Hey classic gurus,
We just finished up some review action on Yobo's new Fc16go handheld Super Nintendo and what to share so finer points on it as well as give you a visual of what you can see, hear and expect!
Take a look:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75taxTPTSoQ
I'd like to hear any questions or feedback. I know a second model is coming out, but I was pretty happy with this one suprisingly.
We are currently trying to test out Super Famicom games with it!

I'm still watching it, but I like the review.
One suggestion: add subtitles. I have serious problem understanding spoken english from a not-live person (musics, movies, videos etc), so the subtitle would help A LOT.
I'm really interested in a system like this. I may buy one soon. :)

I was pretty satisfied as well, but I strongly disagree about the on-board d-pad. I think it stinks. It's too mushy and you have to really press it for the game to register. The wireless controllers are fantastic, though.

Really liked it.
I just missed a close-up on the screen, wanted to check the video quality on it.
And the small L and R buttons worries me.

Screen really isn't all that great. It's ok, but a little on the blurry side. I haven't had a problem with the L and R buttons yet. Just the onboard d-pad. I hit it, nothing...I really mash it in, game registers the button press.
I did have the original Street Fighter 2 crap out on me. I wasn't even holding the system, but was playing with the wireless controllers. Reset the cartridge and played through the game fine after that.

I can understand that, but you are never going to have 110% satisfaction on a clone because it's just that ..a clone. So if you are substituting the clone for the real thing, then it's not worth it. However if you are collecting them for novelty and convenience of not having to lug around your originals, then it's always a good investment if the quality is somewhat there.

Well I have an original SNES, and I have a Nomad so I have a portable Genesis, I would like to have a portable SNES too, so the FC16-Go sort of appeals to me like no other clone does. Is there a incompatibility list?

I've uncovered one small but unfortunate incompatibility. In Super Ghouls N Ghosts, the third boss is invisible. I'm guessing that means it's impossible to get beyond that point.

Sounds like a problem I have encountered with The Magic Quest Starring Mickey Mouse... Unfortunately it happens on all systems, clone or not. I think ill make a thread about this oddity sometime as I found that screwattack encountered the same thing and I would like to get some insight.

I tried it in the RetroDuo and it had the same problem. I put the game in my original SNES and thankfully it played normally. I guess it's like the Battletoads thing on NES clones. Maybe Capcom was doing something unconventional with Mode 7 on those SNES titles. It's a very odd glitch for sure.

We are working on the compatibility list. Right now we are testing Super Famicom games. However the unit out the box will not play Super Famicom games without modification to the unit or a cart converter.

I don't really know why the clone-producing companies keep the tabs on the unit. Do they think that the little plastic tabs are there for some other reason? My best guess is that Yobo (and others) keep the tabs there for safety reasons-- they probably don't want to be liable for people destroying the unit.
Or is it something else? Is there something other than those little tabs there to keep PAL & Japanese games from working?

I wouldn't put much stock in what he says. He has already been caught in a few lies over on the AtariAge.com boards.
Not to mention he stole my store's watermarked images that we took to use for his FC-16 Go on his store site and won't take them down after I asked quite a few times.
By the way I called Yobo. They currently have no second model planned. Although I have heard Hyperkin and Innex are working on their own.

Ah. I seeeeeee....
That's probably what he meant by "second model" ... all of the clone companies capitalizing on the current US market seem to be playing "me too" with every new release.

Stoneage Flamer is the mis-informed one. He gets misconstrued info from half way across the country. I work in Silicon Valley and speak to all the game manufacturers on a daily basis from Madcatz to Yobo to Hyperkin.
I was informed that their "second-model" is more of a revision, basically with the points I described in the video. For instance the bigger triggers and re-location of the AC plug. Though that is the basically the major revisions that I was told were coming down the pipe. I still feel like this unit is quality even without those revisions. Though they did not give me an exact date of when they plan to release them.
The tabs are there to stabilize the cartridge, though it would have been nice to directly put the Jap SFC carts in directly without a converter!

Let's no go there. Anyone with access to Google can see for themselves what went down with VideoGameCentral and all that, and StoneAge and the other stores and company reps that have posted on this forum have already proven their credibility.
The short story is, FC 16 Go is alright and benefits from being the only portable SNES in town, but there are other machines down the pipe from Hyperkin and Innex, and I think for anyone on the fence, it couldn't hurt to wait and see.

Well I do know Innex and Hyperkin are working on their own version. All 3 companies will soon be bidding on next years supply of SNES chips, because only 50K can be made per year by Ricoh.
I did call Yobo to confirm what you said and they would not. There have been things you lied about before so I assumed you may be lying about this. If I am wrong in this instance then I apologize.
Just because you live on the west coast doesn't mean you're more in tune with anything. There are these things called phones and this amazing network of computers called the Internet. I use them often.
Yobo may indeed be working on a revision. However, when it will come out is unknown to me. Maybe when you're at Yobo showing them your design plans you can get the inside scoop.

