Hi guys. I'm finally getting a current gaming system. I have stayed away from console gaming for a good 3 years. I have been content with playing the hell out of my genesis, snes and mame systems. That all changed when i saw a video on you tube of new super mario brothers for wii. I new i had to have it as soon as I saw all that cool retro mario goodness !
I am going to pick one up in two weeks or so and other than mario I need to figure out a few good games to grab.
So far I'm thinking about these :
House of the Dead: Overkill
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Dead Space: Extraction
They all look fun but what games would you guys recommend?

Never played Deadspace extraction before, but if its anything like the Deadspace that came out for PC, 360, and PS3(?) It should be way rad. Anyone who was really disapointed in RE5 should check it out.

My top 5 would be:
Trauma Center (any)
Super Mario Galaxy
Punch-out
Manhunt 2
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam
Favorite would be the Tony Hawk. If Tony Hawk and Burnout had a baby, this game would be the offspring :)

You know, I called you posting something like this almost word for word. Yay for me!
My Wii gets very little playing time due to a severe lack of games I genuinely care about, but there are a few phenomenal games. Besides New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the games I enjoy most are:
No More Heroes
de Blob
MadWorld
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart Wii
Punch Out
and of course, Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Dammit! Forgot Zack and Wiki!
And yeah...2010 looks like it'll be a good year for the Wii because of Epic Mickey and SMG2 alone.

Honestly, you must lead a very empty life if you find it necessary to crap on every thread that involves the Wii. What, did they ban you from commenting on Kotaku, and now you have no other outlet for your pointless Wii bitchery? I'm not a fan of the Playstation, but you don't see me diving into every thread involving the PS3 and making snotty comments. If you've got nothing constructive or remotely interesting to add to the conversation, please kindly keep your fucking noise hole shut.
Maybe if you spent less time trolling Wii threads, you might not suck so much at Street Fighter 4.
As for good Wii games, in addition to Press_start's list (though if you're going to get Metroid Prime Trilogy, there's no reason to pick up Prime 3 separately), I suggest A Boy and His Blob Wii. It's a VERY unique puzzle-platformer, with beautiful 2-D graphics, which of course means it was criminally overlooked. I'll also toss in Excitebots (now at a budget price at most retailers) and Link's Crossbow Training (a fun little target shooting game that can be picked up used for like four bucks).

If you're into RPGs, here's two games you should check out:
Opoona
It's a unique "Lifestyle RPG" by Koei. You play as an alien named Opoona who was separated from his family after they crash landed on the planet Landroll. Your main goal is to become a productive citizen of Landroll so you can earn enough money to pay for the medical treatment of Opoona's parents. You do this by acquiring several different jobs along the way, which can be anything from "Ranger" to "Fast Food Employee". There's also a secondary goal of making as many friends as possible. These friends are apparently supposed to help you later in the game. Another unique aspect is that you can play the entire game (battles, exploring, etc.) one handed with just the nunchuck.
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
It's definitely worth checking out if you've played the original game on the GameCube. If you haven't played the original game yet, I suggest you do it first before trying this one. Otherwise a lot of the plot points won't make much sense. This installment includes the ability to capture & raise the same monsters you battle against in the game. It's not some mini-game though, it's a crucial part of the gameplay. Did I mention that it's extremely addicting as well? Believe me, there's nothing more satisfying than watching your carefully raised monster pulverize the enemy!

Anyway,
Here's a thread that gives you the highest reviewed games (1st post is current until a couple months ago)

Good place to start.
I'll throw my hat in on a few titles...most have been said before.
No More Heroes
Boom Blox
de Blob
Elebits
Toy Story Mania
Wii Sports / Wii Sports Resort
Zack & Wiki
Speed Racer (surprisingly fun, much better than the movie)
Super Mario Galaxy
Excitetruck (also heard the sequel Exitebots is fun, but have not played yet)
I've heard great things about the new Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Tiger Woods 10 w/ Wii Motion Control.
Also: don't forget you've got the whole Gamecube library to play with as well. Ton of fun games there as well.

These are the titles I recommend for Wii:
Wii Sports Resort (and 1 extra Motion Plus)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Super Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart Wii
Punch-Out Wii
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mario Kart Wii
Super Mario Galaxy - with this one, I personally thought to myself, that it would be entertaining, yet a game that I truly would not feel the love for (like Super Mario 64...fun, yet not earthshattering). However, I saw my brother play the game one day, and got sucked in, and played it non stop until I finished it

I highly recommend Klonoa, Super Swing Golf Season 2, both Trauma Centers, Mad World, and Umbrella Chronicles.
OH and Fire Emblem.
The wii has alot of great games swimming in a sea of mediocre poop.

