I agree that he's walking funny, but I want to play! But... I'm getting tired of download only games, Sega, I'll pay $10 more for a disc! Honest! Anyways, I'm also excited about the new Rocket Knight remake, I hope it's good.

How many soul crushing, forum flaming, ball smashing times will it take before people stop getting their hopes up for Sonic games?
If it's any good at all, wonderful. Until it's quality has been universally decreed by decent, good-hearted men who don't write slash fiction or wear fur suits, I'm more than skeptical: I'm downright cynical.

Same here.
Also, seeing "Sonic 4" immediately brings this to mind:

It seems that Sega is giving fans what they want, but they are acting quite cautious.
I bet they are afraid that after years of fan complaints about bringing Sonic back into 2D that no one is going to buy this.
If Sega was confident that this was going to sell well, I'm sure there would have been a disk release.
Its just odd that Sonic may be the only thing keeping Sega above water, (I know they are not great games, but I believe they sell well regardless.) yet his return to glory is only a download.
They are not quite ready to trust their fanbase.
Thus the downloadable/dlc approach.
Hopefully if it is a good/great product and is well supported by fans, Sega might be more willing to listen to its fans in the future and turn itself into a great company once again.

Did anybody notice that things went bad when Sonic's hair got longer, his eyes turned green, and everything about his attitude changed?
I'm excited about this game, but I'd be a lot more excited if they went back to his original design, brought back the characters from the Dic TV show (Sally, rotor, etc), Jaleel White became Sonic again, and they made him COOL!
Come on Sega, I'm tired of this green-eyed impostor!

I'm all about this. The handheld 2d Sonic games have been pretty awesome, so as long as they can bring that quality to this, it should be alright. Hell, they've already said no Sonic friends are in the game, so that's a huge bonus.
It's hard to screw up a 2d Sonic game. Can he run fast? Well, there you are.

You're right on this. People say that all newer Sonic games fail, but nobody gives the Sonic Advance or Rush games any credit. There is Sonic Rivals, however.

Yes, there is a dedicated fan base that will buy it regardless. Knowing that Sega churns out some of my favorite games i'm somewhat in that camp myself, but not so diehard that I buy every new release.
Phantasy Star Online/Universe/Portable/0 is one title that has helped kept them afloat. Extremely popular in Japan and subscriptions for Universe haven't been as bad as many think. With Portable 2 and PSO anniversary announcement around the corner it's only getting better for the franchise which shows the popularity. It's not the only popular Sega franchise though, but one (my main one though).
I'll be buying this for sure as well as Afterburner Climax, Bayonetta (when it hits $29.99), Aliens vs. Predator (maybe at release), Yakuza 3 (when it hits $39.99) and try to support some of their other games ($19.99 pricepoint preffered) as I know Sega has some franchises I ADORE. Phantasy Star being the number one and seeing the treatment it's getting lately, me=happy and <3'ing Sega.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Sega has made it clear in the past that part of the reason Sonic games get saddled with the sidekick nonsense that people don't like is for practical reasons. At "AAA game" production levels, Sonic levels are too time-consuming to make and create a game with the amount of content people expect from "AAA games;" to get that amount of content, they need padding. Going the download route is a way for Sega to break out of that mold, and make a shorter pure Sonic game without being saddled with those expectations.

I have to admit, I applaud Sega for continuing the original 16-bit Sonic line. As with Bionic Commando and Mega Man, I love how the classics are being continued. I mean, never in a million years did I think they would go back and make sequels to NES or Genesis games, in those formats, 20 years later.

I'm glad that their continuing the series the way it was meant to be and I'm also exceited that many of the new characters will be thrown into the trash. "Too many cooks spoil the broth." comes tom mind in times like these. I can't wait for Sonic 4... but I want it in CD format, not as a downloadable.

Well, I did wear a full body Sonic suit for Halloween.
Biased about this yes. Do I own a 4ft Sonic statue and own all of the new Sonic games? Yes I do.
Holy crap balls. I need to change my pants. If the side scrolling is anything, ANYTHING like the daytime levels on Sonic Unleashed, than I will be flabbergasted.
I have not just stuck by Sonic, but defended his most hated games (do a search on the forums to vouch for that).
This is my MegaMan 9. The people that were just speechless about MM9, that is how I feel about Sonic 4.
This is the type of game I will purposefully take a couple days off of work to play. Damn, I am so excited right now.
If you guys don't buy it, well, your choice, but I am buying the crap out of this on day 1.
EDIT: Rick: The one thing that really annoyed the crap out of me on Sonic 2 on Game Gear was that the end boss levels gave you no rings. If I remember correctly, in Sonic 2 on Genny, the only time that happened was the very end boss.

Sonic 2 on the Game Gear. Too difficult for its own good and controlling the hang glider is a pain in the ass.
(Btw, the last two Sonic platformers on the Game Gear - Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble - are two of the best games on the system imo).
Looks great, but I'm boycotting this and Afterburner Climax. No more downloadable-only games. I'd rather pay $50 than $15, just give me a psychical copy.

This is pretty cool news !:rocker::rocker: I remember thinking why the hell dont they do this with sonic While I was playing new super mario bros. I hope It's not just a remake of sonic one but more of a mash up of the first three sonics.
The only thing that worries and pisses me off is that it's a download. I really hate that. I want to own a physical copy not a file that will be lost if something happens to my wii. :bad-words:

I think Sega is really afraid to not release it on disc. Which scares me to think they possibly aren't confident enough in their own product. By making it download and episodes they can release parts of the game at any time and if it bombs they can just stop making them. Where as if they do what Nintendo did they have to jump in the pool, not take it step by step.
I bet if the game does well and gets good reviews they will eventually release all episodes and probably a bonus episode on a single disc.

It's a 50-50 call. Perhaps you're right, or perhaps companies will see the boycott and no longer produce downloadables.
buzz_n64
02-05-2010, 10:24 PM
Yeah, if you boycott, you're probably sending them the wrong message, meaning that you simply don't want the game. They don't know the reasoning behind you not buying the download. I still want Super Street Fight II HD Remix on disc, but it's not going to happen since it's doing just fine as a download. Lose-lose situation.

I actually have a video game book that has a misprint. It has a full page of screen shots from different games(separate pages for each system), and it lists all the Genesis Sonic games including "Sonic the Hedgehog 4". I have to dig it out to remember the name of the book, but I found that weird when I first read it. At the time I wondered if there was a game that never made it out of Japan. LOL

Is it HIGH SCORE! The Illustrated History of Electronic Games?? Because, in there, page 250 will show it. It's the proto-type of Sonic Crackers which later became Knuckles Chaotix.
Knowing if half the battle, the other half is don't ask, don't tell.

Yeah I think that's the book. I don't really understand why they would put screenshots of a prototype game along with the rest of the released games with no explanation about it, and choosing to rename it too. This topic just reminded me about that.

I like the looks of the layout in the trailer, as long as there was no bottomless pit under that spiral bridge Sonic ran over. That would mean OMG alternate paths!
I hope this is better than the fangames I've seen. some of those have good intentions but they layouts are not always that great. Best I've seen were some Genesis hacks from Sonic Retro members.

It's going to suck if it's anything like Sonic Rush. I've lost all hope for this series- which sucks even worse considering this was my favorite franchise as a kid.
