I just recently bought my first Sega Genesis and I need some ideas for what games to get. I have Sonic 1,2, and 3, Aladdin, NBA Jam, and Desert Strike so far. Is there any must have games that I need to know about, or any personal favorites? I'm open to pretty much any genre. I've only owned Nintendo systems, so I pretty much missed everything that Sega did.

This topic comes up frequently - use the search function to see some top games lists. Good luck.

I tried that but nothing much came up. I did however find good results in the classic discussion section, so no need to keep this open. Mods can close, delete, or whatever.

I thought a quick search of our classic discussions forum would wield a Genesis Top X list but all I can find was this:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8896&highlight=genesis

I did an index of classic discussions years ago which was later fixed up by Steve Jacobs, but now it's goofed up again. We need someone on that case again.

Anyway:

Gunstar Heroes is the definitive Genesis game evermore if you ask me.

Also worthwhile: Mortal Kombat, Eternal Champions, Alien 3, Robocop v Terminator, Thunderforce 3, Lightening Force, Sonic 2, Streets of Rage, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Zero Tolerance

Kind of a pointless thread as there are so MANY others that have asked this question, as well as a list of the favorite genny games voted by dp members in classic discussions. Maybe he has a better list, probably, I'm sure he's smarter than me starting this whole web site and stuff.

Ys III (It's better on the SNES, but any version of this game is pretty good)

Not exactly. I haven't played the PC Engine version which I'd assume would be the best. I've played both the SNES and Genesis version though.

For the soundtrack, the SNES has a slight edge because of better sound quality. The fact that both games have a widely different sounding music even though it's all the same music, makes both systems have a good soundtrack regardless.

As for the graphics. The SNES has the worst looking Adol. The Genesis one is better done. The town on the Genesis version looks like crap and so does the rest of the people in comparison to the SNES version, but Adol, the person you'll see the entire game looks great. The other thing is that most every dungeon background looks much better on the Genesis. It's give and take, but overall the Genesis version graphics are superior.

LOL, the Genesis Adol has brown hair, making him the worst looking one by default.
