View Full Version : Favourite version of Tetris?

There have been tons of incarnations of this addictive little puzzler we all know and love.
My favourite version would be Tetris DX on the GBC. It's got the smoothest, most accurate controls of any Tetris I've ever played. My only complaint is the failure to include the classic Tetris music (i.e: the Tetris Song).
So what's your favourite?

Probably tengen's tetris for me.

tengen tetris: hard to deny. 2-player NES action with the russian flair.

Original Tetris for original Game Boy is hands down the best. It was the perfect pack-in game for that system, and I believe it was the appeal this game alone that helped Nintendo sell 1.8 bazillion of these things despite the competition of superior handhelds (GG and Lynx) at the time of its release.
Whenever I hit the used game shops, I find it very telling that while I can now buy a monochrome Game Boy for under $10, a Tetris GB cart from 1989 will still fetch between $15 and $20 by itself. Moreover, even though it was a pack-in game for a popular system it's not like the shops have a stack of fifty of them (cf. - Atari 2600 Combat) that they're desperate to dump. In other words, while people seem ready ditch their Game Boy in favor of an upgrade, they still hold onto that Tetris cart.

Game Boy Tetris was pretty good (love that solid Russian music!), but the 2-player mode didn't work all that well. After a while, it seemed to come down to who could get the most 4-bars the fastest.
Speaking of which, I once read that apparently when you rotate a piece a lot, the game's AI will send more of that piece your way, obstensibly because you're having trouble with the piece. I haven't tested that myself, though.
Anyone ever try Tetripz? Very trippy.

I like the NES Tetris, but I do miss the lack of 2 player, so for that we go to Tengen.
Edtris2600 is pretty good too, considering the limitations. :)

I always liked the Atari coin-op the best. Still do. :)

Everytime I go to a used game shop I check out the used GB carts and I look for a Tetris cart. Most of the time they don't have it and when I ask they say that lots of people ask for a Tetris cart and they sell the used Tetris almost as soon as they get them. It seems to me that if you have a GameBoy you GOT to have a Tetris cart. So just by popularity alone the GB version is the best. Tetris is certainly the most playable game for the GB.
Personally I prefer the GB version over the arcade version.

I've got to go with the GB version as well. Once upon a time, my wife-to-be wanted a GBC of her own, so smitten was she with mine, so with visions of link-cable deathmatches (in a hot tub on our honeymoon) (yeah, I know there are other things we could've been doing there) dancing in my head, I got her one, and promptly procured two Tetris carts on eBay.
I was surprised how much I had to pay for those. Neither of them came in for less than $10.
And it's still maniacally fun.

It's a tossup for the nes pair nes for the music tengen for the gameplay. Although the new one at the arcade by capcom was phenomonal. I set the high scores and never saw them broken in my area and then they removed it. I just cried.

I bet I'm in the minority when I state my displeasure with Tengen Tetris. Not the kind of game I like playing 2 player to begin with, and it really pales in aesthetics and music compared to the Nintendo version.
For the record however, I must espouse my love for a port of Tetris for the TI-83 calculator. Inconspicuously camoflaged for the scholastic environment.

LOL, I use to play Tetris on my TI-85 as well. My fave is Tengen Tetris.

I'm probably alone here, but my fave is easily The New Tetris for the N64.
The gameplay is true to the original with only 3 minor changes:
-Whatever piece is falling, a "shadow" is displayed at the bottom of the playfield so you can never misjudge and drop a piece in the wrong spot
-Pressing up on the controller will instantly place a piece on the playfield instead of pressing down and waiting for it to fall
-If you can manage to create a 4x4 solid block with fresh, unbroken pieces, the block solidifies into one block, and you get extra points for clearing it.
The minor gameplay changes along with the breathtaking music make this one my fave, although Tetris DX comes in second.

Mr Mort took the words right out of my mouth. New Tetris on N64 is by far the best version out there. I actually had the post all written up when work finished, and closed the window without posting hehe.
I'd like to add that 4 player tetris with the abililty to direct your garbage to any of the other 3 players is rad. Now it's possible to 'gang up' on someone :devilish:

I've got a copy of Tetris for the Sega Genesis (well, Megadrive). It's a complete and very close conversion of Sega's own System 16 Arcade board and was scrapped when Sega relealised that they'd never get the publishing rights.
BUT, There are Hong Kong pirate version out there, though not that many.

Say, anyone remember that "Tetris Exhibition" video, featuring somebody whipping through a Japanese arcade Tetris game? It's quite impressive.
I've been told that those arcade machines feature a very nice engine, and the joystick actually "clicks" for every space you move a block, allowing you to move a block into position before it barely appears at the top of the screen.

