What type of collectors just make you want to ring there neck till..... well.....what kind don't you like anyways.
I hate the know-it-all collector. There is this guy that the second we walk into a game store he just wants to tell me about every rare NES game in the store. "Oh, you should get this, oh this has a really low print run." The problem is none of the stuff is that rare. And then when I try to point out the rare stuff (I.E. Panic Chef, Caltron, the 3 porn games), her just acts like they are no big deal and aren't that rare. Or he knows all about upcoming games and when you state "I dunno, I'm not that excited about Fable" you just get reamed for hours about how much of a inferiour gamer you are for not liking a game that hasn't even come out yet.
Of course, he is slowly become a "Flea Market Seller" gamer, and they are a whole different annoying breed.
So which collectors just yank your chain a little to often.

i know what you mean. im 14 and when i go to gamestop(funcoland) people actually shove me out of the way when i look at nes crap. I once got the comment "shouldnt u be browsing the ps2 items" that really pissed me off, so me and my dad just left.

collectors who buy things they dont need and then ebay the stuff before trying to trade it.
rcs7127 I am a little taken back by this statement. I buy to sell on ebay , which brings me in enough profits to support all my gaming needs. I love the fact that I can enjoy the hobby and make money at the same time. What exactly is wrong with that? Are you telling me if you see a Suikoden 2 at a garage sale, fleamarket or used game store for a low price you would not consider buying it and selling it on ebay to make a profit? Then go and buy yourself something that you want? and infact you look down on those people. You need to wake up and smell the coffee son. I enjoy the classic gaming hobby and the friends I have made along the way. I always try and cut a good deal to the folks on these boards, many of them can vouch for that. Everything else goes on ebay for a profit.
As far as trades go, I have had several offers for trades , the person directs me to their trade list , I say OK I will take this and that... They say , NO I am not trading that item.. Well then why is it on your trade list? >:(
I would rather deal with sales than trades, its easier that way

Like dsullo, I use sales money to buy games for my collection. Of course I would rather trade on the board if there were people who had something I wanted, but such alignment doesn't always work out so nicely.
omnedon
06-17-2003, 10:27 AM
And I'll second kevincure.
I repair and re-sell on E-bay. At least 20 classic pre-crash systems have been rescued from the trashpiles, repaired, and put into the hands of collectors. I made a good profit on a good hunk of those.
It covers my collecting addiction, and dovetails with the hunt. And, like said above, I'm happy to give far better than Ebay deals to forum members, and do trades. And I've done so.
The know it alls drive me nuts too. There is stuff I don't know, and I'm glad to be educated. However, it can be done without being condescending.

If I took all of my yard sale finds from all summer and sold them on ebay, the profit would buy me an extra value meal. I just don't find that much, and I take my son out yard saling every single saturday morning, rain or shine. My area is so dry it makes the Sahara look like the Everglades.

I check various places not just yard sales. I check fleamarkets, used game stores (funco/gamestop/electronics boutique), pawn shops even online stores that sell merchandise cheap. There is opportunities, you just have to look for them

I admit I'm not fond of Ebay sellers either. There is this guy who goes to a local shop and buys everything he can get his hands of. This weekend he bought 50 NES games, not because he would ever want to play them, just so he can put them on Ebay. Because of him I missed Wild Gunman, Hogans Alley, Wrecking Crew, Popeye, and a slew of other NES games. And he buys every copy. He didn't buy one Hogans Alley, no, he bought all 4 of them. The exact quote was "I can make at least 2 dollars per cart off these on EBay, do you have any more in the back". This really just sickens me to no end. One time a freind that worked there called me on the phone while the guy was there. He was telling me about some of the new NES game that just got traded in, and all of a sudden the guy says to my friend "you might as well hang up the phone now, because when I'm done all the good stuff will be gone and on Ebay"
I'm not saying that you guys are like that, I though about doing the occasional Puzzle Fighter on Ebay when it still went for 90 dollars, but that kind of behaviuor just really ruins this hobby. Thats the reason alot of us can't get a good find in the wild anymore, cause someone buys everything they can get there hands on and hocks it on Ebay.

Dude, trust me on this. I check sals, goodwills, thrifts, fleas, yard sales, trash cans, gamestops, blockbusters, old ladies' handbags, happy meals, sewers, and anything else that has a remote chance of having game stuff. Anyone else in my area will vouch how hard it is to find stuff in this area. It's a combination of not much stuff and some pretty fierce competition.

I'd just like to say that I'm a greedy bastard, I buy a whole lot of stuff just to resell it later, but most of the time I earned it. I wake up early on the weekends to get to garage sales. I dig through piles of dirty trash at flea markets week after week just to find a game or two. I scan boards like this hours and hours out of my week. If I spend this much time in the hunt, I feel like it's totally okay to buy everything instead of just the stuff I don't have. When I was younger I hated people like me, but what the hey, you don't get an awesome Joe Santulli-like collection without doing stuff just like this.

Simply enough, I can't stand the collectors who are in it solely for the money. Luckily I haven't yet run into too many of these types in the classic gaming scene, as this is a niche that still seems to require some passion for the games themselved. But I have seen this all-about-the-money archetype in other collector circles; toys, for instance.
There seems to be a line one can cross where collecting stops being a hobby and becomes a job. Hobbies are generally fun, but jobs are not necessarily so. I for one will take great care to never cross that line, because I want my classic gaming to remain fun.

I sympathize with your story here. I am not the type to buy everything I can get my hands on to make a 2.00 profit. That is a waste of time. I will visit stores regularly for unique or hard to find items. Some to keep and some to sell. For instance I just sold an NCAA Baskbetball for the GC on ebay. I actually offered it up on the Sale Boards here first (no takers). One day on ebay and it is sold. I sold it for a very reasonable buy it now. About the cost of the game when it first hit the shelves new. The buyer may live in a remote area of the country that has no used game stores to find this title. Am I ruining the industry by suppling him a copy of a game he may otherwise not find. I think I am helping him out, and it return helping myself. Its all how you look at it. I have bought many games from dealers, shows and other ebay sellers in which they made a profit and I got the item I wanted.. Everyone wins. At the last PhillyClassic I bought a Atari 2600 Condor Attack for over 100.00. I was happy to add this rare gem to my collection. I don;t think we are ruining the industry at all.

If I don't have it and I can afford it, I buy it. I don't sell games that I don't have dupes of.
If I already have it, I generally won't buy it unless I can get at least $25 profit on Ebay. If I can, I buy it (like that Suikoden II that I bought at a GameStop for $40 and resold on Ebay for $120.)
I use the money to buy more things for myself.
If you don't like it, pooh on you! :D
It's a dog-eat-dog world out there and no one is going to pass up a profitable game just so some total stranger can pick it up later and love on it... haven't you heard? Get real, people!

i respect your opinion and appreciate your response, i just do not see this matter in the same the way you do.
ebay strip miners have picked the country bare of collectibles and given the goods over to the highest bidder. theres no stopping it now but that doesnt mean i have to like it.

Don't worry, they treat older people the same way. If they think your a nooB in the realm of retrogaming they'll disrespect you regardless of your age.
It's not just the collector it's also the guy behind the counter. I went to Game Stop not too long ago to buy a used GameBoy Advanced and when I asked a couple of questions he started talking down to me. He seemed to think I was buying the game for my kid (I don't have any kids - except my inner child - the GB was for me!) and he made comments to that effect. He must of figured that since I was over 30, I didn't know anything about gaming - retro or otherwise. I didn't let it bother me especially since it's not the first time this kind of thing happened to me.

I hear you guys' pain, I used to be treated like that at my local Funco (still am, but not often at all). But I think I know the secret, at least what worked for me: if people are treating you that way, and someone else in the store asks a question to them, beat them to the punch if you know the answer. I've heard people ask things ranging from "How much is this?" (when they still had the catalogues) to "Is this a good game?" (Ironically, they held up Superman 64, so I HAD to interject), to "What would my kid like?" It's quite fun to beat a cocky and arrogant store worker or "specialist" in the store (expecially when you're VERY young... I was doing that when I was like 14 and they offered me a job right then and there, but I couldn't take it because I had to be at least 16. Joy! :D ).
I still don't work there though...

WBerdan used to piss me off-lol. Everytime I went to bid on something for Colecovision on eBay, there he was, beating me to the punch. I kept thinking, how many Q*bert's Qubes does one man need?
He responded to a post I put on the buying/selling forum here for a collectible album I had, made a good deal for a lot of the rarer CV titles I wanted & changed my attitude! I guess I'm just pissed off at people who've got more money to spend on the stuff than I do.
But seriously, I really hate the way people throw around the "rare" or "mint" labels to the products they peddling. What a joke!

That reminds me. The "Know-it-all" collector I know is also a "Destructive" collector.
He has a sealed copy of FF 1 at his house. When he is out, he buys every copy of FF 1, no matter the cost, and destroys them. He destroys the boxes, manuals, maps, and games, if he can get his hands on them. Thus making his copy worth more when he sells it on >) EBAY >) .
He actually tried to steal MY complete copy when one of my friends came brought him over. I do truly think Ebay is the bain of this hobby.

Wait--he buys FF1s for money and destroys them, so that he can sell his sealed copy for more money? What an idiot. While he might have been able to raise the going price of FF1 in his neighborhood by doing this before the days of the internet, I doubt he could ever destroy enough FF1s to elevate the price on ebay (an international market) even slightly. And in either case, he'd never raise the price enough to make back the money he spent on buying the FF1s he destroyed.
How old is this guy? Tell him bargora says he's a retarded shithead.
ClubNinja
06-18-2003, 11:03 AM
Couldn't this moron "accomplish" the same thing by just hiding every copy of FF1 he finds in his basement? To the outside world, the game would be just as "rare" as it would be though his current technique. The same spike in value that he's projecting would occur... but in this case, he'd actually have a *large stock* of the elevated-in-rarity-and-value FF1 game to profit from.
After you call him a retarded shithead for bargora, please back over him with a truck.

The collectors I can't stand (purely because I'm an envious prick), are the ones that have more prototypes than I have regular fucking games in my collection....hundreds and hundreds of protos.

And there were shitheads doing this last year WHILE CGE WAS STILL GOING ON! Yup, some of those homebrews were on eBay that very night while the Expo was still going on.
I've already decided, when I make my homebrew, I will deliberately undersell every idiot who pops one up on eBay. If you see an "EXTRA RARE CGE RELEASE! $50!" pop up, just wait a moment. I will post an identical auction for half that cost as BIN, and in quantities no less than 25. And I shall do that every time I see my item pop up as some rarity, just to take the sale away from the moron.

Ill make this brief.....1. A collector who does not trade fairly......2. A collector who will not give a fair price for things(a.k.a. ripps people off) 3. A collector who thinks what they collect is the best and everything else is not worth collecting(close minded) 4. A collector who thinks that the more you spend on a game, the better it is. 5. A collector who thinks that the more you own, the better the person you are. I am a collector but I HATE the above things and I just darn right refuse to do the above things as a collector. The bottom line is to 1. trade fairly with fellow gamers. 2.Give a fair price when someone is not knowedgeable of sorts(it is called ethics) 3. Be open minded to what else is out there 4. Respect that value games are fun to collect. 5. More games in your library does not mean more knowledge.