From what I've seen, LostWinds is missing on the recommendation lists (download title). There's really a whole bunch of enjoyable games for Wii that justify getting the console.
I haven't owned a Wii in some time......but I REALLY enjoyed Tiger Woods Golf (wouldnt matter which year) and also Rapela Fishing. Fishing game are a natural for the Wii. There was also a marble game that had you guiding a marble around a course by tilting the Wiimote. Loved it. The Zelda game is FAR better if you play the Cube version...on the Wii.

Ah yes, the Kororinpa games. The first one seems nigh on impossible to find. The second one is still around. I haven't played them, but they do look quite good.
And Kitsune - I doubt it, most golf fans I know don't really care that much. The story is for all the gossipmongers out there. Once another celebrity does something stupid, Tiger will be an after thought again.

I don't take my Wii out often, but when I do it's always Tatsunoko vs Capcom. That game is excellent. The new North American version is going to be even better, so I'd highly recommend it. It's definitely the best Capcom Vs series game so far.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
I had really high hopes for that game. I just couldn't get past Emil's whining enough to enjoy it.
On a completely different note, Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles looks super duper. If it wasn't for my fear of Christmas shoppers I would have picked it up this past weekend. Gonna try again once the madness dies.

Honestly Mad World imo is a vastly overlooked game, maybe cause of the violence, maybe cause it's in black and white. All I can say is if you can get over those two facts there is one helluva fun game with some real great mechanics.

Mario Galaxy, Punch Out, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Fire Emblem, all really good. A Boy and his Blob is a pretty sweet 3rd party title, and Speed Racer is pretty rad for the cheap price its at now. If you play with other people frequently, I can recommend stuff like Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Party 8, Mario Strikers Charged...and of course, Wii Sports Resort.
Tatsunoko vs Capcom is an amazingly fun fighter, and I can pretty much guarantee the US release in January will prove to be just as entertaining as the Japanese version, even if you don't know any of the characters.
As far as downloadable games, Mega Man 9, the Bit Trip series, Orbient, and World of Goo are some of my favorites. Just make sure you get an SD card...those can take up a good chunk of space from the Wii's onboard memory!

I hooked up my Wii again for the first time since June 10, 2008. I brought it to work for some Wii Sports and Puzzle Bobble love.
I might pick up new SMB and go through that - I played it briefly before and it seemed decent. Also the Metroid Prime Trilogy redone for Wii is supposed to be wicked.
Also, Kupo ha.

If you like adventure games, I strongly recommend Broken Sword Director's Cut. It's an old game, but it's quite excellent, and they added some content, making this the definitive version.
Another as-yet-unmentioned game I endorse is Deadly Creatures. It's an action game where you play as a scorpion and a tarantula. It's a very cleverly designed game, I don't know why it wasn't more popular. Cheap copies are in abundance.

Also I really like Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. You've probably played the game before, but it actually controls really well w/ the wii-mote. And if you haven't played the game before, then you should have, so get it. I think its only $30.

I'm enjoing pangya go...i mean, super swing golf 1 and 2. We love golf is also good. Lots of the games mentioned are also great. I've not been playing my wii much as of late as I've been more on a DS kick. The Wii Rune Factory looks great if your into Harvest Moon though.

No More Heroes is easily one of the best games I've played this decade, so I highly recommend it.
I'd probably buy another Wii just to own Mario Kart Wii. I played it at a friends house after I'd gotten rid of my Wii. The ultimate MK when used with a Cube controller (didn't care for the wheel method). Yep, I could live happy with just that one game in my Wii library. Honestly.

I still play ExciteTruck and it was the first game I bought. New Super Mario Bros. is a nice throwback to the old 2D platform games. Some of the shooting games like Ghost Squad and House of the Dead are pretty fun.

It might not be for everyone, but the new Silent Hill Shattered Memories for Wii is pretty awesome.
It's nothing like the other games, but the psychological aspect is back in full force.
If you can, give it a spin. You might just like it. I know I sure did! And it's making me play the Wii again! :)

Bomberman Land is another good game if you into 4 players deathmatch and Muramasa: The Demon Blade is good pickup.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, and Wii Sports Resort. That should hold you for a couple of months.