Yes, it is quite fly. I don't recall who posted it originally, but this guy makes me look like my dad when it comes to playing tetris.

Kevtris for the ColecoVision. In spite of the bug that spoils the 2-player games, the one-player games- all 3- are excellent. The graphics are nicely done, and the music- especially soundtrack 2- are superb.
Wetrix was also interesting.

Having played the original CGA PC, both the NES versions, the Game Boy version (way back in the day), another PC version, the TI-83+ version, and "Tetrinet", which, five years ago, was the shit (Tetris with a bunch of extra options, plus internet multiplayer), I'd rank them like this:
6) Original PC version, or any version where hitting "down" drops your piece all the way to the bottom. Hands down the most annoying, obnoxious "feature", and makes me wonder how these people manage to call themselves Game Programmers.
5) NES, 2nd Version (Nintendo) - I don't like the music, I don't like the bright purdyfied graphics, the physics suck, and the lack of a 2P mode dooms this one to the commons crapper.
4) Game Boy - yeah, I know, I know. sacrelidge - but come on... even these days, it's $60 plus however much a link cable is to play this one 2P, and that's just not worth it. Heck, going rate for Game Boy Tetris is $14.99 - I'm assuming you can find it for $10 online. $30 for the games, $50 for two Game Boys... no thanks.
3) TI 83+ - No 2P version, but we needed a TI-83+ for math, and the game was free if you could find a friend to hook you up. This game kept me busy in high school.
2) Tengen Tetris. B0zz music, 2P competetive (where you just, um, make Tetrises for as long as possible, there's no "battle" function like in GB), 2P coorporative (where you get one extra wide pit), and 1P "versus" computer, and DANCERS!!! Best of all, this game features the BEST physics of any Tetris version, complete with acceleration! Takes some getting used to, but definitely worth it in the long run. The perfect way to laze away a lazy summer evening with a friend.
1) Tetrinet - multiplayer (up to 4P if I remember correctly) and loaded with yummy options (six bonus blocks, though the only ones I remember are the one which would clear a line from your screen, the one which would add garbage to your opponent's screen, and the "earthquake" one, which would knock everything on your screen back into place (useful for when you had lots of gaps and ickyness)). Awesome if it's still up and running.

I played only three versions of Tetris - the two NES versions (Nintendo and Tengen) and for the SNES.
I'll go for the SNES version. Nice music selection, some variations in gamemodes, and, yes, the GRAPHICS, oh GOD, the GRAPHICS are so much improved. :)

Best home version? Easily The New Tetris. The block physics, three piece look ahead, shadow, scoring system, one piece hold, and multiplayer were all totally ace and it's a damn shame the game is so often overlooked.
I didn't much care for the music, though...especially compared to Tetrisphere's music. TNT's soundtrack is just annoying in comparison. It also takes a while to get used to the level progression system since it's totally different from the rest of the Tetris games.
Best overall is a tossup, though. I love me some Tetris Grand Master. There's really not anything bad I can say about the Grand Master series other than it sucked far too much money from me in the arcades. Everything was shit hot... graphics, control, block physics, difficulty, etc. It's in MAME and Zinc so that you can get a taste test of it in case your arcade doesn't have it, and I can't recommend it enough.
I hope Arika decides to port Tetris Grand Master 3 (http://www.arika.co.jp/product/tgm3/index.html) to the Playstation 2. It's a damn shame they never ported the first two games, and given how the other Type X games are making it to home consoles, it only makes sense for them to bring out TGM3 as well :(
There's videos of all three Tetris Grand Master games here (http://www.arika.co.jp/movie.htm)
Never really understood the love for Tetris DX. The game was buggy and broken :( Wall climbing was lame and the scoring system was too different from GB Tetris'. Also don't really understand the love for Tengen Tetris...the game feels really rough around the edges, almost like a piece of beta software. Sure, it was fun when I was younger, but there are so many drastically superior versions of Tetris out now... (ie. alost all of them)

Nintendo's version will always be my favorite. How many of these threads have we had? And every time I have to defend my favorite against the substantially overrated Tengen version. I don't give a crap about multi-player, so I am perfectly happy with the better looking Nintendo one.
The music. The colors changing with each level. Always been my favorite. Always will be. :D

Gameboy Tetris was my favorite by far. It was the first one I played and I played it all the time. Awesome game.

Nintendo's NES Tetris, hands down. It's what I grew up playing (as a family we'd take turns playing it, much like I remember doing with Q*Bert for Colecovision), so anything else seems just not quite the same.

I think the "Tetris & Dr. Mario" SNES version is the best. I've played the NES Nintendo Tetris and the original Game Boy Tetris but never the NES Tengen version. Is there any newer version of Tetris than you can play 4-player? I bought Tetris Worlds but that game was terrible.
