A local store had a TurboExpress in their glass case marked $19.99. I asked the employee at the store about it, and he explained that it worked but had no sound. He pulled it out and fired it up (it had Keith Courage plugged into it) and sure enough the display looked pretty good, no more washed out than my Lynx or Game Gear, but it had no sound. It was also missing the battery cover. It still struck me as a good deal, but they let me put it on hold for a few days, so I'm taking the time to do some research.

In your opinion is this worth picking up at that price? In doing some initial research it looks like the sound issue may relate to dead capacitors similar to the Game Gear, and I'm not afraid to get in there and replace caps. Are there other, bigger issues I should look for with TurboExpress units? Any chance I'll be able to locate a battery cover?

thats a hell of a deal, and the sound issue is easy enough to fix, but I woudln't hold your breath on finding a battery cover in the wild, maybe post soemthing on the buy sell board someone might have a dead one with a battery cover. but 20$ I'd jump on pretty much no matter the condition. the screens do suffer from dead pixels so make keep that in mind as well.

Definitely buy it. Worth a bit more than $20 even w/ those two problems. The sound issue is, supposedly, an easy fix if you know how to (or cheap enough to pay someone else to do it). Just make sure to check the screen for dead pixels. Otherwise, sounds like a steal. Also, if this is just for your own use, the sound should work fine thru headphones (I know my own does and it has the sound issue), so it's really not a big deal.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. Amazingly, this thing has been sitting there for a while. I saw it a while back marked $79.99 and its been a month or more since I've been in that store, so I have no idea how long its been marked down.

They seem a lot more responsible than the game store I infrequently frequent. Stuff will sit on their shelves for months, years, decades w/o them marking it down. Pretty stupid, imo, since it's taking up valuable real estate (to the point where they took some of it down and boxed it up and put it in the back, like it'll get sold back there). But of course if I want to buy it, it's still the same fuckin price regardless of how much dust it's collected since they got it. XD

Thats pretty much how it is here as well, including flea markets. I always wondered why they don't wake up with a little common sense or atleast enough that they realize that their copy of Duck Hunt/SMB is not going to sell for $100.

The thrifts here just throw their stuff away if it doesn't sell. If I were them, I'd mark down to make even just a *little* cash.
A penny lost is a penny earned to some, I guess. :/

Anyway, back on topic for me! Yes, I would definitely buy a TurboExpress at that price. Sound or not, that's still a wonderful deal. At least that little issue is fixable.

Great price and a common problem with these systems. You'll often see either dead/weak video or no sound, or both on the units due to capacitor issues. Good thing you put it on hold, not that it seems to matter considering how long you've said it's been there. Enjoy it man! Sucks about the battery cover but maybe you will be able to figure something out.
