What games do you recommend for the system? I never grew up with sega, I was more a nintendo kid. I usually dig RPGs, platformers, and adventure games. Can anybody help me out with some suggestions?

I picked up Shining Force 3, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Daytona, Nights, Virtua Cop 2, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2 for my Saturn. I would like to get Guardian Heroes and Burning Rangers but I can't seem to get any auctions for less than $80 or 90 which I don't want to pay at this time. If you are into RPGs you also might try Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Wisdom, or Magic Knight Rayearth. If you get an Action Replay for imports you might be interested in Xmen Vs Street Fighter or Marvel VS Street Fighter. These are a few popular titles.

NIGHTS is a definite, but as far as rpgs go, i'll tell you right now which is ridiculously overrated....panzer dragoon saga....holy shit, could this game be any uglier???

not a graphics whore by any means, but 9 times out of 10, i have absolutely no idea wtf im looking at and i really havent seen anything even remotely resembling a story so far, much less one that one justifies the title of "greatest rpg of all time", not worth the inflated ebay prices imo.

wipeout is another one u might like, if youre into racing games, and of course, if u like fighters, street fighter alpha 3 (zero 3) this is like the best street fighter game in my eyes, there are lots more, but those should get u started

The Saturn has a superior version of Earthworm Jim 2 to the SNES and Genesis versions. You should also get Mega Man X4 and Mega Man 8 if you don't already have them on the Playstation. While Mega Man X4 is pretty much identical to the Playstation version, I like the the Saturn version of Mega Man 8 better due to a few extras in the game.

Shining Wisdom (action rpg)
Sonic Jam (sonic compilation)

Nobody has told the OP to just use the search function yet because there this same questions has been asked countless times?

Ok, I'll do it.

I never could get into the Saturn as much, personally. It's not a bad system, but all the games I really want are just out of my budget at this time.

Having said that, the only game I can recommend from having played it is Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. Judging from the GBA sequel, Guardian Heroes is totally worth your time, but I've never played the original. Still, it's a Treasure game; can't go wrong there.

After you search for and plow through the Saturn games threads, buy a 4-in-1 cart. Every Saturn owner needs one. It's SOP. Sorry, no exceptions! :p

Did you even play the first two Panzer games? I can't see anyone, playing and enjoying the first two games enough to buy the third, and then knocking it for its graphics.

If, by chance, you have not played the first two games, then stop playing Saga and play them first. Saga is a good stand alone title, but it's true impact came from how it tied the places, people and events of the first two games together into a living world with it's own cultures, beiefs and traditions. It constanly references the first two titles and makes for a much richer experiance if you have played them.

As for the graphics, well, it's the same trademark Panzer art design that garnered the previous games so much acclaim and it's realized in full free roaming 3d to boot. Obscure, odd or unique... yes. Ugly... hell no!

As for the story? It's one of the most unforgettable, sweeping, gutwenchingly tragic and original stories I have ever seen written for a game. If it doesn't get at least some empathetic response from you by the end of the game, then you sir, have a heart of stone.

The first disk is VERY slow... it introduces the world and it mechanics and takes it's time doing so in quite linear fashion. Once you are past the first disk it should pick up pace pretty quick.

As stated above in the thread, you can't go wrong with Astal for platforming goodness. Clockwork Knight 2 is also really good and miles better than the first CK. Mr. Bones is also an interesting platform game with it's use of FMV backgrounds, but the forced scrolling of some of the levels turned me off a bit. All three are excellent Saturn exclusives and each have different unique 2d platforming experience.

Essential and cheap:
Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2
Nights into Dreams (and perhaps Christmas Nights into Dreams)

You did not mention shooter, but I'd recommend Gallactic Attack. It's pretty cheap as well.

I hope your message in the first post doesn't mean you've never owned ANYTHING Sega before, as Saturn is kinda a lousy place to start. Great system in its own right...but when compared to the Dreamcast and Genesis, it falls a little flat. Just more good, easily available games on those two.

But...

I think the best place to start for any system is the games that EVERYONE had for it, as they're cheap and plentiful. I recommend:

Daytona USA (CCE or Regular, both are decent)
Virtua Cop 1 & 2
Nights
Virtua Fighter 1 & 2
Sega Rally Championship
Die Hard Arcade
Panzer Dragoon
...and pretty much anything else Sega made for Saturn.

