I can't help but think why not someone make a new SNES game as well?
Just recently heard the news of someone releasing a new Nintendo 8-bit game after 15 years of the system's last release. An action game called Battle Kid that sells for $30 a copy. Genesis has had Beggar Prince and Legend of Wu-Kong I think it was called. You'd think someone would make and release a new SNES game by now. The NES and Genesis has many devoted fans, but so too does SNES if not arguably more.
I know if someone made a decent looking platformer, beat em up or RPG for SNES for around $30, I would pick it up instantly to support the person who made it and also for cookie points it'd be neat to have from a collector-novelty aspect. I'm pretty sure a lot of you would do the same. Game doesn't have to be great, just playable and enjoyable. I'd love to see someone release a brand new platformer, RPG or beat em up on SNES.
Thoughts? Hopefully someone is working on a new SNES game as we speak. That's one of my nerdy gaming dreams... that one day in the next year or so there will be a new SNES release, as it was for excited NES and Genesis owners with Battle Kid and Beggar Prince/LoW respectively.

From what I've heard, it's sold out already :(
Didn't the SNES have some sort of strange architecture that made programming for it a little more difficult? Maybe that's why there are no new games for it? I could've sworn that I've seen that somewhere before, but maybe I'm off a bit.

i think cost would be the biggest hurdle
plus beggar prince and legend of wu kong were not homebrews, they were tawain releases that were cleaned up and translated to english. pier solar will (hopefully) be the first fully fledged homebrewed genesis release. but that project has taken a large team of programmers and several years to finish. an snes project would have similar pitfalls

Inspired from I Wanna Be The Guy along with other classic platformers, Sivak Games proudly presents Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril.
Hoo boy.
Also, a random thought comes to mind after viewing the game's 10 cent boxart: It's easy to make fun of Boris Vallejo-type stuff on classic box covers, and it certainly didn't seem right that the budget for the cover...the domestic cover...was bigger than that of the translation (and probably a good fraction of the original development cost period). But it's the best way to inspire confidence. It doesn't matter if the game is awesome, if it looks like Battle Kid, you're going to turn a bright shade of red every time you take it off the shelf.
"Hey guys! I got a new NES game. Wanna play it?" "Why's it in a paper bag, Steve?"

Someone's able to find a legitimate bypass for the system's CIC protection chip (all regions), you'll start to see new SNES games. Simple as that.

Yes, and Lynx has Zaku (http://www.zaku-lynx.com/). :)

It's possible, even during the days of snes, we had Super Noah's Ark, it used another cart plugged into it to bypass the protection. Many hacks and unreleased games are surfacing like Star Fox 2, Sonic (Speedy Gonzales hack), F-Zero 2(snes version)...
It will just be harder, but doable.

and PC Engine has Insanity!
...With more on the way.

Yeah, but that's bush league. You won't see any big names touching the system until those CICs have been properly blasted.

The first 100 sold out quick, but they are back in stock now.

There has been 2 snes homebrews only 1 on cart though.
Frog Feast(whic essentially a homebrew frog bog) saw a small cart release a few years ago.
A german guy made an 8-player beat em up. it was a rom release only

It's simple, but still impressive for a single person.
I think the more reason you don't see SNES homebrew is that there is less technical document ion. that and graphics and music are more technical. It's a lot of work for a single programmer.
Battle Kid really feels like a production game. It's probably the best NES homebrew to date.

My order for Battle Kid should be delivered tomorrow. They alread have re-stocked the game if you missed out. Check out retrousb.
I tried to make a box for Battle Kid. Please realize this was just for fun, I have never made anything in Paint before. I printed it out on cardstock paper, but it isnt heavy enough. I am going to try and get a heavy cardstock tomorrow. No laughing at my lack of skills, I realize it is pretty bad, but I wanted to give it a try.

Nice one. The old-style Capcom box goes perfect with Sivik's art IMO.

SNES PowerPak (http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=84&osCsid=92d931c984b97d6a1db353f07bd84f67) includes the option of lockout chips. There isn't a universal option, true, but I don't see why there couldn't be a 'build per order' option for PAL or US or whom ever is a lesser audience for the release. ...Though I do not know if these chips are scavenged or manufactured.

This Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril looks great! I had no idea this was even in the works. A new NES game? It's a shame there isn't a ROM dump... I want to play this now! Looks like a cross between Mega Man and Metroid... or Goonies 2?
Anyone had a play through of it yet?

The guy who made it posts on NintendoAge. I hope a ROM release is forthcoming, I'll still pick up the game though.

There will be no ROM release, only available in a physical cartridge.

Unless someone who buys the cart dumps it to ROM.

A few posts above you I mentioned it is available from retrousb. Also, someone mentioned the guy who made the game posts on NA all the time. Everything you need is on those two sites. If you like NES games, this looks like a keeper. I should have my copy tomorrow.

Given the scope of the hardware on the NES, and that of the SNES. I'd say that's one reason why you don't see much homebrew dev on the SNES. The NES is alive and kicking with lots of projects for it in the works as well as tools. While this doesn't necessarily translation into 1:1 project to final game release, it doesn't mean there isn't more serious activity. And compared to the NES, well.. the SNES isn't receiving much attention (though it gets the MOST for translations of any system). Anyway, the scope of both systems capabilities - it's easier for a one or two person team to bang out a respectable 8bit NES game, than to that of what would be acceptable on the SNES - I would imagine.
Maybe some one could make a list, but here's a short one from memory:
Genesis: Pier Solar is the only "homebrew" game for the Genesis to be released on cart and sold (or to be). The two by SFT are localizations of already existing games.
NES: The title from this discussion (there are a few more simple games I've seen for sale though).
SNES: don't remember any off hand, other than the German made game recently. But what that available to buy in box/cart form?
PCE: Insanity, meteor blaster, (another one by mindrec), and soon to be released MSR
GB/C: I though there was a few, but I can't remember any details. GB/GBC was really huge in the dev scene back in 1998/99/00. I was there. It was my first console to code on :)
Atari 8bit: I think a few recently, no? Not sure if they were free or purchasable.
c64: No need to even mention anything
I know Charles Doty released Frogger on a lot of system (as part of his goal) and where purchasable, but I'm thinking more in line with something a bit more complex. But I guess you could still count those?

as much as I dislike the C64 as of late, Knight n' Grail does not disappoint.

I will be getting battle kid as soon as there are some more available. :)
I wonder how much it costs to rifle out those cartridges!

Apparently they ran out of the manual and are in the process of printing more, should be about a week. The new manual will have a few corrections as well. I was lucky and got one of the carts that have the proto rom on it. A few of the carts went out with the proto rom on it by mistake. the proto is a complete build withjust a few really minor changes.
Check out my game and box below:
