This is an update to an old post I couldn't seem to find...
Eggerland: Meikyuu no Fukkatsu has been beaten, stomped on, set on fire, and I'm in the process of pissing on it's ashes. Two days ago, my mother became, in all likelyhood, the first person in North America to beat the game. Minutes ago, I joined her.
In one of the most sureal moments in my gaming experience, you fight the last boss turn-based RPG style. Yep, RPG style in a puzzle game. Thankfully my previous experience playing imported RPGs gave me a chance to beat it... however, since my mom beat it and also was knocked down to 1 hit point, I'm guessing the fight is rigged so that you can't die.
Let me go on the record saying that of all the video games I've ever played and all my accomplishments as a gamer, beating this game tops the list. After Jophro told me how to beat that one level, all the similar levels turned out to be quite easy. Some of the levels were downright cruel in the amount of perfect timing, dexterity, and patience that they required to beat... some levels took days, some levels took months off my life. The words "Fucker" "Fuck" "Shit" and "Cocksucker" became my primary vocabulary while I was playing the game.
Beating Eggerland Meikyuu no Fukkatsu was not easy. The war has been won, but not without casualties. Two Dreamcast Controllers were destroyed, one memory card ruined, one shirt ripped off my body. My thumb is heavily blistered. My wife thinks I've lost it.
I've beaten Contra on three lives. I've beaten Startropics in one day without taking a single hit... ok, that last one was pretty tough, but it happened fast and there was a lot of luck involved. This time, there was no luck. And although I needed the intelligent Jophro to help me solve one incredibly stupid early level, I still feel a sense of accomplishment.
But as with every great game, I am left with a loss. By beating Eggerland, I have put myself down to one Lolo game that I haven't beaten... an Eggerland game for the Famicom Disk System. Knowing that there will likely never be another Lolo game leaves me feeling empty inside. I shall approch my final Lolo game with a sense of dread. The end is near. The battle is nearly over. A battle I don't want to end.