I know you said "Other than Mario..."
But I have only one Wii game that I find to be worth a recommendation.
Super Mario Galaxy.
I didn't like Mario 64 at all, so I didn't expect to like Galaxy. I was extremely happy with it though! No up, no down, just total 3D creativity. It's a bit of a challenge to keep your brain wrapped around the worlds. It's very cool. Do yourself a favor and get this...it's very fun. Just don't expect it to be like SMB3 or SMW. It's more parallel with Mario 64. (If you aren't a M64 fan, keep in mind that I still hate that game, and I still LOVE Galaxy.)

To this day, the best example of what the Wii can do, in my opinion, is Zelda. The game has a great aesthetic, perfect story flow and balance, and tight controls. There aren't very many games that I enjoy every single minute of, but Twilight Princess earns that distinction.
Metroid Prime Trilogy is excellent, even though the first two are just control updates. I'm still working through these, but it's definitely worth a recommendation.
Wario Ware is excellent, but probably best in short sessions. I really hate the minigame genre, but this one is worth checking out. It's bizarre and fun, essentially Nintendo's Katamari.
Beyond that, I'd actually like some recommendations myself. The other Wii games that I've really enjoyed were more traditional, often not even using any kind of motion control or pointing. Brawl is great, but it makes almost no use of the Wii's features. A Boy and His Blob is worth checking out, but it has the same issue. I loved Baroque, but yet again, very little use of the Wii's capabilities. Mega Man 9 is bloody amazing, but... you get the picture.
I like SMG, but to be honest, I enjoyed 64 and Sunshine better. SMG is certainly very good, but I wouldn't call it amazing.
My recommended shopping list would be:
-Zelda
-Metroid
-Mega Man 9

See I like the Wii titles that are forced to focus on gameplay because they don't have the graphic power to fall back on. A lot of the first party titles are like this. I *hate* when they fall back on the "wiggle your wiimote" thing - that was the one thing about the new Zelda that pissed me off. The nunchuk to move wiimote to aim is a great gameplay control method, and I love games that use it well. I'd like to go back to the new Zelda sometime... maybe now that I'm using the Wii again I will.
Resident Evil 4 for Wii seemed promising.

Exercise? What the fuck is that??
I just don't get Zelda on the Wii. Actually, I haven't enjoyed Zelda since it went 3D.
I'm running, I'm looking, I'm getting bored, I've lost interest, I'm pausing, I'm surfing the internet...
I'm obviously in the minority here, because nobody else says bad things about it. I will say, though, if you enjoy 3D Zelda, then Twilight Princess should be right up your alley. It was one of my fist games for the Wii and it does appear, to me, to be an appropriately evolved incarnation of the 3D Zelda's.

I've talked to several people that really enjoyed it. I haven't tried it, but it looks like shovelware. Weird.
I don't think that 3D Zelda is the same thing as classic Zelda, so it helps to go into it with a clear mindset. Just look at it as an action-adventure game.

House of the Dead 2 & 3 + 2x Nyko Perfect Shots = arcade experience in your living room.
Really accurate, really good light gun action...if that's your thing. Can be picked up on the cheap on eBay as a package, vs. paying $20 for the game + $15 each for the Nyko shells (which, despite being only injected mold plastic, are crucial to the game being fun).
Little King's Story looks really interesting; I was thinking about buying it when it came down in price, but I rarely play my Wii, so I'll wait until it's $5 or something or just pass. Got pretty solid reviews (80%+ I think).
I may get some crap for this suggestion, but Wii Play + Remote might be a worthwhile purchase...it has somewhat decent multiplayer, and a couple of the games are fun. Air Hockey is good times. It's only $10 ($50, technically, but the Wii-Mote retails for $40, so yeah...), so don't expect amazing things. I've bought way worse games for $10 on the Xbox Live Marketplace, so I was satisfied with that purchase.

I'm a big fan of any of the physic games like Boom Blox. They make great party games. Some of the games I loved some people just don't like. Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 come to mind. I loved them both but many casual gamers I know are iffy on them. Wario Shake it! was fun.
I thought Zelda: Twilight Princess was more fun with the GC version.
... someone liked Endless Ocean?! I've got a chipped Wii (great for homebrew and those 4 GC games on a DVD-R compilations) and a burned copy of that game. I swear I gave it 30 minutes before filing it in the trash.
