View Full Version : Problems with a Model 1 Genesis.

Earlier today I bought a Genesis Model 1 for $10 from Value Village. It came with two controllers, (one of which is a 6-button arcade stick) and a generic Netgear AC adapter that fits the port in the back.

However, the system is missing the RF adapter as well as the cover for the Sega CD insert slot. It's also got a good amount of dust in most of the grooves. I tried to get it to power on but the red light doesn't power on.

I'm not quite sure what to do now. If I can get it fixed I'll be able to sell it since I have a working one at home in Anchorage, but If I can't I'm considering either donating it or selling it cheap to someone who can use it for parts.

I'm thinking of taking it to my local Play 'n Trade to see if they can fix it, but before I do is there anyone here who might be able to help me out with this issue? :help:

Open the Genesis and turn it on. Does it works?

If so then the problem is in the shell. Genesis 1s sometimes have broken power "switches":

If the shell's power "switch" is broken like that it won't activate the actual switch underneath. A lot of Genesis 1s that I come across with have this issue.

Just use some epoxic glue (Super Glue, Krazy, etc) to glue it in place:

Other things to try:
1. Use another AC adaper
2. Check the fuses and regulators

This is where you need to buy a cheap multimeter. Harbor Freight has them for less than $10.

With it, you could tell if your AC adapter is even working.

Could be a cracked solder joint where the adapter plugs into the back of the system, I have a Model 1 system like that. Check if it gets power when putting slight pressure on the cord where it plugs into the system, pull on it slightly up when the power switch is turned on.

EDIT: Wait, I just noticed that you said it comes with a generic AC adapter. The Genesis Model 1 uses DC current so that would be a problem. I hope you didn't damage it already.

I checked it and it's an AC-DC so I'm assuming it should run off of that. I need to buy a screwdriver before I can open it up though.

Should've asked to test it out before I bought it. Probably why it was marked so low to begin with. At least I got some good controllers out of it and I'll bet the arcade stick is worth seperate about what I paid for the bundle.

Speaking of which, is the stick supposed to come with two rubber feet or four? Mine only has two.

Thanks for the info guys. :)

I guess they should be four. You can always buy some 3M branded ones at Home Depot, that's what I do.
