Hi, I'm new.

And I found a new game for my C64 cartridge collection at a thrift. The game is called "Light-waves," and it's made by CBS Software. I was pretty excited about the game because the description on the box is quite elaborate and techno-nerdy and made in cooperation with the Children's Television Workshop, and I've always liked their other games.

The digital press online rarity guide has no listing for this game. Googling for the game provides virtually no information. It's as if Light-waves is the game time forgot.

When I got the game home, I carefully removed the thrift store tape that had sealed the box shut. To my great dismay, the Light-waves game cartridge I thought I had purchased was not inside the box. There was a game cartridge for "Time bound" inside the box instead. Both the instruction manuals for Time bound and for Light-waves were inside the box as well. So, my $1.99 wasn't completely wasted, because "Time bound" was a game I did not have before, and it's always a thrill to add another title to the collection.

Here, now, is my question:

Since the Light-waves cartridge was not inside the box, I have to wonder whether or not it ever really existed in cartridge format. The evidence I have for it's existence is the instruction manual I have in my possession, which includes specific instructions for the Disk Version and separate specific instructions for the Cartridge Version. The evidence I have for its non-existence in cartridge format is the absence of the game from digital press's well researched cartridge rarity list, as well as the dearth of information on the game available on the Net.

Do any of you C64 cartridge collectors know what the story is? I'm dying to know.

I found it by scratching the hyphen from the name:

I'm not sure what to make of it from the screenshot, but it could be interesting.

As the guy who is responsible for the C64 section here at DP, I should answer...! :p

This is interesting news. I was aware of Light-Waves (as I'm also a member of the Gamebase64 team) but I had not seen any evidence of it being released, or possibly being released on cartridge. Can you provide a picture of the front of the box that says "cartridge" and a shot of the page in the manual giving details for a cartridge version? This would be good enough to give it "rumour mill" status if nothing else currently and I'll add it to the database.

If things check out, then hold onto the box and manual. If I ever get my hands on said cartridge, I'd know where to come to complete it ;)

I made scans, and put them up on photobucket here:

sadly, the box is more fun than the game itself.

Cheers for that, pity the sticker on the front that indicates whether it's meant to be disk or cartridge is missing though. Still, the manual does say cartridge, so into RM it goes...

Does the manual mention anything about who programmed it?

The instructions manual does not credit the programmer(s) specifically. Rather, the CTW Software Development Team is credited in alphabetical order:

Harold Byrd
Cathy Chang
Jim Clark
Daniel E. Cohn
Bernie Dekoven
Lisa Feder
Michael Feldman
Seth Meyers
Dan Oehlsen
Alan Shapiro
Diane Siversten
Mark Sutton-Smith

Upon googling each member on the list above, I discovered a Web page authored by Bernie Dekoven. On his Web page, Mr. Dekoven admits to being the developer of Light-Waves and also explains his inspiration for the game.

Here's the link to Bernie Dekoven's Web page:
