View Full Version : Good retro review sources?

Like many of us, sometimes my memory gets a little hazy when I think back to gaming's glory days: what games were good? which ones could I be overlooking? and in this impatient modern era I can't be expected to READ, I need a quick, snappy video to sate my retro gaming desires.

That being said, I was wondering if any of you had suggestions as to some good retro game "reviewers" who don't fall into the category of 12-16 year old kids ripping off the Angry Video game Nerd (who is good, but the swearing and attempted comedy isn't really my thing).

I thoroughly enjoy semi-serious offerings such as Games Yanks Can't Wake, Classic Gameroom, Retronauts video blog, and a fellow forum-dweller's very own "Retro Resurrection". Does anyone know of other video review series in the vein of these?

Recently I've been indulging in Video Game Vault by Screw Attack. I really enjoy them, especially being very quick (usually under 2 minutes) and thoughtful with a simple "I like it" or "it sucks" at the end.

Of course there's always my own for mostly PC-centered reviews (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=phreakindee)

Are you strictly relegating this to video reviews? If so, about the best I could do is point you to Google and the Videos tab. It's hard enough to find reviews for a lot of older games, nevertheless video reviews, so a good ol' compendium of videos might lead to quicker results. Unless you don't know what you're looking for, of course, in which case I only know of a few Youtube reviewers.

If you're ok with the ol' fashioned ASCII reviews, some sites like The Video Game Critic and defunct games come to mind. Especially because I tend to look for games on more obscure systems, which they often cover. Even more generally... gah, there's a ton of them. I'm not the one to narrow 'em down.

Reading that made me a sad panda.

And I was all set to recommend HonestGamers.

And I was going to recommend The Video Game Critic (http://www.videogamecritic.net/), whose short reviews (one-paragraph long) of games old and new are quick bites for those who don't want to read deep analyses...

I like his format, but sometimes I've a felling he barely played the game. Like he's blaming Section Z for not having some sort of life bar.

I second ScrewAttack's Video Game Vault. If you need an actual score, then I recommend looking at Nintendo Life's Virtual Console reviews.

classic game room is my favorite

i sometimes like screwattacks video game vault, but why do they include an atari logo in one of their intros if they refuse to review anything pre-nes?

Well having the Atari logo on there makes sense, Atari did have the Jaguar still.
