Ever play a rpg and beat it over time, then disconnect that system for a long amount of time and then hook it back up and play around with said rpg only to realize you have no idea what you're doing since it's been so long?!

A long period of time? How long? I'm usually lost again in about a week, either that or I stop at one point in a game and try to come back to it, only to have forgotten the entire control scheme let alone just that moment. Damn that FF7!

I did that with FFVIII. Even though I'm on Disc 3 and have been for several years (right after the goofy outer space thing), I'm going to have to restart from the beginning if I ever want to finish it and know what's happening.

at this point I've given up on FFVIII, it's been six months and I never made it past disc one. heh.
however I went back to Deception 3 earlier this week and got back in ok. however chapter 21 is kicking my butt.

Even worse, I'm playing Dragon Warrior 7 at home and Lufia:Ruins of Lore at work on the Gameboy. I keep getting parts of the games mixed up. Looking for a location from one game and trying to find it in the other.

I set down Xenogears about 30 hours in. Tried to go back and play it....NO clue what the hell was going on. Gonna have to start over! *sob*

I haven't played Xenogears in a few weeks sinc ehitting the start of disc 2..but I mostly rememeber the confusion.
PSIV I beat a few years ago, then had acouple games on it before I put the CDX up till recently. Slowly remembering what I'mdoing and the combos I set up. Now if I can get myself to continue FF9...

I'm horrible about finishing RPGs these days. I'm one of those types who prefers to start over from scratch if it's been too long between play sessions.
I've made it about 35 hours into Dragon Warrior VII not once but twice. I don't know if I'll ever bother to start over again, it just seems a bit unnecessary, but I'd really like to finish the game just to say I did.
I made it 65 hours into Xenogears one summer before I put it down. I hate having that blemish on my record... but if I ever want to finish it, I'm going to have to start over... le sigh....

Yeah got stuck on FFVII , loaned it to my cuzin, got it back months later and forgot everything ive ever done because my dumb ass erased the save on my memory card, (i loaned him the game cuz i was too busy playing shinning force 3 on saturn and was sick of psx). i rehooked my psx up a while ago and beat it for the 5th time, and i still am finding new things lolz.

I hate doing this too, but usually it's SO long between putting it down and picking it back up that it's like a whole new game to me. I did it with FFV on PSX, Chrono Cross, Xenogears (50 hours or so in), and probably a few others.
Then I got a PS2, and I decided to start a new game of FF6. After a couple of play sessions, I go to load it up, nothing. Wtf? I try a few more times, take the disc out, go to the memory manager, it isn't even reading the card.
Turns out those hugeass 360 block PSOne memory cards don't work in PS2. I can't say it ever worked very well in my original Playstation, but it never ever erased the thing. The whole thing was wiped, I went to gamestop and got a new card, and hooked up my memory card to the playstation they had there to see if I could salvage anything... nope, all gone. 200%+ in SOTN, 20 hours into FF5, 50 into Xenogears, 30 into Chrono Cross, all my FF7, 8, and 9 saves, all my MGS saves... such a monsterous pain in the ass.
I've gone back and beaten FF5 and Chrono Cross, but I still haven't had the guts to pick up Xenogears again. It's the next game I plan on playing after I finish all the games I'm in the middle of right now, and I just got the Strategy Guide for $5 off Amazon.com, so it shouldn't be a rough battle through =P
Unfortunately, I got Legend of Dragoon about a year ago and started playing it, but decided it sucks nuts about 6 hours in. I kinda want to go back and play through it, but I don't know if I can handle the stupid long random battles. I would love that game if the random battles weren't at minimum 10 minutes long. It tried too hard to be like FF7 and failed miserably, although I'd love to see a sequel on PS2.

Guilty as charged.
I've done this with nearly all the Final Fantasy's. Most I've restarted, only to have the same thing happening again. However I am determined not to spend as much $ this summer, so I'm playing through all my games, rediscovering everything. I've been home for a month and gotten through FF X and as I sit here typing this, I'm on Disc 3 in Lunatic Pandora in 8. *Almost done* then it's time to start 9, then 1-6 (taking out that one they haven't released here yet.) After that, the sky is the limit.

This is me in Thousand Arms, and Lunar SSSC. I got some ways in and just stopped, and can't restart cuz I got no idea what the hell I'm doing. Shame too...I really wanted to finish Thousand Arms.

With some games, you can use game scripts to help remind you of what happened before -- that's how I recently got back into, and finally finished, Kingdom Hearts -- which I had started the first day it came out. LOL
Or sometimes a walkthrough can fill you in enough to refresh your memory.
This is why I really TRY not to have more then three games going at once. :)

Heh, I just realized that I'm well on my way to finishing my 5th Gamecube game in a row after having put down all 5 for quite a while. Zelda, Mario, ED, Metroid Prime and Monkey Ball 2. Man, soon as I finish Mario my ever-growing PSOne RPG collection needs some lovin. That, or I'll go out and buy Skies of Arcadia Legends just so I can keep playin the cube LOL

With FF9 I'm somewhere on disc 3 (I have where marked in the stretgy guide along with all my papers), Xenogears start of disc so that's not too bad. FF X the Highlands if I ever get ambitious to start playing that again, Chrono Cross somewhere early in the game still, I think Viper mansion. FF4 and FF6 I've beaten numerous times before so I can really mostly pick up where I left off in those.
PSIV I'm slowly remember what I need to do in the 2 saved games left (Might erase one and restart), the "Talk" feature to remember what you're doing helps! Just a matter of tracking down the tech and Skill lists again to remember my combos and what most them do.
I also popped in Lunar SSS again today..no clue what I was doing but brought back good memories.

heh heh - I've yet to *finish* an RPG in the modern era (i.e. PSX to current).
That's what I figure gamefaqs is for. I try to get up to speed on what's happened and continue from where I left off. If I bother finishing the game in the first place that is. I have been tossing around the idea of restarting FF VII from the beginning though.

Strangely enough, I don't think I've ever started an RPG over just because I had forgotten my place in the plot. I've played through some games twice to get better endings, but I've never felt the need to reboot a quest solely for the story. I can usually remember where I'm at in a title, and starting the whole thing over again seems a waste of all the hours I've invested already.
For example, I just picked up Skies of Arcadia from the 20-hour mark, and everything about the game is coming back to me --including, I'm afraid, my resentment of the random battles.

This is one of the major flaws of console RPGs, and one of the big reasons they should be called SIAGs (Stat & Inventory Accumulation Games). It's not really about the story, it's about gaining stats and junk and raising your numbers. It's just like a platform action game with the exception that killing more guys makes you more powerful.
More story-based RPGs (what I would call real RPGs, although that is debatable I suppose) will give you a journal where you can record what you've done and, if you've forgotten, can open up the journal and get back up to speed. They also have handy quest lists that show you which quests you've completed and which are still outstanding.

Holy geez I've done that with way too many RPG's.
Chrono Trigger
Wild Arms
Lufia 1&2
Lunar 1&2
Traysia
Monkey Island
Xenogears
plus many more
There's also the Final Fantasy games, but I don't give a shit about them. ^_^

That's kind alike PSIV's "Talk" feature where you can remember the last imporant conversation you had involving your current mission.