It's probably none of my business, but since it's in a public forum I'll butt in anyways. Hopefully I don't make it any worse.
My opinion is that the two of you might want to take this fued to personal messages or email. I have no doubt both of you are honest, and I appreciated the information from both of you, including Old_Skool_Fool's video review. And I'd have no worries ordering this product from StoneAgeGamer.
But all this drama in public isn't helping either of you look very professional or lending more credibility to either one of you to new users opening up this thread because they're interested in this product, or to the people watching this thread who are on the fence about ordering this product.

As far as I am concerned this is case closed and hopefully for good. Hopefully we can now continue to discuss the FC-16 Go and not concern ourselves with anymore drama.
Thanks again to anyone who supported me here and over at AA.

Hey Stone Age Gamer: Do you have any free shipping codes going on right now for your site? I am wanting to order a FC-16 go and an FC Mobile 2 (or Retro Mini X) but the cheapest option for me is at VideoGameCentral.com where I can get the FC-16 Go and Retro Mini X for $100.77 after $13.79 for standard shipping. I priced the FC-16 Go and FC Mobile 2 at your site for $101.98 but shipping adds another $20.15 for a total of $122.13. I would rather order off your site as you are a regular around here who seems to be trustworthy but I also want to get the best deal. Thanks

Yeah we have a 10% off code, normally these are only given on a sticker on your shipping box, but for your support here it is: DJ113
Also if you watch the review thats on the FC-16 Go page of our site there is a $4 OFF coupon code at the end.

I pasted in the 10% off coupon code. The $4 off code would not stack, was able to use one or the other. It came out to $111, however I went ahead and ordered anyway. I appreciate your fast response and feel like I have someone I could talk to if I had any sort of problem with my order. That was more important to me than saving $10.

Very good service. I am confident I made the right decision on where to purchase my two consoles. On a side note, anyone have any idea where to buy a replacement rechargeable battery for the FC-16 Go? I am sure that the battery will last quite a while but it would be nice to know that I can buy a replacement someday when it no longer holds a charge.

I can answer that.
The factories in China are somehow convinced that the SNES chips will fry if a cartridge is plugged into the system backwards. We doubt such a thing ever happens so we ask that they remove the tabs, other companies that don't make similar requests will have the tabs.

Reason why I'm asking is because shipping kinda scared me a bit. Still very interested, though. :)

rodarkone you have been refunded $5.60. Please note that this will not be reflected on your customs form, so you may have to pay taxes on the $55.99.
As for your shipping costs. You did choose Priority. It would have been cheaper if you would have chose First Class, but would have taken longer to get there.

Unfortunatly I didn't understand what are the diference between the 2 shiping options (i picked the better one just because I wanted to be sure to receive my product) - maybe you could make detailed information with the diference between the 2 shiping options.
Anyway - thanks for the refund -
PS: I will come back in february with my order for a portable nes and in march with a portable genesis (when I receive my future paycheck's - we are not verry well remunerated here in Romania :D) - if there are stock problems pls inform me about this 2 products because it's what i need - gaming on the go - i don't have time to play on TV hooked up consoles anymore.

How do you save games? I thought I read that you needed to hold the reset button during the process of saving a game on the PowerPak, and the reset switch on this portable apparantly isn't a true reset switch.

i can't get the powerpak to work with this though? it won't load the games it freezes up.
From what I was able to gather about all the technical aspects of the FC16 Go, it would appear as though the voltage the console runs on is too low because of the screen. A typical Super NES or Super NES clone runs at 5V, but the FC16 Go uses a 3.7V battery to run the entire thing because of the fact that the screen is not designed to work at 5V. As I was able to figure out with my Sega-16 colleagues about the new Genesis clones sold by Hyperkin(GENCore and GENMobile) and RetroBit(FireCore and RetroGEN), those have problems with games like Virtua Racing not due to a hardware incompatibility, but rather due to the voltage on the systems being too low, again at 3.7V as compared to 5V on a real Genesis, just like the FC16 Go compared to a real Super NES. I would not be surprised if that's the reason why the Super NES PowerPak doesn't work. It does appear to be a quite power-hungry cartridge, and if the voltage applied to it isn't high enough, it won't work correctly, if at all. Can someone bust out their multimeter and test the voltage on the cartridge slot to confirm that the cartridge slot is indeed getting 3.7V and not 5V?

Well mine works fine. I have not tried to save yet(on the real system or the protable) so I dont know about that. I tried several games a few times and they worked. I played Aerofighters, Sunsets Riders, and a few others.
I will check out a few more, but I dont know why they wont work if the others do.
Seems like all of mine work. I just play an hour of Sunset Riders. All of these loaded just fine... WaterWorld, Paridous, Micro Machines 2, Axelay, Terranigma, Castlevania Drac X, B.O.B. and a bunch of others.
I did get a bad headed once in awhile but I just restarted it and it loaded fine the second time. Seemed to happen about 1 out of 15 times, but they all loaded the second time.

