According to the TNL forum PBA Bowling for the Dreamcast was leaked out recently. Has anyone obtained a copy of the game or does anyone know where I can find it? I would love to add it to my collection.

Definately not. I just saw this topic. I was one of the few eagerly looking forward to this game. Their Ten Pin Alley for the Saturn is one of my all time favorite games. I was bummed when this was cancelled for release.

I'd be interested in this title too if it's found. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Yeah, I'm into the bowling games too. I was looking forward to this game more than any of the others that got canned. Figured it'd turn up eventually.

I am also interested in this bowling game. I, frankly, am interested in any unrealeased DC game. By the way, has anyone happened across Propellar Arena yet?

I would not expect Propeller Arena to be released anytime soon. I would think that some folks on this board would have PBA Bowling by now?

I am expecting to receive a copy of PBA Bowling 2001 for the dreamcast from a source later this week (Thurs-Fri) , I also have made contact with another user on this board who has a copy if my first source does not come through. I will post a full review after I play it. In addtion I pulled out my June2001 Game Informer Magazine that contains a review as well. They gave the game 6.5. Last thing to note is the PBA Bowling 2001 was developed by Bethesda.
Look for more info later this week

Hope it's enjoyable and worth it then! Any word on how the game uses the VMU or if it'll eat up a massive amount of space like with Half-Life?

I finally tracked down a working copy of PBA Bowling 2001. I was away for a few days and got in late last night. I only had time to bowl a few quick frames. So far I stink. I threw a bunch of gutterballs. The game has some wacky meter for bowling , similiar to a golf meter but instead of two quick presses of the A button it requires 3. I will play around more tonight. The game music is pretty jazzy. The graphics are average. Being a fan of bowling, I think it is a nice addition to the DC. I will put more time into it tonight and hopefully get a better hang of the meter.
As for the VMU I believe it takes 19 blocks. Probably more if you create your own bowler instead of using one of the Pros that are already in the game.

its actually been available (thus the title of this thread ..leaked to the public for several weeks. It is in the hands of many people by now. I am not sure how my brother tracked down a copy. But I have been told it is available on binary newsgroups. I could not pull it down myself because my ISP charges extra to pull down large files from the Newsgroups.

I just got mine yesterday from the newsgroup alt.binaries.dreamcast. It's in .cdi format, I converted it to NERO using cdi2nero.exe and burned the NERO image, everything worked out fine.
The game is really quite good, excellent pin physics. I haven't quite figured out how the three gauges work but I'm working on it!

lol, I've played about ten games on it and I have a system where I can direct the ball sort of down the middle or down the sides, but I have no real idea what I'm doing or what the swing meters do.
If you find out let us know :D

If it is anything like the PBA games they released for the PC, here's how the guages work (if I am remembering it correctly, it's been a while).
First the guage swings up to the left, that is power...the line at the top of the guage is a "breaking point" go past it, you'll get more power, but if your accuracy is off, you'll toss it in the gutter.
Then it comes down, and you try to hit the center mark at the bottom of the dial, that is "release point" basically if you let it go early or late, you won't throw it on line.
The third button press is how much hook you throw the ball with...if you hit it too early, the ball rolls to the right (a backup up ball), hit it right on the mark, you throw it dead straight...anything to the left is a hook. The farther away from the center line, the more hook you throw it with.
Again, this is based on the PC version, if the DC version is different, I'm sorry.
And if there is anyone willing to help me out finding a copy, please let me know...I can't realistically download it as I am on a 56k connection. I'm gathering it's a pretty large file.

Hmmm. That may very well be the sequence, but the execution is different. This game has a round "dial" type meter. The first swings clockwise, then counter-clockwise, then clockwise again. I'm usually pretty good at figuring these things out but this one is weird - the gauges don't have any clear "sweet spot". But I'll try playing with your sequence to see if at least that applies.

From what I've read, one is the power meter, one is the release and the other is the amount of spin. You could always try emailing or calling someone at Bethesda for an answer, if they're still in business.

I just didn't explain it clearly in my post before...
First clockwise swing = power. 12 o'colck is deemed 100% power (there should be some kind of mark...perhaps it hadn't been programmed in yet)
Counter-Clockwise = Accuracy (there should be a red line near 6'o clock on the "dial" that corresponds with "perfect" accuracy)
Second clockwise = amount of hook. Again, in relation to the 6'o clock area...if you hit the button before you get to 6, it goes right...dead on, straight, and to the left it will hook.
Like I said, my recollection is based on the PC version, and I haven't played it in a couple of months...I'll play it tonight and give you clearer instructions should my recollections be wrong.
Hope that helps out a bit.

Is anybody able to host the file, so the rest of us can get a copy? I tried to pull it from alt.binaries.dreamcast, but wasn't successful. All the reviews has got me real anxious to try it.

OK, my memory was a touch hazy...there isn't a specific "sweet spot mark."
On the PC version, the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock marks are shaded in a little more than the rest of the dial.
So just remember, for power, 12 o'clock is 100% power, any more than that, and you risk bad accuracy...I generally use a little less than 100% power.
The second click is accuracy, you want it as close to the 6 o'clock mark as possible.
Third click is hook...if you push the button to the right of that mark, the ball will roll right, right on for straight, and to the left for a hook.
As an example for the hook, if you wait until the pointer swings over to the 7 o'clock area before hitting the button the third time, it will have a medium hook...8 o'clock is a major hook...
That should be it.
If you need more help, send me a copy of the game... :D
So, what kind of scores are you guys hitting on the DC version???

Thanks, I'm gonna go try it now.
Scooter, e-mail me your address again so you can do further research into the complex controls :)

Spot on, Scooter!
First meter, power. Just like any decent golf game :)
Second meter, accuracy - which didn't make sense until I realized that I could move the pointer by holding down the B button before throwing the ball.
Third meter, hook severity. Until you get the timing down, you probably want to tap the button quickly (the second and third button presses very close together).
Now I can enoy the game, thank you!

Hello all, I have been trying for a while to find this and my attempts at P2P and newgroups are not working. I think I missed out by a few months. Would anyone be so kind as to burn a copy of this for me? I will gladly PayPal any expense incurred. From what I have heard, this game is a blast. I love bowling and would definately love to play it on my beloved Dreamcast. Please PM me and thanks for your time and consideration.
Cheers all.

Just finally grabbed a copy of this and dug around and found this topic, mainly because I was confused on the swing meter myself. Thanks DP, I had a feeling it was like the swing meters from playing Links 386.
I am starting to like it, jazzy music and nice graphics though the bowlers seem a bit stiff, hate that it takes up almost 100 pages on a VMU, so maybe vmu compression was something not implimented at the time of cancellation like with Half-Life.
Has anyone played around with the create-a-bowler or create-a-bowl options yet?

Yeah DC Revival!
I got this game last year at some point (I think that someone here on DP hooked me up) - I didnt know that it could play online though - can it really? Is someone running a central server or something? I didnt really enjoy the game very much, I didnt like the meter and all that - I got Propeller Arena at the same time and it beats PBA hands down, of course its an entirely different game.
You DC fans should look up Trizeal, that's the newest DC shmup, it came out earlier this year (2005).
