This week, we go to a classic side-scrolling beat 'em up, with a role-playing twist. I spent a lot of money on this game during college, because I took the bowling class a few times, and the alley had this game.

Excellent choice. The two D&D games Capcom got the license for on CPS2 are some of my favorite beat em ups. I was actually looking into the Saturn collection pack of both games last night, sad to say Japanese language only (even with ISO region patches to change US or Euro region codes) and the physical copies are highly overpriced. Home console owners are kinda SOL on this one. But this is the Mame club, so enough about that.

I fired it up this morning and played it for a while to get re-acquainted. The story element and branching paths are great, and if you can drag 4 people away from the tabletop game you have about an hour of immense fun. The 4 different character classes are unique enough to each stand on their own merits, and the gameplay is of a fairly evolved nature for a beat em up. (items, loot, extra/special attacks, and team attacks)

Anybody on the west coast want to kaillera this one? Dibs on the elf!

Really, nobody? The Capcom D&D games are great beat em ups guys.

For tossing into the rotation: Dynamite Duke

I haven't had the chance to really give it a fair go yet. I do really enjoy the game though, and I'm looking forward to getting maimed by it again very soon.

So I downloaded and played through this one this morning. I used the fighter class for the duration of the game. I have never played or seen the Arcade D&D games before so this was an entirely new experience.

I also thought is was cool, Arasoi, that you could choose your path. Does that mean you have to play through several times to see all the levels? That would give it a good replay value. I loved that the enemies would continually drop treasure for you to collect as it gave it just a tinge of RPG feel.

The hardest boss for me was the Dark Elf. It would be impossible to beat him playing by yourself, without eating through a shitload of credits. As far as the end boss goes, he was also kind of difficult but he was easier to hit than the lightning fast Dark Elf. The Beholder was really tough as well, especially the attack where he turns you to stone.

I liked this one, so I'll probably download the other D&D title to see which I like better. I've also noticed that posting is a bit sparse lately.

Shadow over Mystara is IMO the superior of the two, they ramped it up and put in more content, so it's definitely worth picking up and playing. I've been after a phoenixed CPS2 boardset of that for a while.

The Rom isn't there, but if you were to google the title "D&D Tower of Doom" and the word "ROM" it should be easy to find. That's what I did anyway.

I can't seem to find many working roms anymore. I recently installed MAMEUI32 0.136u2 and for some reason MOST of the roms I download don't work. I wonder if it is due to the version of Mame I am using.

Sorry, that's completely my fault. I forgot to send the ROM to Flack. I'll do that now, so you can get the game. And I'll leave this one up for an extra week so that more people will see it.

I found that some ROMs didn't show in the ROM list in the latest version, so I had to downgrade. I found that I really like .112. So yes, you're not the only one who had the problem.

OK, so I spent an hour or so playing this game today.

The first thing that came to mind is how similar this game is to Golden Axe or maybe more specifically like Golden Axe: The Revenge Of Death Adder. I would almost call it a rip off, but I guess everything back then (and now) rips everything else off. I also note that it was a different manufacturer (Capcom versus Sega).

Anyway, a decent game. Good graphics and I love the D&D theme of course. The black dragon boss in the swamp was really cool. There could have been more attack options, but the magic spells and throwing options made up for it.

Control felt a bit shaky. Had trouble pulling off the slide move whenever I wanted.

Good cut screens.

And who knew that you had to burn a troll to kill it? :)

Do you know where I can get a copy of version .112?

First Try Here. There are a lot of versions. Again .112 works best for the ROMs I use, but you may find something wors better for you.

Here is another site, just in case the other one has a dead link or two.

Awesome. I was actually playing this one a week or 2 ago. The D&D beat em ups are super fun.
