View Full Version : Strangest or most random character name ever?

What character seems to have the most random name ever? (No loopholes! The developer names at the end of Castlevania don't count!)

My vote goes to the evil skeleton villain in Clash at Demonhead. You know, that one who challenges the hero and stashes away a medallion, proving to be a great adversary, and aptly named... Tom Guycott...

Runner up goes to Error.

Guybrush. I know how the name was chosen but it's still a weird name if you think about it.

EDIT:
Also from Lure of the Temptress, you save someone from the dungeon and he follows you for the rest of the game. His name is Ratpouch. It's the family friendly alternative to "Douchebag".

Error and Bagu are just programming jokes. Bagu is a direct romanization of the Japanese characters used to represent the English word "bug".

As far as I'm concerned nothing beats out the PC Engine game Fiend Hunter in ridiculousness and terribleness in the name of its hero: Feed Sluster.

Although my much loved tri-Ace games have some absurd names too, like Fate Linegod and Edge Maverick.

Schwa. I mean, seriously, it's an upside down "e." Where the hell does the name "SCHWA" come from in there?

As for a serious answer, I always found the following names a bit strange:
Tingle (Zelda series)
Eggman (Sonic series)
Shoot Gunner (Metal Gear)
Waluigi (Mario series)

About 90% of the names of Pokemon.

Waluigi is seriously the most random name ever; Wario, I always got because "wa" means bad and it was a clever pun. Waluigi just reeks of laziness.

You've done the research? It's a pun of "Warui" and "Luigi".

Gaiares has a villain named ZZ Badnusty, or ZZ Badnasty, depending on which cutscene it is.

Amazingly, most pokemon names are a specific reference. Some of the first-gen Japanese names are straight up lazy even, like Freezer and Polygon. Not that Mr Mime is much better.

Fine...if it's still a pun, I will re-state Shoot Gunner as a strange/random/not so clever name.

Heh, this.

Also, I love Waluigi as a character, he needs his own game or a game with Wario IMO.

I think a pretty strange name is Cloud Strife. Pretty stupid too.

Philbright Westriverside Warehouserock XXVI from Zone of the enders- The Fist of Mars, Wild Woody from... Wild Woody SCD, tx-11 Bloody Brad from Metal Gear and Noob Saibot from the Mortal Kombat series.

All from this page:http://games.ign.com/articles/812/812861p1.html

tx-11 Bloody Brad sounds like a really gross porn star name...

Schtolteheim Reinbach IV from the Suikoden series. First off the odd name was a moniker you could choose in Suikoden 1, then they went ahead and made the real person recruitable in Suikoden IV? Odd.

When I was a kid I always thought it was weird that in Wizardry you went into Trebor's Dungeon and had to defeat Werdna. It took me a few years to realize that the game was developed by two guys named Robert and Andrew.

Some of the worst I've seen were from Evolution and it's sequel... just a few of the names: Mag Launcher (the hero), Linear Cannon (his love interest), Chain Gun, Gre Nade, and Pepper Box. I'm still not sure whether this was a localization mistake on Ubi Soft's part, or whether this is one of those Japanese games that's not supposed to be taken seriously.

Speaking of which, I'm amazed no one has mentioned the Guilty Gear series.... Ky Kiske? Sol Badguy? Chip Zanuff? My understanding is that this IS one of those games meant to be intentionally ridiculous though, so mission accomplished I guess.

It tells the reason for this in the Developer interview in the back of the instruction book.

Q. Why did you decide to use the name of weapons for the character names?

A. The person in charge of the Evolution setting, Mr. Matsumura, loves the military. It was his idea to use the different type of weapons as character names...

But I'll agree, it still comes off pretty weird.

My favorite strange random name would have to be the legendary (amongst those I know) Sam Bohanna from Legacy of the Wizard! It was just some random little enemy. But it just cracked me up so I took the name for a screen name and used it for everything that I could. Instant messengers, Unreal Tornament, etc. Then my friends started using variations of it as well like Hanna Bosanna, Sam Bohanna 4 real, etc.