These games are cheap and common. Might as well try system on the cheap rather than going for expensive obscurities first. Especially when there is so much good stuff there.

No I have a genesis also. What I meant was I never owned Sega systems when they were being first released.

Sorry, forgot about the search function. my apologies to whoever brought that up. Thanks for all the replies so far, I appreciate it! So far Astal has really piqued my interest. That may be my first purchase.

I have one other question, I know you can play imports with the pro action replay in the cartridge slot of the saturn to play PAL and NTSC J discs but is there a way to get repro type discs that are translated to english similar to what some people have done with the snes and nes? Has this also been done with the Sega CD?

Batman Forever the Arcade Game....

But seriously get Demon Castle Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight, it's Castlevania and it's great. And I do believe you can get a switch mod done to the system to get a few of the games in English, someone else will have to clarify though, I am not 100% sure since I've never had on done. Enjoy the system though it is great and full of arcade ports.

I have 6 volumes of Saturn videos on Youtube, if you want to see most of the good games. Just do a search for "155 Sega Saturn" and you should find them.

I know you said you're mostly into RPG's, but Radiant Silvergun is a truly amazing game. It's a shooter, but very fun and interesting to play, and it's not as difficult as some of the other shooters on Saturn (if you're like me and suck with quick reflexes and pattern memorization).

Panzer Dragoon Saga is amazing. Its one of those games that along with Valkyrie Profile,
Suikoden 2 were the trio of legendary rpgs most people never got a chance to play and were high on peoples want lists.

I must say Panzer Dragoon Saga not only lives up to its hype, it surpasses it in my opinion.

I waited years for Sega to do some sort of re-release, update. Nothing. But thats Sega, basically do everything except what their fanbase wants. Because that would make too much sense.

I ended up paying 100 bucks for a disk only version, and man its worth every penny I paid for it.

The story is outstanding. You may find that odd considering the characters don't speak english or any real language but it is just is done so well it draws you in. I could not tear myself away from it until it was over.

I'm not one of those who takes that much pride in having a collectors item sitting on a shelf for the sake of bragging rights.

The true value of any game for me is when the game is over, yet your memories of playing the game stay with you forever and still bring a smile to your face just reflecting on it.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is to me that kind of game.

If you think the game is ugly, well believe it or not that was on purpose. The team had a chance to put it on Playstation but the developers thought it would look to polished. They felt the Saturn gave the game the proper look they were going for.

The game has an interesting almost doomed history development. Including I believe a suicide and another death .

It was all on 1up at one point.

To me if you own a Saturn and only this game, your investment is justified just with this game alone.(Of course there are great Saturn games so no worries there)

That and the fact that Orta bombed hard. Sega seems to have slammed the door on the series after that.

I always wondered if Orta had been wildly successful if Sega would have considered a remake with Orta's graphic engine.

na, you hit the nail on the head with that, i've never played the 1st 2 panzer games, the 1st time i ever played anything panzer related was orta, which is supremely underrated and slept on, then few years later when i joined this board (under a different username) i kept seeing this game being thrown around as a final fantasy killer and greatest rpg of all time and all that

so i quickly bought it at the relatively cheap price of 125 complete....only to be hit with a dreaded "wawwtttt dawwww fawkkkkkk"

i trudged and forced my way through disc 1, i dont even remember anything that happened on disc 2 to be honest, and im somewhere in the begining of disc 3, just looking for something to motivate me to continue, i havent touched this game in monthsssssssss.

im just sitting here waiting for SOMETHING to happen...when exactly does this game take shape into the genre redefining opus its lauded to be? please someone..just give me an answer...anyone...pleaseeeeeeeeeee

I only have 5 Saturn games and they are all pretty good. Daytona USA, Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition, Virtua Fighter 2, Shining in the Holy Ark, and NiGHTS Into Dreams.

I really want to get more, the highest game on my want list for Saturn right now is Panzer Dragoon and some more Racing Games because I have my eye on the Racing Wheel.

The problem here is you are trying to force yourself to like something that you simply don't like.

If 100 people tell you such and such is great and you don't find it that great then guess who is right? You are.
In the end it has to meet your expectations not some one else's.

My best advice to you is to sell it off. You got a complete copy pretty cheap and can still profit from the experience.

Hey, at least you have given it your best shot at trying to like the game. Thats commendable.
