View Full Version : Do all Game Gears have slippery diagonals?

I'm testing out some Game Gears and trying to take parts from them all to make one good unit for myself (these things are breaking down in droves..). Does anyone else have a problem with the Game Gear's d-pad where you tend to slip into a diagonal movement accidentally?

Of the 3 units I have it seems they all have this problem, one them seems slightly better but it's hard to be certain.

So is this just a general Game Gear problem or are all 3 of my systems too worn?

I'm not entirely sure if it is a common problem with the systems themselves.

The Gamegear is known to have a few issues and complications (especially with sound). I have a unit that I need to fix.

As for your problem, I'm not sure, I've never had any problems. The only system I ever have problems with doing that is the Master System, especially when I'm playing on R-Type.

Mine seemed to have problems getting out of position, especially diagonal down/right. But you are right, Game Gears break down fast these days. I wish they'd do a remodeled clone so these cartridges can be more appreciated and collectible.

Well I've opened them all up and I've found that the Game Gear I thought was bit better does actually use a slightly different type of D-pad. I'll post pictures in a bit for archive purposes.

There are the pictures of the two different D-Pads, you can see the "improved" one uses a ball bearing in the center of the internal soft pad (no idea what the technical term for those things are :P) where the standard has it as part of the plastic on the button(s) itself. The unit that the improved pad came out of also had silver colored interior where all other Game Gears I've opened have been brown.

The only thing different about the unit from the outside is the serial number starts with a K. The model number is still 2110 and everything else looks the same.

What are the serial numbers that your other Game Gears have? Specifically, do they start with a number or a letter? I'm hoping there's an easy way to tell which systems are which just by looking at it.

Right, all the other ones I've seen so far start with numbers. That is the only one I've seen that starts with a letter so it's probably a late model (I'm assuming). The labels on the rear of the unit look the same as most of the others I've seen (I've seen minor variations on these labels, but this one had the same general labels most of them had).

I still don't think the improved D-pad is perfect but after using it for awhile it's definitely better. It was hard to determine this before because the unit I pulled it from had a horrid screen where you could hardly see anything.

Well, after mixing and matching 3 different Game Gears (1 for front casing/lens, 1 for the D-Pad, and 1 for everything else) I now have a pretty good Game Gear system. Well about as good as a Game Gear system can get any ways, they are pretty naff by modern standards. :P

Oh, and I forgot to add that I also opened a Game Gear that was indicated to be Model # 2110G (vs. the usual 2110).. I don't know what the difference is there but the interior of the system was brown and the D-pad was standard.

Does anyone here have one of those blue US Game Gears they could open up and check?

reminds me of Nintendo changing the screen types on the DS.
