolved and turns glossy. Im going to go back in there in a few days and return it, then i'll get the proper stuff.
In the meantime, im going to try and clean up the damage the best I can. I'll sandpaper the crud off, then stick it back on the shelf since its not really a 'rare cart'. I'll probably end up with a duplicate of it someday anyways.
Tip: Walmart employee's are full of shit.

it probably had xylene in it. Ive had xylene eat right through carts before.

I've seen that stuff on the shelf right next to the regular Goo Gone, and wondered about it (although I've never picked it up). Rest assured though Regular Goo Gone (in the plastic bottles) will not damage your carts or DVD/Video game keep cases. I use it all the time.

Goo Gone will screw up cartridge labels too.

Lol Goo Gone extreme will also mess up your game discs too. I accidently had a dvd lieing upside down and it spilt out when I was using it as it does take the stickers off of my cases and well it dumped right on one of my gamecube discs and needless to say the games layer on the dvd melted right off. Good thing it was an old sports game.

Technically, anything liquid will screw up cartridge labels considering that they're printed materials.
Goo Gone's made to remove anything with glue, so it would make sense that it would screw up any cartridge label.

You have to be judicious in use when there is a label you want removed that is laying over a label you want to keep. Cotton swabs and fast dexterous hands FTW!
