View Full Version : Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
This is coming out for the PS3 and 360 on February 10, and for the Wii in March. It is a "Kart" type racing game, and seems to look like Sega's answer to Mario Kart. Not sure which version I will get. If the Wii version using the wheel that came with Mario Kart Wii, I'll get that one. Here's the confirmed character list:
From the Sonic the Hedgehog series
* Sonic the Hedgehog
* Miles "Tails" Prower
* Knuckles the Echidna
* Doctor Eggman
* Amy Rose
* Shadow the Hedgehog
* Big the Cat
From other Sega properties
* AiAi from Super Monkey Ball
* Amigo from Samba de Amigo
* Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue
* Beat from Jet Set Radio
* Alex Kidd from the Alex Kidd series
* Billy Hatcher from Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
* Zobio and Zobiko, the zombie couple from The House of the Dead EX
From non-Sega properties
* Banjo and Kazooie from Banjo-Kazooie(Xbox 360)
* Xbox 360 Avatars(Xbox 360)
* Miis (Wii)

Yes. There are plenty of other Sega characters that are a hell of a lot better than Big the Cat.

Eh. My opinion is that it should either be Sonic R 2, and have a bunch of Sonic characters, or it should be Sega All-Stars, and feature a wide variety of Sega characters.
Although really, either way I'm sure the gameplay will be tepid.

So it's an updated version of the Sonic Drift games? It would have been nice if Sketch Turner from Comix Zone was included, he'd probably be the most normal character in the game.
Edit:
a zombie from House of the Dead...
There are a couple of zombies included in the game.

Which will make the gameplay entirely different, I'm sure. The characters after Sonic are minutia. It's a kart-style racing game made by Sega where half of the characters are from Sonic games. It's not going to be different.

The only reason they are adding the non-Sonic characters is so they can reach a broader audience. This is probably going to be a sad flaunting of some of the characters they toyed with before the end of the golden era in Segas existance.

I agree too many are from Sonic games, but adding Alex Kidd, Ryo Hazuki, and the character from Super Monkey Ball are nice editions. However, many are left out, like Opa-Opa, Space Harrier, Zillion and Phantasy Star characters, or even Wonder Boy. Even still, it's a step in the right direction.

Too bad the average gamer has no idea what the Master System was, hence they will not care about Sega's 80's characters.

I probably won't touch it, but it still piques my interest by inclusion of Ryo Hazuki- no doubt he'll be on his motorcycle. Could Lan Di driving the infamous black car be an unlockable?
Also, I second the notion that Sumo makes the awesomely fun OutRun2 and should be given a chance with this.

Considering that the Master System gave Nintendo a run for their money in Europe in the 1980s, I doubt that statement can be considered universally correct. Also considering the proliferation of emulation and retro games, worldwide knowledge of the Sega Master System is considerably higher now.

Yeah. It's worth pointing out that Sumo Digital (who's making this game) is located in the UK. Plus, these games tend to do better in Europe (see: Sega Superstars Tennis). Since Sega had the greatest popularity in Europe "back in the day", any new "Sega nostalgia" game is going to be produced with an eye on the European market, as it offers their best chance of success for the new game. This game is most likely being developed in Europe with the European market in mind, and the US release is secondary (and it may not even get released in Japan).

Yeah.
I posted earlier that the game was being done by Sumo.
I agree that with Sumo doing it, it should be an awesome racer.
Seriously kids, you have not even played the game and are already hating on it. Hahahaha. I heard Metal Gear Solid 5 was going to suck. I have not played it or even seen a screenshot, but it is going to suck. Yeah, I know that sounds bad, now imagine somebody who sees this game for the game it is (talking about Sega All-Stars) having to hear the same thing about Sega All-Stars. Don't just up and write it off if you have not played it.
Play the game before you throw up your anti-Sega brick wall to hate on it.
The newer Outrun games are very fun and awesome. Sumo is the brains behind the newer OutRun games, so them working on a Sega All-Stars racing game I will have high hopes for it. Sumo has already shown that they can make a very good and very fun racing game

All Sumo did was port Outrun 2 and it's expanded sequel, so I wouldn't call them the brains behind them. Sega-AM2 are the group responsible for both games.
Also, F1 2009 and Dirt 2 for the Wii/PSP were both developed by Sumo Digital for Codemasters and haven't been recieved very well.
Still, the job they did in porting recent Outrun titles and remaking GTI Club+ leaves me optimistic this will be a fun arcade racer.

I was getting this the moment they brought out the Ryo Hazuki video. That was so awesome - him on the motorcycle and, of course, the forklift truck!
And then later I hear this is being made by Sumo Digital! Awesome. I loved their ports of OutRun. I have OutRun 2 on the Xbox, 2006 on the PS2 and Online Arcade on the 360 and they all provide good experiences. I also like their port of GTI Club on the PS3. So they know how to make a racer so should be good fun. Here's hoping for some crazy drifting.

Most likely it is the same situation that has been happening with TJ&E lately. Sega THINKS they own them, start doing something with them, and the original creator guys go "uh hey Sega, remember that talk we had about you not actually owning them? And how we'd maybe like to get paid a little bit?" and then Sega realized they'd have to involve money in it and back out.
I don't think they are opposed to it, I think Sega just refuses to actually give them any compensation. That big "genesis poll" website awhile back shows the situation quite well. Earthworm Jim was doing well in the voting, then Sega realized they don't own it and had to take it off. Toejam & Earl then won. And of course there has been no word about it since because of this situation.
Dear Sega: just because it came out on the genesis does not mean you own the IP. Toejam & Earl was conceptualized and mostly developed by TWO GUYS. Sega corporate basically forced them to make the sequel into a platformer instead of the more unique format of the original. They have a history of messing with those guys, it's pretty lame. They should really just start actually paying them some money because yes I DO want TJ&E in this kind of game, and I also want future TJ&E games as well. One of the guys posted concept art for a DS version of the game with like 4 players, of course so far no one is interested. Good job, Sega.
(probably somewhat inaccurate/misinformed but that's how I feel about things right now rant over)
Re: the game itself, lol sonic in a car again, but Ryo on a forklift, and the fact that Opa Opa and the Bonanza Bros are in is pretty cool. Opa Opa should have Harrier riding on him or something.

The two are essentially the same, but different. Wonder Boy was a bit of a Sega mascot in his own right as well. I have him and Alex Kidd (and some other old Sega stars) standing next to each other. Think it was in Sega Challenge.

I just played the demo for this on XBL and I enjoyed it. The power-ups are mostly familiar if you've ever played a kart racing game before but they threw in a few surprises. I definitely can't wait to see all the special moves the Avatars can do but unfortrunately they are not playable in the demo.
Although it was just a demo, there seemed to be very little room for error if you actually wanted to come in first. The computer controlled characters will race as if they are Nascar vets, rarely slowing down for anything. You also need to drift alot in order to keep up with the rest of the pack. I'm not going to pick this up on day one but eventually I'll get it. It will be another one of those games that's replay value goes thru the roof once you throw in XBL support.

Let me assure you that playing a simulation game with a wheel IS better than with a controller. It simply is. I am talking about simulations games like Forza or whatever. Try to counter-steer with a controller to control your drift, let me know how it goes.
Same for Shmups, using an arcade stick is 10 time more precise than using a controller, it is so easy to evade bullets with a good stick.
Fighting games also can benefit greatly from an arcade stick. Pulling out combos is easier.
