hi everyone,

i have a large rpg collection that i've collected throughout my life that i may need to sell in the next few weeks. i was laid off from my job and my dog now needs an operation (it's not a life-threatening at the moment, otherwise i wouldn't be dragging my feet at all, but it may become life-threatening in the future unless i act soon), so unless someone actually gives me a call on some of the applications i've put out, i may need to sell some stuff, and really, this is the only thing of value i have.

my collection is multi-platform. i have a few complete items (indicated on list), but nothing is sealed. everything is in working condition, most of it appears used but not overtly so (hey, i played all these games!). i also have a few reproductions, which are also indicated.

here's what i have:

NES:
- Faxanadu
- Crystalis (complete)

GC: (no player's choice, all complete)
Harvest Moon: Magical Melody
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Tales of Symphonia
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

as stated above, i'm really not ready to sell yet. i'm still waiting and hoping on a few jobs. if i did have to sell, it'd ideally sell it as a lot. i know this may be challenging due to the fact that it's multi-platform, but unless i can tell the vet that i'm employed (and therefore able to pay in installments), i'm really just going to need a large chuck on change quickly.

could any experts give me ideas on what a collection like this is worth? thanks.

I don't know how much you need or if you actually want to part with these games, but given the amount of games and the high value of some of them, I think it would be a very bad idea to sell it as a lot. But if you pick out a few choice games, you could make several hundred dollars while still keeping the majority of your collection. Between Dragon Warrior IV, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Tactics Ogre, and Suikoden II alone you're already looking at lot of money, and then there are plenty more games that would sell in the 30-50 range.

Regardless of what you choose to do, I hope your dog makes a swift recovery, and good luck finding employment.

It's too big really to give a guesstimate. You shouldn't sell it in a lot anyway, as has been said. If you decide you want to sell tho, let me know what you want for some of those repros. :D

Your biggest money makers are going to be Earthbound (this is the US version, right?) which should get as high as $250 if you're lucky, CT, Ogre Battle & 64, Harvest Moon & N64 & PS1, SM RPG, Xenogears, Tactics Ogre, and the two PS1 Suikodens.

Wow, Xenogears has gone up a lot since the last time I looked. I thought the rerelease killed the market on that one, for GH and black label alike. I wonder if black label Final Fantasy Tactics will ever make a similar recovery (although with the PSP version available as well, it seems less likely).

I've sold the Black Label FFT for close to $40 last year on Amazon. Just depends on competition imo (on there at least).

if i still don't have a job by the week after next, i will very quickly need a few thousand dollars, so while i don't really want to part with my games, i may have too.

i know that i could get a couple hundred bucks for earthbound (yes, it's the US version) and that along with mario rpg, tactics ogre, chrono trigger, dragon warrior, etc, i might be able to come up with a few more hundred dollars, but it's still not enough, thus the reason i was talking about wanting to sell as a lot.

what if it sold them by individual system? so i'd have an nes lot, an snes lot, a psx lot, etc? does anyone think that might work better? any idea what each lot might reasonably go for?

thanks for all your help and advice so far. i do appreciate it.

You'll definitely get more money selling as system lots rather than as one giant lot. But even then I would still recommend selling the most valuable games separately. If you sold all of those SNES games together, for example, most buyers would be going into it aiming to get Earthbound and Chrono Trigger and such for a steal compared to what they'd pay if they bought them individually. Lots perform best as a way to sell lower value items that would have a hard time selling on their own or wouldn't pull in much.

okay, so without the big titles, what could i approximately expect to get on each lot? if i'm ebay-ing them, i'd set reserve prices. what do you think it reasonable?

RPGs almost always go up in value over time so those are really games you should be trying to sell individually.

First off, I wouldn't set reserve prices. Just start them up in the middle of what you expect to get. Reserve prices keep people from bidding half the time. Also I wouldn't try to sell any repros on there at first. After you sell this stuff, you can try them one at a time if you want, or just sell them on here. NES games should be $15~20, SNES ones $40~100 (unless you're giving me a good deal, then please, much cheaper than that. :D)

Here's what I'd do:

NES:
DW I, II, III & IV together - $150+?
Ultima III, IV & V together - $30+
Final Fantasy - $40
The rest (including extra DW II but minus the repros) - $50 or so?

SNES:
FF: MQ, II, III - $50+
Earthbound - $200+
Harvest Moon - $50
Breath of Fire I & II - $40+
Lufia I & II - $60+
Chrono Trigger - $100
SM RPG - $70?
Ogre Battle - $60?
SoM, IoG, Soul Blazer - $50+

You see where I'm going with this? Make small groups of like games together unless they're very expensive. Put cheaper titles together to get more in one go. Also, I'm just guessing at prices and too lazy to look them up, but I think in general they should be correct.

Also I'd put FF7,8,9 & Tactics together, and then Origins, Chronicles & Anthology together. In fact, I HAVE done this.

Guesstimates. I double check some of the prices based on recent ebay completed auctions, I had no idea how high some of these PSX games had risen.

I didn't rate the reproductions as they're worth whatever it costs to have one built.

If you decide to split up the lot I may be interested in some of your reproductions and the Final Fantasy NES depending on their quality and condition.

Daria is pretty close on most of her estimates...about the only ones I'd say differently on are these:

NES:

Final Fantasy CIB - $35
Dragon Warrior IV CIB - $70

SNES:

Ogre Battle - $35

PS1:

FF Tactics - $25

PS2:

Romancing SaGa - $7
Wild Arms 3 - $5
Xenosaga - $5

On those SNES repros...PM forthcoming...I want many of those.

Wow, since when did Earthbound get so expensive? I remember seeing it used but complete 4-5 years for $40-50. Man... was I dumb not to buy that. :( I just checked ebay and the BOXES are going for $100. Holy crap!

if you're dead set on selling it in lots, then yea, i'd guess breaking into system specific lots would be the best way to go as selling it in one giant lot would probably alienate the majority of potential buyers, not everyone has the disposable income or interest in every single game in such a massive lot.

i still think selling the games individually would be the way to go because u maximize your chances of making money and cut down on the wait period on returns, but still, good luck
