I was just wondering if there would be a Swap Meet at CGE 2010? I enjoyed the ones in the past, and I do know that this is also a controversial topic. Due to vendors feeling like they had a raw deal with having to pay more for space.

I don't want to rehash the debate. I just want to know if a decision has been made so I can bring some of my stuff to sell. If this has been already discussed, I am sorry, and please lock this thread.

cge website

"Participate in the "Swap Meet", where we will have a dedicated room for collectors and retro gamers to get together for some wheelin' and dealin'! The Swap Meet Room opens an hour after the show opens and closes an hour before the show closes. Rent a table for $5 per hour, all proceeds go to our sponsor, Special Olympics."

Actually I've amended that page on the site. I'm not certain that Special Olympics is our charity of choice this year, and though we DO have a "swap meet room" we haven't discussed the details of it yet. Truth is, it was SO abused in 2007 that we had vendors complaining about it. It's been a fun addition to the show but we have to be sure as organizers that our vendors get the best deal and that any such addition is properly "policed".

Bottom line: details to be announced.

I think what went wrong was that people in the swamp meet area were selling items bellow the price of the people in the vendor room and it took some business away from the vendors

Maybe limiting the hours of operation, or allowing it only on one day would help.

It was cheaper to rent a table in the swap meet room all day long for both days than it was to get a table/booth in the main room. I think the swap meet room is awesome it just needs to be regulated a little more.

The only way to regulate it is limit the MAXIMUM amount of time one person can be in the swap room is 2 hours and that's it. $5 or $10 an hour 2 hours maximum.

I really don't think complaining about people selling things in the swap room "cheaper" than the show is valid. If someone wants to dump their stuff cheap, that's their prerogative. No one else's. What do you think the whole point of a SWAP MEET is?

Some people only come with a few items anyway for a table, so keeping it cheap would probably be a good idea....

Agreed 100%. The problem wasn't the prices, it was the length of time sellers "camped" there. This is what we've been thinking a well - 2 hours tops.

I think two hours sounds good. It's long enough for anyone to have a good amount of time to get a transaction going, but short enough to prevent it from being a "business venture".

That sounds perfect. When I rented a table in 07 I all that I wanted to sell sold in less than 30 minutes. Then I bought a few things from my fellow sellers, and the rest of my money was spent in the dealers room.

Bringing stuff to sell is a great way for me to make sure everything I don't want gets a good home, and it also helps offset my spending while at CGE.

Glad you guys are doing this. I actually sold in 2007 for 2 hours in the swap meet room, and then left. I was really disappointed when I went back to the swap meet room, and the same sellers were still there for the entire day. Not only does this help out the full day vendors, but it also helps out the buyers. See if every couple of hours there is someone new there that means there are new items as well to browse from, meaning more things to choose from. Which is always a good thing for a buyer.

Any updates on the swap meet room rules and pricing?
I was thinking about bringing some extra stuff to sell...
