Edit: See post 3 for new games for today!

I'm gonna try something different this week. New day, new game. That way we'll get some variety out there and also hopefully find something appropriate for the rapidly approaching 25th LOL

Today's game is going to be...

Noboranka, 1986 Data East.

Prologue baloney:
As usual I remembered at the very last minute that I had the chair for this week's MMMC. Instead of rushing, I just took my time and kept on with what I was doing - listening to some games in BridgeM1. I knew this game from the music in MAME, but oddly I don't remember ever having fired up the actual game. I realized immediately that I had to make it a game for this week, just because (we'll get to some seasonally-themed ones). When it's cold outside and the foliage is all off the trees, this is a nice cheery title.

Whoa! Shrooms with 'tude!

If everything goes well, I'll get some screens & a ROM up later.

Quick strategy:
Climb up the trees and don't get hit by enemies, bullets (some have homing rings), or the skulls that occasionally fall along with fruit.

At the base of the tree, enemies are worth 200 points and fruit 100 points. There's no point stacking that I can see. Therefore, if you have to choose (and you often do), shoot the enemies instead of collecting fruit. An added bonus is that dead enemies won't be able to attack and your chances of accidentally trying to catch a skull are somewhat lower if you aren't rushing around after fruit (although you should chase it as much as you can anyway).

The second button isn't actually needed, but it can make things easier. Take a look at the ILOVEYOU meter - the number of letters is the number of uses of flying you have left. I wouldn't recommend trying to use it at the beginning of the game; it's easier to fall out on a limb to get the shaded caterpillars and those nasty things with hair ribbons and homing bullets (to trick homing bullets, just move one way when they appear and then go the other way - easy). The first place you'll likely want to use it is at the first fork in the tree, where there's invincible bees flying around. You can get past them without flying, but it requires good timing.

Random interesting point: For every different way of getting bumped off the hero has a different exclamation - the small enemies at the beginning (trunk crawlers, caterpillar dudez) provoke an "A!" while the skull is a "Chi!" Most are just simple syllables (like A! I! Ge! Hi! or Chi!) with no meaning (the small wavy thing after the syllable is a small tsu, meaning the pronunciation is clipped). I'll try to get a chart together; it's amusing.

Tomorrow - stay tuned for Christmas themed stuff heading this way!

Just wanted to report that I couldn't get this one to work for me. Is it newer, or has it been revised recently? May be time to update my MAME if so...sounds interesting though.

Also, if anyone's out there, we could still use someone to run the show next week...for the final guest star week for a while. Any takers?

Noboranka is working in MAME as of 0.131u2 and has been present (but unworking) since 0.58. So it's a relatively recent addition, if May is recent. :P

Also, since it's now Christmas Day, I think some Christmas-themed games are in order! A few games for Christmas that have a measure of holiday cheer:

Carnevil
This relatively recent Midway Games addition to their arcade lightgun game lineup has a lot of "Twisted Christmas-y" stuff. The game itself is more Halloween-themed (and takes place in the fall) - those of you who are thoroughly put off by all the Gene Autry and tinsel all over the place, here's your chance to get some revenge. The first Christmas themed thing in the game is a nasty little elf who tries to stab you with a sharp candy cane. Lovely!

Boogie Wings
This somewhat obscure and rare later and artsy Data East release is a horizontal shooter with planes that have hooks on them and a main character who can run around if his ride's been shot to pieces from under him - a bit like Rohga / Wolf Fang. As memory serves, the boss of the Detroit stage (Detroit Rock City) is Ol' Saint Nick, with an emphasis on the "naughty" side.

Battletoads (stage 2)
A suggestion from Arasoi. I've not played this one enough to comment further, unfortunately.

Ok, so I downloaded 3 out of the 4 ROMs today. I won't bother with Carnevil, as I don't have a light gun capable set-up, and I don't much like playing lightgun games with a controller.

I have been out of town for most of the week, so while I had internet access, I haven't been able to play my MAME computer. I don't think I'll be able to play through all of these games, but I'll post the games I do get to.

Boogie Wings.

I appreciate the intricate level design, and all the small details that the screen is full of at all times. But that said, this game is way overstuffed. It's hard to tell what to shoot, and the correct parts of the screen to be in oftentimes. There's always a thousand things to be distracted by at any given moment, which is bad because it kills you.

My favorite boss was the evil giant Santa Claus who turned purple.

I also found that some stages were a lot shorter than others and some were easy. Of course, this was a welcome break from the stages that had dozens of moving characters on-screen at any given time. Some dangerous and some just there for show.

After the Detroit Rock City stage, there was the final stage or so I thought. I got to the end and the "bad guy" made me answer several ambiguous questions. I don't know if I chose the wrong answers or what, but I was transported back to an earlier stage with the giant dirigible. At that point I shut it off.

So, that's it for now.

Ed, that explains it. I've been running .129u2. Time to update!

Also: CarnEvil requires a chd doesn't it? Is there a source for those? Without having to DL a 20+ GB torrent or anything like that? Thanks :)

TDI has graciously stepped up, and will run the show this upcoming week. Ed, since you did just add some new games, and things have been a little pokey this week...I'll leave yours up for an extra week.

CarnEvil does require a CHD; it's 1.5 GB (and 1.51 for the clone set carnev1). Not huge but most people will get a better run out of smaller ROMs.
