Does such a thing exist? Looking for something I can slap onto an 8 way stick so it works better in 4 way games.

In a way, no. Maybe not for your stick necessarily, but for some ball top sticks themselves, yea, some have a 4 way/8 way adjustable plate. I'm gathering this is some home system arcade stick you are using? If so you might be able to swap out the joystick with another that uses a adjuster plate if yours is micro switch based. You'll have to find one that will fit right though. Also, I could be remembering wrong, but was thinking the Capcom Fighter sticks for Snes and Genesis had a 4 way/8 way adjuster. You could also try to hit up a workshop that can cut out custom metal plates and have a adjuster plate made to fit for your stick. Prob be costly though.

How about one of these (for Happ's super only)
SUPER 4-way™ Precision True Restrictor

Vat? Zis iz Arcade Alley, ja?
I can't recommend any, but these certainly do exist. For the Sanwa JLF, here's a video on setting the restrictor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQLXRD-0GBg

Well, really wasn't sure if he was referring to a arcade cab panel stick setup, X-arcade stick for a Mame setup, a Hori stick, let alone ball top, ect, since people talk about both cabs and Mame stuff in here. More then one type out there obviously, and knowing whats being used exactly leads to better advice given....

This is for a 60-in-1 cab. Was looking for something I could just slip on top of the CP. I think a custom metal plate would be the best bet.

Slipping it over the top of the stick won't necessarily restrict movement - a plate will just slide around unless you're willing to fasten it to the top of the control panel. It would be better (the control panel will stay smooth) to go underneath the stick and see what can be done there (which is where the restrictor plate usually goes anyway).
Maybe you ought to go the extra distance and get a good stick with a built-in restrictor plate. You'll be able to continue using a good stick on later projects if you tire of the MAME cab.

I'd rather something I can slip on/slip off, even if the CP isn't smoothed out. When I play the cab, I'll go from Juno First to Pacman and I lose precision from one to the other.

The best idea I can come up with are some small bolts with rounded-top nuts to hold the restrictor in place and that won't be too much in the way when you take the plate off. (Edit: Actually, it would probably be better to could put the bolts in the other way around, if the nuts can be securely fastened to the underside of the control panel, which just leaves a few little holes when you remove the bolts holding the restrictor place down). How easy is it going to be to get into the control panel of this thing?

Very easy.

Now I wonder if it might not be better to get some small squares of whatever material and fasten them down with short thumbscrews - all you would have to do is swing them out of the way for eight-way games.

Ed, you're getting all MacGyver on me. I love it. Keep it up. :)

Have you ever checked out the Mag-Stik Plus Ball top?
Switchable 4 or 8 way from the top of the panel

I use one of these and really like it.

I have a pair of those on my 48-in-1. You will not be disappointed.

Anyone here have the measurements for the mounting holes on the Mag-Stik Plus? I'm hoping I can fit one of these in a mini MAME cabinet but if it won't fit the existing space then I'll have to make due with my flip-it-from-underneath stick. I love Ultimarc's products but hate their site.

Yeah, and their shipping is kinda high. $14 for a $33 stick? Only reason I haven't ordered it yet.

Don't forget you have to buy the balltop stick separately (if that's what you wanted)
That adds another $12-14, so it does add up quick.
The only other option I know of is the OMNI-Stik PRODIGY

I don't care for the look, but it's in about the same price range anyway.

Geez, I'm such a freaking moron - my cabinet already has one of these sticks. :yipes: :embarrassed:
Looking at the diagram the little U bolt and spring seemed familiar. So I went to where I got my cabinet from (there are two others there that have the same joystick) and tried to pull and switch the stick from the top. Sure enough, they're Mag-Stik Plus joysticks with the ball top. So I got on the phone to my brother (who is where my cabinet is since I don't have space for it here right now, the other two take up my available space) and sure enough, same story. It takes a moment to get a feel for the U bolt being engaged but it's smooth sailing after that. Sweet stick!
I feel so stupid not realizing it beforehand. Saved me some coin. LOL
EDIT: Thanks for the link to the specs xertcev, without them I wouldn't have figured it out until I ordered another one
