Say I buy a 360 at a pawn shop. How can I tell if it is a banned 360? Can I plug my personal HDD into it and try to log on? I won't run the risk of my account getting banned, will I?

Create a silver account on the console and try to sign into Live and download a demo, no risk.

Can I do all that without an HDD, or will I still need to plug mine in? I am just wondering if the ban goes through your hard drive as well.

It'll toast the saved games on your HD for all your profiles, yes... Use a memory card, safest.

Yeah, that was going to be my suggestion. Get a memory card, put a profile on it, try to go online.
