Is it safe to play a Game Gear with no battery covers?

Hi guys,

Last year, my stepdad gave me his old Game Gear. He had replaced the battery covers on either side of the system with these weird handgrips that include some sort of rechargable batteries inside them, but he did it because he has large hands. Anyway, I have been able to get the system to run with the power cord and I don't want to use the handgrips because my hands are smaller. Am I going to electrocute myself playing this Game Gear with the power cord plugged in and without the handgrips or original battery covers?

And on a related note, might anyone out there have the left and right battery covers for an original gray non-Majesco Game Gear? I know this isn't buy/sell/trade, but I figured I would ask since it's related to my question.

I'm sure there are countless tales of people who did so and lived to tell about it.

Seriously though, there's not going to be enough voltage(if any) to do anything to you. There's probally a greater chance of you hurting the Game Gear with static electricity from touching the battery contacts but even that isn't likely to happen.

Back in the day of 9-volt batteries, I used to test them by putting my tongue to the + and - terminals. The degree of buzz determined the charge in the battery. Your 6 AA's are putting out the same voltage, so nothing to worry about.

Exactly - I've touched the contacts and had a slight buzz before, but nothing serious.

He's not worried about the batteries though, he's worried about it being plugged into an AC outlet. It's still going to be about 9V and nothing to worry about though. I'm not even sure there'd be any voltage arcoss the battery teminals anyways. Usually an AC jack acts like a switch that disconnects the batteries when you have it plugged in.

The worst thing that could happen is that your hands will get sore from the sharp edges.

When the 9v is plugged in there is no current running through the battery connections.

You are safe and will live to play another day :)

you can play it plugged in without the batteries if you have the game gear ac adapter or genesis model 2 ac adapter

Well that depends, are you going to stick your tongue in an electrical outlet while playing your Game Gear? Because I'd recommend putting the Game Gear down before electrocuting yourself.

But I'd not worry about it. If your realy concerned about it, you could cover the back with electic tape. The tape wont leave much residue and your concern of frying yourself should pass.