Then one day Phantasy Star Online came out for the Dreamcast. Naturally I decided to use Sam Bohanna and it refused to let me make a character with that name. I was like "What the hell?! Why not?!" Then after some clever experimenting I realized that the PSO filter was catching the first 5 letters of the name. SAMBO. I couldn't believe I hadn't noticed that before. No telling how many people I was offending on other online games using that name. LOL Oh, well. The name is still classic in my book.

And who can forget Kushnood Butt?

I was actually thinking about this this morning. My guess is that they wanted to name him "Howard Geese", but somewhere down the line, the Japanese "last name comes first" rule got in the way and we ended up with Geese Howard.

Don't take this seriously, but that's what I think happened. :p

Most, if not all of the Guilty Gear character names actually come from somewhere, usually various musicians. Chip Z'Nuff is the (stage) name of the bassist from Enuff Z'Nuff. Axl Low is obviously Axl Rose. Ky Kiske is the combination of Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske, two members of Helloween. Sol Badguy is an obscure Queen reference.

I personally always found everything in Clash At Demonhead to be goofily named. Bang!

Tom Guycott was my favorite though. That whole game just sounds ridiculous. Whenever I see a skeleton based monster in a game I refer to them as Tom Guygotts. Also, whenever I play pretty much ANY adventure game and am asked about the plot, I tell someone that I have to defeat the evil Tom Guygott and the other 8 governors.

First thing that came to mind while reading this thread was "Brick Jagger", the villain from Chuck Rock 2: Son Of Chuck. Although that's probably more clever than random. :-)

Is it just the US translations for the games or did he have different names on the Japanese versions too(I'd assume it's just bad localization.) Oh yeah, and don't forget Dulk Fakis(Phantasy Star Universe.)

*edit*

Anyways.

Denim Powell from Tactics Ogre. I've later found out that people have actually named their kid Denim in real life.
Butz from Final Fantasy 5. I like the US name better.
Schtolteheim Reinbach II and III from Suikoden 4. Schtolteheim Reinbach IV can be used by Tir on the first Suikoden as Viktor uses III. Other characters in the series also throw the name out.

Yeah and in Suikoden II Riou can call himself a variant of the name, Sturtheim Reinbach. I heard the translation in Suikoden II wasn't as correct i.e. circlet was spelled circuret, so that's probably why.

Another vote for Tom Guycott. I've registered software on my computer in that dude's name.

When I was young and playing the Mega Man series for the first time, I always thought "Roll" was an incredibly dopey name. It wasn't until years later that I found out Megaman = Rockman ("Rock" and "Roll"). Still corny though.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Oozie Nelson from Rival Turf! (SNES) You have to wonder who on the localization team made the connection between the character of a musclebound guy in a red cop uniform fighting hordes of thugs with wrestling moves, and the 1950s ideals of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.

Maybe it was the same guy that did the cover art for Phalanx.

I blame the internet.

You mean Lawfer? Llewelyn's Japanese name is Lawry, so I guess you could make an argument that it could also be romanized as Lawly.

Lawfer's name is pretty silly anyway, though, given that he's all about justice and upholding law and such. Lots of the Japanese names are goofy too. Badrach was Badluck, Jelanda was Geraldo, Mystina was Meltina, Lezard was Lizard, and so on. Although the official products weren't always consistent in how they romanized the names.

Two of my favorites:

Dr. Ferdinand Social (Master of Darkness, SMS): He's supposed to be British. That doesn't sound British. Or does it and I just don't know it?
Wink Baufield (Phalanx, SNES): Why is this guy flying an intergalactic "enforce fighter" when it sounds like he should be hosting a new version of Tic-Tac-Dough or What's This Song?

I once knew a guy who played A Link to the Past with Link renamed as "HK195." He said he didn't want to use Link because he thought he might get his save file mixed up with someone else's, so when the name entry screen came up, he went with HK195 because it was printed on a cardboard box nearby and he didn't want to spend much time thinking up a name. And yes, as that suggests, he was a pretty weird guy.
