View Full Version : PS3 Torx driver, in Maitland, FL?

I'm visiting relatives in Maitland, FL. I'm about 3 miles from the Altamonte Mall on SR-436.

My cousin has a PS3 that only plays movies (guessing she meant Blu-Ray, haven't tested the unit myself yet).

I wanted to try and clean the laser lens and/or adjust the laser (like I've done in the past on my PS2) to see if I may be able to fix the unit.

I can't OPEN the PS3, due to Sony's use of security torx bits.

The system is out of warranty.

I'm leaving town tomorrow.

Do any of you know where I may be able to get a Torx T10 security driver in this area? I already wasted time trying CompUSA. (Yes, a brick and mortar, still in business, and omg what a dreadful place - was worse than I remember them!)

Ideally I could pick the driver up tonight after dinner, but I'm guessing everything will be closed at 6pm.

If anyone knows where I can get the driver, I'd be thrilled to hear about it asap, in case I can get the driver before I leave town tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks,
Steve

PS: If you PM me, I'll see the response on my phone and might be able to pick up the tool on my way home from dinner tonight. Thanks again.

Just use a small flathead, and wedge it between the little security nub and the edge of the torx hole. It works like a charm.

Radio Shack/the Source/whatever usually has a torx set on for $19.99 or 9.99

It has to be a security torx, the one with the hole in the middle of the bit.

Just to close this discussion up for anybody interested -

I didn't find a security Torx bit while I was in town. I couldn't unscrew the bit using a flathead wedged between the security nub and the notch in the screwhead.

On a whim, I hooked up the console anyway and tried it out.

Lego Star Wars - PS2 --- worked fine
Virtua Tennis - PS3 --- worked fine
Network -- online update, then Gravity Crash demo ( :) ) --- worked fine

So, I don't know what was wrong or why they thought there was anything wrong with the system, but I was happy to play and return it to them.

And now that I'm back in the land of MicroCenter I know I'll be getting a security torx soon if I don't already have one in one of my universal bit sets.

Noah, I wish I had known you were in town. I live in Altamonte, 5 minutes from Maitland!

You should have hit up Harbor Freight on Semoran (436) & Howell Branch. They have every kind of Torx bit you would need plus some. FYI next time you're in town or your relatives ask.

Also, I have a friend who had the same issue. The GPU is starting to fail. It will only start happening after playing for a little while or with certain games, and then it will degrade from there until eventually all games are unplayable. It doesn't seem to affect Blu-Ray movies though.
