I'm about to import a Super Famicom and I was wondering, what are the best Japanese exclusive SFC games?

Magical Pop'n is one of the better platformers, probably second only to DoReMi in my opinion.

The Dragon Quest games are a good addition if the language barrier isn't an issue for you. Final Fantasy V is another RPG I would recommend, although it's easily found in English now.
Other than that, some cool anime games didn't make it to the US, particularly the Tenchi Muyo RPG, Sailor Moon RPG, and some interesting Dragon Ball games.
I know there's a lot more out there, but these are the main ones that are popping into my head.

Having played both DQ games on the Super Famicom, I whole heartedly suggest playing the DS remakes instead. They are superior in every respect, plus are officially translated.

I got a whole ton of Super Famicom games before I even thought about getting a console (and I still don't have a SFC). Doing things backwards is popular I guess...

Ah thank you, kind sir. It's nice to be remembered :)
Yes, I am alive! Also, I recommend Ikermel's www.videogameden.com
And yeah, DoReMi Fantasy is awesome, not only is it the best import game on SNES IMHO, I also consider it one of the system's best titles, period. Game was smooth and polished as heck. Games don't get much more charming than DoReMi

Why can't I find Magical Pop'N for less than $150, and DoReMi anywhere?

Keep looking. And wow, has Magical Pop'N really jumped up THAT high in price? I got it around $30 three and a half years ago. I guess it's gained some major hype exposure in the last 3 years or so...

Anyways. I'll add to Magical Pop'n and Do-Re-Mi Fantasy being some of the best Japanese exclusives as well. Amazing games. Also other games you should get(the RPGs I wouldn't recommend unless you can understand Japanese or you're only purchasing the game to own and then download the game and a translation patch to play.)
Front Mission Gun Hazard
Great Battle 4 and 5
Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Dragon Quest 6
Fire Emblem series
Feda Emblem of Justice
Magical Land of Wozz
Romancing Saga 3
Shin Megami Tensei 2

How can you say that Dragon Quest 6 for DS is superior to the Super Famicom game. It's not even out yet.

gamebaz.com has DoReMi for around $40. You could also enquire over at the risingstuff forums and see if the owners can get in a copy.

DQ IV was an NES game. I assume that the DS DQ6 will be superior to the fan translated SFC version, which is full of bugs and is incomplete. DQ6 will probably be out this year.
And if you can't find Do Re Mi Fantasy for the SFC, it was released on the Virtual Console, so if you are purchasing just to play, I suggest that route.

Not full of bugs. Just some game crashing errors that can be avoided. When a complete version is released(if ever) by Dejap(since they took the project over,) we can play through the game the way it was meant to be played(in a language we can all understand.)

The DQ6 fan translation will never be finished (I assume that Dark Force, the guy behind Dejap, has been dead for years, and if not he has done a very good job of hiding himself). And I say that the bug that freezes the game if you back out of the menus is incredibly annoying. Sure, you could play the fan translation all the way through, but then, you could also wait until the DS version comes out with better graphics, improved gameplay mechanics, and bonus dungeon.

The number of worthwhile SFC games is ridiculous, so I'll stick to making recommendations from what I personally own. If I include games that have a good reputation or good stuff I've tried via emulation, I could be here all day.
Bahamut Lagoon *
Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
Dark Half *
Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi *
Emerald Dragon *
Feda: The Emblem of Justice *
Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo (available on DS, but better on SFC I feel) *
Ganbare Goemon: Kirakira Douchuu - Boku ga Dancer ni Natta Wake
Marvelous: Mouhitotsu no Takarajima *
Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Koudou
Pop'n TwinBee
Romancing Sa·Ga 3 *
Star Ocean *
Tengai Makyou Zero *
TwinBee: Rainbow Bell Adventure
Wonder Project J *
I marked the ones that are especially text-heavy, and, yeah, that's practically all of them since I'm a big RPG fan. I'll leave it up to you how you want to approach text-heavy games, but I highly suggest you play them in one way or another. Even if you play them in Japanese (which is the only option in some cases) and aren't fluent in Japanese, they can still be thoroughly enjoyed, just as I did.

