View Full Version : Sealed Super Metroid

Yesterday I was in one of my local pawns, and I spotted what I believe is a factory sealed Player's Choice version of Super Metroid for $20.00.
When I examined it up close, I noticed it had the vertical seam on the back and the seams did not look shrink-wrapped. The plastic felt thick, and not cheap like a reseal.
The only damage I saw on it was that there was a tear/hole in plastic on the side of the box. Also, the box looked a little crushed.
Now, I'm considering going back to get the game. But I'm wondering, if it does have a legit factory seal on it, is it worth anything by keeping it sealed, or should I just open it and play it?

Simply being complete in box makes it worth a bit more than the $20, I would imagine. And being sealed would probably nab you at least $60 on ebay, if not more. If I were you and I didn't have a copy already I would buy it, sell it on ebay and then purchase an opened, complete copy while making a little profit.

Thanks for the advice, tubeway! Unfortunately, I don't have an ebay account, and all the horror stories of people getting ripped off have made me reluctant to sell stuff online.
Anyway, I think I'll go back to the pawn shop tomorrow and pick up the game. Who knows? It could be useful in the future as emergency funds, or as trade bait for some other game.

Buy it. I snatched a factory sealed one off of ebay a couple years ago for $50. Even if it's not 100% mint there are people who would pay you more than $20 for it just because it's still factory sealed.

That's amazing because I sold a sealed Player's Choice (or "Million Seller" or whatever) copy for right around $225 back in 2003. Of course, mine was dead new.
I'd snap that one up for $20 without hesitation.

Well, I went back to the pawn shop today and picked up the game. :D When I have time, I'll upload some pictures of it.

Well the price of some sealed Snes games has come down considerably in the last six years. I got mine in 2007 but I will admit that it was a pretty good deal for a sealed players choice edition in 9.3-9.5 mint condition.

Thats excellent. You will definitely get your money's worth, rather playing it(it constantly gets named as one of the best games of all time) or selling it(the very least you'd get is $40 but I'm sure even in the condition it's in you could manage to get upwards of $70 for it).

Okay, so I finally got some pictures uploaded into my Room of Doom. Here's the link:

The pictures don't really show the damage to the plastic wrap. Two of the corners have small tears. Also, there's a fairly large hole that starts in the bottom left corner on the back of the box, and extends to the side of the box over the flap. Of course, there are also several white creases in the box because it's been crushed a bit.
So, can anyone confirm whether the seal is legit? Also, does anyone know what the game's approximate value is in this condition?

Good score, but she is dinged up pretty bad. The seal looks original, as far as I can see from the photos, but I would need focused, macro closeups on the seams to know for sure.
Not at all what most would consider "collector quality", however (if there is such a thing). I think The 1 2 P's estimate is probably pretty accurate. Could even go a bit higher, if you were patient enough. I just think it's a little too torn and smushed to be worth much more. Fun item to own, either way!

You're lucky it was still there. When I've returned for games like that, 9 times out of ten it'll be gone.
Great score though.

I third this. Even if it's not a pretty condition, it's still new and a hell of a great game.

After taking into consideration what everyone has suggested, I've decided what I'm going to do with the game.
I'm going to list it on Craigslist and see if I get any interest/decent offers.
However, if the offers aren't to my liking, I'll just keep it for myself and enjoy playing it! (If course, I'm only going to cut open one side of the seal. That way I'll still have a reminder of my awesome find!)

Don't open it!!! Save it sealed and buy a cart only copy for 10-15 bucks to play.

Good luck on CraigsList I would also suggest stopping by a few more retro game forums to see if you get any interest there. There are a lot of hard core collectors out there...
