For those of you familiar with Binary Newsgroups. I have a question. I am actually trying to pull down the PBA Bowling 2001 for the Dreamcast , someone pointed me to a binary newsgroup. I don't see it there, but i see other files broken up into multiple parts
If I click any of them (using Outlook Express 6.0) I see text data :

=ybegin part=14 line=128 size=20000766 name=Bangai o U.S.part05.rar
=ypart begin=8320001 end=8960000
?L>v|ة,*{>Zf*v^4տzws'GIFCz>m-e?"2'8qO-?EAdstm=nn3?wT~=J=MMcaf0(?0tQ G>7[=@
rHG'O<sLk&i^'"v?[nm[HkE2y2N =My'adPo-d~".I6"C3bsL{"<<,"7sĦzͺICy=IO

How do I pull down the file instead of seeing this data. Is there a setting in outlook or something that is not setup correctly?

Hopefully someone knows what I am talking about
thanks
Dustin

Sorry Dustin, I don't use Outlook as my newsreader, I use Forte Agent, an excellent piece of software btw.

There should be an option though to save binary attachment, something to that effect, at any rate, you must save the file locally.

That file is in .rar format, which means it is an archive.

Once you save all the parts, you use a program like Winrar to combine the pieces and then end up with your .bin or .iso file.

you can't use outlook for binary newsgroups. Posters are using yenc and other encoding techinques that outlook doesn't support. You need to use another newsreader like Xnews or Forte Agent, both have free versions.

OK I downloaded Free Agent. I am checking the alt.binaries.cd.imagie.dreamcast group for the file(s) for PBA Bowling 2001 but I am not finding them there. The posts go back to 6/9 so I guess I need to look elsewhere or wait for a repost.

I am getting closer ;)

Personally.. I've tried almost every binary newsgroup reader there is out there (and have used Agent for a loong period of time).. However these days, I recommend GRABIT. It's free too. And it's basically idiot proof (a bonus). It rocks imho. Try them all out.. but give grabit a try

I also used Newsbin for a long period of time.. I like Grabit now though :) Try it out for a test period! :)

Are there no freeware standalone decoding programs anymore? (I remember using those back in the BBS days. Always an intriguing challenge.)

Guess I don't understand what you mean.. Grabit (and some other ng readers) are freeware :) :?

I mean a program which simply decodes individual postings saved to text files (or strung together into a single text file) and doesn't bother dealing with Usenet.