Maybe because the remake is available in English on the PSP?
Although, having played both beginning to end, I can say that they're vast different experiences, and anyone who thinks they know what it's like playing the Super Famicom game based on experience with the PSP remake would be sorely mistaken. And even though the PSP remake is really fun, I feel the original is better. Honestly, the PSP remake is kind of a hack job; they farmed it out to some unrelated company and had them throw SO1 into a Star Ocean 2 shell. By using graphics and audio based on SO2, which wasn't that remarkable on a technical level by PS1 standards, the PSP remake looked outdated at release and loses the wow factor that the graphics and sound of the Super Famicom original have. And then you have a ton of design and gameplay differences on top of that. And even though there are several things about the fan translation that annoy me, it's still infinitely more respectful to both the developers and the fan base than the localization of First Departure which changed things willy-nilly for the worse throughout the entire game. I can't read "Muah" without thinking of somebody throwing up, or "T'Nique" without thinking of rappers.

I liked Star Ocean First Departure better than the SNES game. The original is a great game but it really doesn't feel as if you actually have control during battles. At all.
I was interested in its release for awhile and glad that it surpassed the original(in my opinion.) Not only did it succeed the original, the music was remade well, the voice acting was some of the best in any game I've played, and being a disc game, load times are almost non existant which was one thing I liked the most.
Aside from the world map it kept true to the level design of the original. Second Story already has some of the best looking prerendered and anime graphics graphics and while keeping similar looking graphics, First Departure varied them enough to where you don't seem like you're going through the exact same game as Star Ocean 2.
I will admit there are a few flaws on First Departure though. Characters during battle, except whoever you yourself are playing as, seem like they're absolutely retarded and won't do anything unless you have them waste TP. Also, another flaw in the battle system is the triple attack. Not too much of a flaw as they made it work good, but it's the fact they added it into the second game.
The triple attack being added into the second game is just unfair. It makes Ashton from being the absolute best character with the ultimate weapons as into only being as good as Claude. Also. Early in the game Ashton and his extremely quick attack in the Second Story can take down all enemies like nothing with the extremely quick slash speed. I love the pause after the third attack(/sarcasm.) Because of the triple attack, attacks that end up doing a few attacks in a row are also now worthless.
Instead I would have rather seen them rebalance the second title with magic users being more useful and single attack being kept in there.

Star Ocean 2 is basically my favorite game ever, and even I can't get behind that. o_O It's certainly not a bad looking game, but visually it was nothing special for its time. It definitely can't compare to the original Star Ocean, which pushed the Super Famicom to its limits. And most people hate Minato Koio's character designs in The Second Story (I have a soft spot for them, though).
The triple attack was every bit as damaging to the first Star Ocean as it was to its sequel. It completely changes the balance and focus of the gameplay. It makes the game even easier, and it takes the focus entirely off of moves because the triple attack is generally more effective and uses up nothing. In the original, the focus was on linking moves, especially later in the game when you get the triple and quadruple links. First Departure removed that very big aspect of the gameplay altogether. If I remember correctly, I think it has the Link Combo item from Star Ocean 2, but that was a completely nerfed version of the original games comboing anyway. Plus you have to waste an accessory slot on it.

I dunno how you're playing SO2, but I always found magic users to be extremely useful. In fact, besides Claude, the rest of my party was magic users.

In terms of damage vs. time, fighters easily beat mages since all damage caps at 9999. So while you're waiting for a mage to finish casting and then sitting through the magic's animation, which are ungodly long in some cases, you could have a fighter dish out many hits for 9999 a piece. That's why they fixed it in later games, so spells can exceed 9999 or deal many hits, plus the games don't pause the action and force you passively watch a clip.
But magic definitely still has its uses in SO2. Besides healing obviously, weak, quick-casting spells are great for interrupting an enemy faster than the fighters can run up to it (great strategy against enemy mages), or, for really dangerous enemies that slaughter anybody close, the mages can be used to deal the damage while a fighter acts as a decoy.
Heh, this is getting way off-topic, sorry. :P