What is weird is I have had a bad pixel on the screen since I got this at x-mas. After testing all these games, the pixel seems to work now. I dont know if it getting warm help it work, but the same pixel was bad since x-mas. Everytime I powered up, it bugged the hell out of me but know it is gone. I hope it doesnt drop out again. Oh well, very happy with the set-up.

Stuck pixels aren't always permanent, as you've discovered.
I'd love to hear your results if you try a game on your PowerPak that has a save function, since I don't see how it's going to work on the FC16.

Just verified, and it's still nearly $15 for Priority Mail. Other option is Express at $43.
Just in case, my zip code is 00956. Hope it helps.
Also, when I try to add the two discount coupons, only one takes, even though both appear to be "in effect".
Any idea?
EDIT: Also, I just noticed that PR does not appear on the drop down "US STATES" list during checkout. This might be cause of why shipping is still around $15.

Some discount codes cannot be used together. However the ones I stated earlier do as many from the forum have used them together.
Shipping to that zip code is now $13.97. That's the lowest it can go. I checked with our shipping software and this is pretty close to what it costs to ship a 3 pound package via Priority to PR.

I even tried alternating them as a CODE and the other as a GIFT Certificate.
I'm using the same ones listed onthe boards: DJ113 (which if used first gives $6 off) and RTUSAFC16 (which if used second, gives $5.60).
Is this correct?
BTW, the shipping appears as $13.97, so it's good. :)

Concerning the D-pad on this system. Thankfully it is all one piece underneath. I was experimenting this morning. I took a blank DVD case, cut a disc the size of a penny USD. Took some tape and centered this over the four buttons. This creates a better gaming experience. It gives you the sense of more control and accuracy. If you are like me, I use the center of my thumb on a traditional cross button D-pad. That is why I find the four button atrocity so awkward.

Games like Star Fox, R-Type, Gradius, play so much better now. Now I need to figure how to make it permanent.

Ok so I got mine in mail 2 days ago (unfortunatly my postal office customs kept it in their office between 12 and 18 of january -don't know why) and the little thing is a cutie
Not as big as I expected witch is a good thing - and the games are working fine (at least the games I've tryed so far - I don't have too many US SNES games - my collection is almost all PAL games)
A few things thow
1. the NTSC-J games doesn't work (the console has the little protection for the cartriges) - only ntsc can be used
2. the LCD switch is RUBBISH !!! - i tested on my plasma display then I tryed to switch it back and I had only a black - white - green - red screens - but the sound was working fine - I tryed almost all the games - same screens over and over - then I tested on TV and the image was fine, when I force-pushed down the switch I got image (but is was not centered, a few mm were moved to the right) and bingo - the problem is the switch ... I just hate it
3. the butons on the console are not very good - in fact when I've played Rtype it was a real problem to adapt, but on the controler everyting was fine, maybe if a revision is make with better D-pad controls It definitly needs the upgrade :)
4. my conclusion - ... a dream come true (for me) - finaly a portable snes witch works similar with the real thing - so buy it
PS: again I thank to stoneagegamer for his excelent and fast dispach and the protective packing - thumb up :hail:

This is what mine finally ended up looking like.

There is such a world of difference in the D-pad with just this simple mod. It acts and feels more like a traditional pad.
"rodarkone" I think you will have better performance from that switch if you turn the system off before you switch it from TV to LCD.

belive me I've tryed all the posible switching methods -
console off and console on (doesn't seems to be any difference) - maybe my switch is broken or it's not well soldered - who knows - anyway i use it for play on the go so don't care about LCD switch :)

One thing I have always wondered is that if they can put the traditional Nintendo-style d-pad on the wireless controllers included with the system, why do they put that stupid Sony PlayStation style d-pad on the main part of the console?

Me too, my guess is that they think it looks more "modern". Tofu would be a good person to answer this since Hyperkin's FCM2 and the GenMobile both used the PS-style d-pad as well.

Cost.
The factories prefer to make that style of dpad and will raise the cost for anything else.

So it costs more to make a standard Nintendo style d-pad? Then why aren't the controllers also Sony styled?
Kind of weird to cut costs so selectively for only 1/3 of the product.

Well, I opened my FC 16 Go up and tried to tinker with the dpad. Nothing of note, so I put it back together. I think I screwed up my "L" button in the process. Oh well.
Tofu, do you know if Hyperkin's SNES portable is coming out soon? Can you talk about that right now, or is it "mum's the word" until something is announced?

I can't speak for Tofu, but I talk to him 2 or 3 times a week. Well I call it talking, he probably calls it annoying him.
He hasn't mentioned much about the Hyperkin SNESp lately. I think they were bidding on the available SNOAC's since Ricoh can only make a certain amount make per year. I think Yobo, Hyperkin, and Innex are bidding on some.
Don't quote me on that though, I could be completely wrong.
