Is this in relation to Chavez's completely opposing political ideology or the complete lack of a continent-smashing military machine?

Seriously, Chavez is being a paranoid dick here, but let's keep our facts at least marginally straight here.

Not so much these days...

Looking at the attitudes toward dictatorships in recent television;

House - Dr. Chase smothers a Black African Dictator... with a pillow... O_O
Chuck - The Castle Crew saves the olive skinned South American Dictator many times, finally with a transfusion of CIA American blood...

The possible social percepts/metaphors alone send the mind reeling.

Chavez... You are in bad company on this one. Just because people try to kill you, don't blame video games alright? LOL

Whilst I don't fully agree with him, Chavez didn't say ALL games are bad! Just the ones promoting war, and particuarly games where you have to attack "enemies of America" such as Venezuela. Can't really blame him for that, can you? If there was a game made about invading America I'm sure most of you would be complaining about it....

Icarus Moonsight
01-22-2010, 01:52 AM
Not if the invaders are space aliens or zombies... We love them!

I'm big on non-aggression and firmly in the moralist camp, but I'm still going to gib pixels into tiny bloody nubblets with a flak cannon, without a single gram of guilt or inconsistency, because... *drum roll* It's not real!

If there was such a game there would have to be three factions

Invaders (possibly from space!)
US Military
Every gun owning citizen within six states itching to blast invaders.

There is *NO WAY* that game could be anyway realistic without that last faction.

A Chinese General (sorry, IDR whom exactly) was asked about their massive (numbers) Army's capability to invade the US... He basically said the very attempt would be foolish (may be paraphrasing a bit), "There would be a gun barrel behind every blade of grass." He was referring to the citizenry, not the US regular military or reserves. It would take them weeks to recall to the homeland in an invasion. They are pretty much all deployed elsewhere. :/

Also, Chavez just said that the Haitian earthquakes were cause by a new weapon the US has developed to destroy Iran... Yeah, sure. Pass the bowl Chavie, don't park on it. :p

I believe it was actually Admiral Yamamoto of the Japanese Navy who made that statement.... Maybe some other guy said it as well but that's who I've always heard that quote attributed to.

And I can't take any dictator seriously who thinks the US has a weather machine that can cause earthquakes.

Well, technically there have been some games of that nature. In the WWII strategy game Iron Storm you were able to invade the US playing as the Japanese or Germans. Battlestations: Pacific had a Japanese campaign mode going up to an invasion of Hawaii. Turning Point: Fall of Liberty was a fictional history setting of the Germans invading New York.

I doubt any of those games are portraying an attack on America as a good thing / the right thing though.

Well, that's the problem. Initiating a war is never the good or right thing. Defending from an invasion is completely different.

China 'liberating' the US... That smacks of irony no? LOL

What about defending from an invasion by initiating a war? It's the weak excuse often given in REAL LIFE! Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction!

BTW, I'm not defending Chavez's attack on games, games all too often get the blame for social wrongs. BUT, I can fully understand why he's angry.

I think this blog says it better than I can about the amount of propaganda in war sims:

I honestly always took whatever locations used in games as less of some political statement and more of a "where is someplace besides the standard middle east/eastern Europe stuff that would make a plausible setting?".

And call me "naive" or whatever, but these "war" games pretty much boil down to setting up a basic "vs match" survival game where the enemy is interchangeable. It doesn't matter if the bad guys are terrorists, aliens, or zombie farm animals...the gameplay remains pretty much the same.
