Not sure what to make of this, but it seems like they may be finally trying something new with the core franchise. Sure hope that's the case

There isn't anything saying that they're creating an new style of the Pokemon game. They're just making a new series of Pokemon, meaning the next generation series of Pokemon. Like Diamond and Pearl, then the final version is Platinum. They're going to their next version of Pokemon "Generic Substance" and Pokemon "Generic Substance."
So going to the next generation of the exact same game all over again. Different Pokemon in a different world that seems like you're playing the same game all over again.
Pokemon fans rejoice. You're paying MSRP for an updated version of the same game all over again.

Great ANOTHER fucking DS title!
I consider myself a fan of the Pokemon franchise and i'm sick and tired of not getting a decent console version like Pokemon Colosseum on Gamecube was (like my fav pokegame ever).
The half ass BS they brought out to the Wii shows Nintendo's lack of giving a shit not the fans. There are already enough Pokemon to catch now how about a decent console version!

BHvrd, Colosseum was your favorite Pokemon title? REALLY?
Hmmm... could be interesting. As much as I liked Diamond/Pearl, the formula is getting stale. I'd like to see some of the gameplay mechanics from the Ranger series implemented (such as using Pokemon to solve environmental puzzles), and perhaps a more action based battle system (even if it's using a timing mechanic like the Paper Mario games).

Um, yeah.
What other game had better looking arenas and graphics? None. Multiplayer with using the gameboy sp's was the best! Ever!
The storyline was more along the lines of a Sega game with the "shadow pokemon" and having to unlock their hearts I thought was cool.
Why wouldn't it be? It was more than "just capturing" and mount battle to obtain Ho-Oh was classic. Yeah I preferred it to all the other carbon copy capture / help prof. oak versions. Why is that not the popular answer? Oh well.
I will admit that you have some ideas that sound good, but i've never tried the ranger series. More action and some puzzle solving sounds good to me. I just so want a game with awesome graphics and arenas. I really like the way the effects looked on Colosseum/GoD. I have all these damn Pokemon I caught. At least I could put them on a game that really utilizies them some more. When can we stop capturing and start enjoying by (importing) what we have captured in cross titles. Btw, I still own Pokebox and it still hasn't been topped for transfering Pokemon.
Full fledged Pokemon MMORPG? I'm game! :D

I only got about halfway through Colosseum before quitting out of boredom. The battles were excruciatingly slow and the graphics and sound weren't all that great. Of course, I haven't liked anything Genius Sonority has done with the Pokemon franchise, so maybe I'm just missing something.
I did hear XD was better, but sadly I never found time to play that one.
I don't mean to put you down because you enjoyed Colosseum; but you're LITERALLY the first person I've encountered who actually liked it.

I was a bit caught off guard with this too. I love me some pokemon, but Colosseum was really boring..maybe i just didn't give it enough of a chance, i couldn't take more than the first 6 hours

I think the fact that the new arc is coming out for the DS shows that there aren't any plans for a new handheld platform from Nintendo anytime soon.
So maybe even the handhelds will remain stuck in this generation for a while as well as the consoles.

I'm surprised that more people didn't like Colosseum and XD. I thought they were the best in franchise and was hoping that Revolution was going to be like them when information was just being released about it.

Colosseum was... different from the usual Pokemon games we're used. The fact it was a 3D RPG, albeit a short one, was a plus in my book. I enjoyed it but will probably never replay it. They really need to make a full Console RPG.
As for this new one, hopefully it will be radically different (I doubt it though). D/P were fantastically stale (though they outsold G/S and R/S) and it took me ages to be bothered enough to beat the E4. I'm also guessing it will be a DSi game.

The gamecube ones are pretty good, the slowness of battles is the main problem with them. That's one of the things that sadly just seems to come with fancy 3D graphics though, if it's high poly, it must be nicely animated! and therefore no skipping animation! blah.

The only real problem I had with collesium was the battles were painfully slow, but overall it was a good game (still need to pick up the second one at some point)

I understand the expectation for a new generation like we've seen before, but I'm also interested in seeing a console ORPG this time around. Not an MMO, but something like PSO or a dungeon crawler with the Pokemon raising premise.
My biggest complaint, however, is that they keep focusing on children. I think it's time for a more mature monster raising game, given that the original fans have grown older. The basic structure is still solid, but it needs a serious revamp in terms of presentation, art style, and writing. There's too many Pokemon in the current universe, but an alternate universe with fewer, possibly cross-breeding species would be interesting. Put the emphasis on training one or two monsters, not catching 500. Even if there's only 10 creatures, that's 10^10 potential combinations in 1/50 the space.
But I know that they have no desire to evolve the series. In fact, a page I was reading today speculated that they might simplify it even more.

Colosseum was a good game. I'm not sure I would say it's my favorite, but I will say that in some ways I found it most compelling. The thing is that the Colosseum games are really much more like a creative interpretation of the Pokemon franchise instead of a "remake" or "remastered."
All the handheld RPGs are like the same old song, just a different version: live version, remastered, remixed, etc. But the same song by the same band; variations on a theme.
The Colosseum games were a cover done by a different band - and this band did some really interesting things with the song. No wild Pokemon, for one - only trainer battles. The only guys you can "get" are the guys you can snag. Just snagging - being able to steal another trainer's guys - that's a pretty neat thing in itself (who hasn't wanted to do that with some of the trainers in the regular RPGs?).
And the most compelling aspect of it all is the difficulty level. Without being able to catch any and every guy you meet, the game is much more challenging. I'll say that the final colosseum - which is like an Elite Four battle - was one of my favorite gaming moments in the last decade. No healing between battles, some extremely challenging foes, and the further twist that several of them had some shadow Pokemon that you had to catch, not just kill - that made it a lot harder. Doing all that with the not-so-great guys they stick you with for the campaign, and you really have to get somewhat creative - it improves your game. And the Tyranitar at the end really gives you a good reason to use a master ball in the main game - there won't be any other challenging / legendary guys, and you're probably too hurt to survive too many hits.
Not to mention that Mt. Battle is one of the absolute best places to gain XP in the entire series - import your guys, blast through it, and level up. You can get guys from 5 to 50 in 4 or so passes through Area 10, and get some decent coupons to boot (allowing purchase of items like scope lens, choice band, rare berries, and other powerful aids which aren't available in the main game).
Maybe it's not for everyone, but I found it pretty good. I liked it. I'm still pecking away at XD now and again, but I haven't finished it. Trying to breed guys for the Battle Frontier in Emerald.
And back on topic...what's this about a reboot of the franchise? I see no evidence that they're "rebooting" or anything like that. Just another game continuing the series; it's not like they're going back to the original 150 or something.

From the joystiq article: Nintendo's announcement said there'd be new Pokémon and that "everything is planned to be born anew,"
it just seems like it will be more than just another game with the same formula and different map

That would be cool to get something fresh out of the franchise. Its still good, just becoming stale.
