I'm curious as to whether a Genesis 3 has better or worse video and audio encoders than these:

Sony CXA1645 video encoder
Whatever audio encoder is used in 3/4 motherboard Genesis model 2's.

Also, do model 3's have different motherboard revisions, or did Majesco stick with just one?

The audio out is Mono only unless you do a mod. As far as clarity goes it seemed to me to be on par with Genesis 2 audio otherwise. I don't have a big ear for that sort of thing though. The video is decent for composite as it benefited from the better Sony chip. It looks better then composite on the other models mostly it seemed like, but I rarely use composite anyway. The chip can be tapped for s-video and the svideo quality is extremely nice, a tad superior to the Sony CXA1145 in terms of quality.

The Genesis 3 is exactly like a VA3/VA4 Genesis 2, but with no Stereo sound. Majesco made 2 different motherboards, VA1 and VA2. The difference between the two is that the VA2 has a more complete GOAC(I think some RAM is integrated into it or something) and is harder to apply a Virtua Racing compatibility fix to(I killed my VA2 Genesis 3 after a failed compatibility fix) due to one extra pin being disconnected from the cartridge slot to the GOAC. As long as you don't want to attempt a Virtua Racing compatibility fix, you're safe with a Genesis 3; it has the best video you can get and very clear sound.
