We tried playing Gradius III+IV on a HDTV via the PS2's component cable (not RCA). The game does boot but Gradius III won't play on the TV. There's sound but no image (my LG TV indicates "Wrong Format" or something like that on the screen). Yet, Gradius IV plays just fine.

Has anyone else encountered this issue with Gradius III?

Your TV can't process 240p. I guess that Gradius IV is running at 480i or something while Gradius 3 runs at 240p.

Do you or a friend have Fatal Fury Archives vol 1? You should experience the same problem with that game.

I've got the same problem when I try to play Shadow Of The Colossus and PS1 games on my old Vizio hdtv with component cables. Only thing that fixed it was getting a PS3 and using HDMI.

So you're using the PS3's ability to output a different signal? Otherwise this looks to me like a different issue; SotC doesn't run in 240p (unless I'm terribly mistaken). A bit surprised to hear from izarate that Graddy III does, but it makes sense knowing the source game.

It's definitely not the same issue with Shadow of the Colossus, because we had no problem running the game.

Oh, and thanks for the info! Had no idea that my TV couldn't process 240p. It's good to know.

I'm actually using a PS2 to play SotC (got a PS3 slim, so no BC). I'm pretty sure it was Colossus that was giving me problems in component but I could be wrong.

Same issue, different resolution.

Ico and SotC (I believe, never personally checked the second one) don't output a 480i signal (I'm not sure off hand what the resolution is besides knowing it's lower than 480i), which is why many people encounter issues when trying to play them via component when their television set wasn't designed to accept such a low resolution signal from it's component input.

Edit - A quick search suggest that Ico is 240p (Couldn't remember, but I have checked it with my television), had trouble finding any answers for the resolution SotC runs at.
