View Full Version : Classic Gamers?

As much as I love collecting retro video games I have one huge problem. I hate playing games alone. If it be switching off the controller while playing ninja gaiden or having someone to beat Street of Rage with, this is a very crucial part of gaming for me. I'm even contemplating building an 2 player MAME cab but the only thing holding be back is one problem, who would I even play it with?
I've got lots of friends and a girlfriend (hell would freeze over before she'd every even watch me play a game) but none are really "hardcore gamers", so if it's not call of duty or halo it's hard to get them to sit down with a retro game and play thru it with me.
I notice that a lot of people that are into retro gaming (or at least the people that make web shows and such) have at least 1 close friend they game with but I can't find anyone who's into gaming like I am.
Anyone have these strange dependency issues like me?

I'd pick a good multiplayer over a single player 9 times out of 10, but sometimes I really prefer playing by myself. Of course, even when playing a one player, it is fun to have someone sit through it with you (especially true with RPGs).

I prefer single player gaming. But multiplayer gaming has its own special charm. I get my multiplayer gaming kicks from playing ps2 games online. Some games are officially no longer online, but LAN tunneling programs let you play them online basically forever. The only people who put the effort up to get these games online are hardcore gamers, so it is really fun being able to play these online with like-minded people.
Too bad there isn't a way to play retro games online without emulaters and such. I only like playing on real hardware. I have tried playing old 2d games online with emulaters a few times and ended up running into ridiculous lag problems.

I can sort of relate.
I have 2 Xboxs in the house, which are linked up. I have 4 or 5 games that can be played on both, but no one to ever play them with. I did get a chance in November when we had a party, but I was so much better than the other guy we quit after 30 minutes. In the 2 years I've had this set up, that's the only time I've ever gotten to use it.
While my plays video games, she doesn't really like to play against me. I'm seriously not that great at these games, it's just that everyone else is so terrible.
But I don't mind playing games by myself at all. I have a few arcade games and a decent collection, and love drinking a few beers and playing 1942 *or whatever). I do wish I had people to play games with sometimes, but since moving to South Carolina I don't have any local friends.

I knew a couple people as much as I am. It was atleast 10 years ago that I was friends with a guy named Jordan. His dad and mom had a ton of games. Unfortunately his dad was in the military and they moved.
One of my best friends that I knew since I was in first grade was big on everything. Comics, wrestling, video games, etc. We would always play multiplayer games or just like HappehLemons said, switch out single player games. Me, Watemon, and Josh(another friend,) would hang out often and ended up with amazing multiplayer sessions. Now that I no longer live there it's like a void has filled up the awesomeness of multiplayer gaming as hardly do it anymore with games I absolutely love because I can't find anyone as into games as I am and everything has to be the new type of games like FPS or MMO games.
Once I turned 18 I moved from NC to FL. My cousin who I'm friends with plays games a lot, but isn't as open to them as I am. There are a lot of games he bashes without playing, a lot I really love and he won't try. Still have a lot of fun playing games together, but yeah.
The other people I know play games, but really don't play anything prior to a current gen system.
But yeah. I'd love to find someone as interested in classic games as I am, but it would also be nice that they were also a good player and not someone who likes the games but is an absolute boredom to watch or play against.

Heh, we should start some digitpress thing for forum members to try to meet up for old school multiplayer gaming if people live near each other. It's a long shot, but perhaps it could work.

I'm the same way, but only because some friends aren't available or into the same genre's as much as I am.

I, fortunately, have a girlfriend who loves playing SNES as much as I do. We either do multiplayer rpgs or beat'emups, or we just play one player games together, alternating controls based on "I don't feel like controlling right now."

Exactly what I was thinking.
But on the other hand it could be a total bust. I wanted to see how this thread went before I even suggested anything like that :)

I have one good friend that is into the same games / anime as me and we play a lot of games old and new. The rest mostly just play whatever new FPS is out.

well there are a few
Gamera (1965)
Gamera vs. Barugon (1966)
Gamera vs. Gyaos (1967)
Gamera vs. Viras (1968)
...............ohhh, gamers, i thought you said classic Gameras
i have the same issue. though i prefer single player games i do like multiplayer. me and my friend used to scour the SNES rentals for 2 player games. we tended to prefer 2 player simultaneous. we were also big on PC "hot seat" multiplayer games since he didn't have a pc and even if he did the internet was not well known to us. when we roomed together at college we had the perfect enviornment for 2 player gameing with our pc's hooked to the LAN but unfortunitly by that time he just wasn't into it. i used to constantly pester him to play some STARS!, Master of Orion 2 or civilization multi with me but he just didn't want to so i ended up playing alot of rouge sphere over the net.
i recently realised a week or so ago i have the space and the number of pc's at my house to set up a neat little room for LAN parties, a dream i used to have...then i realized i had noone to invite over that would want to :(

I'm definitely a single-player gamer most of the time, but yet, multiplayer is a very rewarding and fun (abeit different) experience. I have the same issue with people who only play Halo/COD and Gears. I will metion to friends about having a game night and they are like "YEAH LETS ALL RAPE FACE ON LIVE!!!!! WOO!" And im sitting there like.....meh.
I would much rather get a group of close friends together for some good 'ol retro gaming. Modern gaming is so cliched and trendy, for the most part. Not to say I dont enjoy new games...but, the culture has changed a lot (even in the 17 years I've been a "gamer).

Dude, it's true. I mention I want to play a game, with most people, they say, "Yeah, sure. You got a PS3?" Or "I'll play you Halo 3 or Modern Warfare II on Live." Damn. I only have one friend that comes over and is cool with playing classic games.

Before i moved last May, i had few friends interested in games at all. One of my friends has a PS3 and is really into Borderlands, Red Faction, GTA, etc. Another friend has a Wii and 360 but has turned into a very casual gamer over the past almost 10 years that i've known him. He will play anything if I ask him to, but he really only plays DDR in his free time. There is another friend i have a few towns away from me that does like classic gaming, but we are rarely able to hook up with each other because he has such a busy schedule. Finally, I have one other friend who has an NES and copy of SMRPG, but he is so antisocial he never answers the phone when I call him and I have yet to be able to contact him to ask him to add me on steam (he spends the majority of his time playing PC games.) My girlfriend likes to play PlayStation games, but my mom wouldn't trust me being together with her outside of their view >_> i love how she treats me like a criminal or scandalist or something, like i'm a rebel on the inside! XD
When i moved, I made three new good friends. One of them has a PS3, but has personally complained to me about the lack of entertainment value that classic games supposedly have. He always says "what do they have over the PS3 and Resistance? I just don't see what makes them amazing." Another friend I have has a bunch of classic games and systems (I was recently trying to restore them after a long stay in his attic, but little worked. He later got another NES) After us spending the time to clean all the games, he told me he wishes to pursue classic gaming as a hobby, and he plans to buy a new SNES and fix up his Genesis. His girlfriend (and my friend) also loves gaming, and we played Beatles Rock Band and Resident Evil for hours last Friday.

I mostly play fighting games, so GGPO and 2DF have been a godsend.
