Hello, as was shopping around for N64 games,(picked up 1080 Snowboarding and Glover, $5 for both) I saw a dreamcast, for $15, so I purchased it, and 2 games, and I was wondering if the Virtual Memory Unit is a necessity if I want to save my game.
Thanks

No, you could purchase a memory unit without a screen, but you won't be able to play mini games, or see the game's logo on your contoller. If you're into sports titles, definatly get it. Basically, you do need something to save your games.

I hope you mean Controller Pak or else I'll laugh my ass off.
But, yeah, you'll need it.

I didn't get your point. He's talking about the Dreamcast, not about the N64 games, right?

Well thats a yes and a no. Yes you do need something to save your games. No it doesnt have to be a vmu, but yes it does if you want to play the vmu mini games. Or have the playbook of NFL 2ks on you contol. So i would say yes.

My guess is he read the subject and then the first five words of the first post, then commented.

You need at least a memory card in order to save games, but you should probably have at least one real VMU. I've had some games that didn't play nice with third-party memory cards (fails to save entirely, or claims it saved, then file just magically disappears.. that kind of stuff), but everything works with a VMU.
Plus, they're generally cheap and plentiful. If you plan to get a lot of mileage out of your Dreamcast, you should probably get a few, as 200 blocks doesn't get you very far.

Yeah, DC memory cards don't hold much, so most people will need at least several, maybe more... it's like the PSX and anyone with a third-party N64 collection, you end up with a whole stack of memory cards. I have three VMUs, an official Sega 4X memory card, and a third party 4X card, myself... but yeah, at least they're cheap.

Eh, I made a mistake and misread. Trust me, when you wake up at 4:30 AM CST and then have a cat crawl all over you in the afternoon after going to various places, you have mixups. That, and my cat was trying to eat plastic again, which is ALWAYS an ordeal with my twit cat. But you will need it, man. Third party memory cards are somewhat unreliable. I had a multi-page one for the PSX that I used exclusively for Gran Tursimo 2, which I plugged it in without dusting it, and the whole sucker, with my 42 Gran Turismo 2 replays of all of my first place victories, got wiped off the face of the Earth. You can only really trust the first party ones when it comes to systems that from the late 90s/early 00s.

I traded my last two VMUs for two 4X memory cards and never looked back.
I'd say get whatever is cheapest.
The VMU is a useless gimmick and you won't be playing the shitty minigames. Trust me.

I have a dozen vmus and never had even 1 working battery in any of them. (So I never tried any mini games and don't care to)...
But, they do work great as memory cards.

It's because they drain batteries like a mofo. When I bought my VMU brand new back around 2000 or 2001, I swear the battery was dead within two weeks of casual playing, and I didn't even use it on its own for mini-games.

I don't entirely blame you for that first post. Pichu began his post with something completely irrelevant. Not exactly professional writing here. It's almost like this comic:

Hey guys, I have a little side question. When I start up my Dreamcast, and the VMU beeps, that means the battery is low, correct?

I wouldn't say it was a useless gimmick. Skies of Arcadia is a phenomenal RPG and is only made better by the Pinta's Quest VMU game. I would take my VMU with me to school almost every day. I would play Pinta's Quest and gain all sorts of items, even Moonberries. Later that day when I got home I would use the Moonberries to unlock new character abilities and check out all the new items.
It was the perfect way to gain items, gold, and new character abilities while away from the DC. I bought the Gamecube version day one, but have yet to play it because I can't imagine not being able to play it on the go.

Man, last generation had a lot of cool gimmicks introduced. Eyetoy, linkability, e-reader, and VMU. This gen, we can't do anything more effective than buying an inferior handheld version of the console game.

I don't know about that. Touch screens and motion control are...something...
