Nothing except a Japanese release a month ago besides DQ 9 was released in Japan last july so naturally it would come before 6

Isn't Nintendo of America publishing Dragon Quest IX in the U.S.? I thought I read that somewhere.

Damn, why does it have to be on DS. I don't like playing RPG's on little screens. Sucks.

Yup, that's what Nintendo indicated in their press release.

And indeed, fret not about DQVI, it's not cancelled, simply delayed probably due to the release of DQIX. Besides, Square-Enix is probably doing the same thing as for DQIV and V: having the worldwide localization done with an Europe release being slightly before the North-American release.

The mere fact Square even tried to release the "Non RPG" smut, that they dared to call DQ 9 originally, makes me not even care if it were to be canceled(not to mention the other DQ titles Square made went from just ok, to a complete POS), there is no doubt in my mind, that even though it was completely redigned to be an "RPG"(to prevent the Japanes from taking heads, oh man, you gotta love the Japanese), that It's gonna suck(It's very clear, Square doesn't even like making RPGs anymore, anyway sigh. Damn, I miss ENIX, and old school Square).

Granted it being on the DS will limit the typical Square BS, but we've all seen, that even without having the freedom to only focas on graphics, they will still find away to scew up the systems(no random battles in a monster taming game+very few monsters at that, no randomly generated maps, exc, exc, and trying to turn DQ9 into a non RPG).

Wow, you consider that game excellent, It's subpar at best compared to every single other DQ game made before it(with the exception of perhaps DQ1, but that's the grand daddy of RPGs, so that's expected. It was awesome back when it came out, but being as basic as you can get without it being a text mud, prevented it from aging well).

its simplicity is what made it great. overly complex stories and battle systems do not enhance rpgs, they make rpgs boring. 20 years from now, i will likely be able to replay DQVIII before i put up with pretty much any other PS2 era RPG. compared to the convoluted final fantasy games, square got DQVIII just right.

This. DQ games aren't about story, they are about basic, stripped down, uncomplicated gameplay (although, DQ8 is a little heavy on the grinding part of this....).

Hoorah, now I get free club nintendo coins for a game I was going to buy any ways. But why is Nintendo publishing this any ways? Dragon Quest 5 didn't seem to do very well, makes me paranoid that it might be a sign that the US could soon be missing out on titles in the series.. again..

According to CAG, Toys R Us is giving away a $15 giftcard when you pick up this game the first week.

Best Buy is giving away a cap with purchase, but only to the first 7500 reward zone buyers. (It's also mailed to you)

Good Toys R Us deal except that it doesn't look like it's valid online and the nearest Toys R Us is 40 minutes away from me. I'd then have to either pick something right then or go back and purchase something later. I already preordered it at Amazon so I'll leave it that way.

I picked it up at GameStop today. I have only played it for about an hour but so far so good. It is a standard Dragon Quest game a lot like DQ8. I was a little bit worried that they would screw it up since I am a turn based only RPG player.

Yeah it's turn based. Supposedly Level 5 wanted it to be action based but Yuji Hori was against it and had them make it a regular Dragon Quest title. If you watch the 2006 trailer, you can actually see when it once had action gameplay.

I preordered it from Amazon though so I'll probably have it in about a week or so. When I preordered Red Dead Redemption I had it a couple days after release and chose free shipping, so hopefully Dragon Quest 9 is the same.

Wow, I didn't even notice that when I first saw the trailer. I'm glad they didn't go with an action-based battle system.....like almost every RPG seems to be doing.

I just picked my copy up at TRU. I never go to this one because it's not in a great area and looks like it was last cleaned sometime during the Regan administration, but it's close to where I work so I gave it a shot. I was just getting ready to walk away when I asked about the $15 gift card.

Cashier: I gave it to you
Me: No you didn't
Cashier: Sure I did. Check your bag
Me (after dumping out my bag on the counter): No you didn't
Cashier: You must have put it in your pocket
Me (after dumping out my pockets on the counter): Nope
Cashier: Oh well you must have dropped it somewhere (then she starts to walk away towards the back room)
Me (yelling after her): No it's not here

Finally she called her supervisor over who turned the register inside out and still couldn't find the card. After awhile the manager picks up a pile of papers and, lo and behold, there's the card.

Cashier: Oh wow, I wonder how it got under there?

I wonder how many gift cards shes been stealing? Nifty little racket there, all you have to do is look like you put the card in the bag (which I swear she did) and shove the card in your pocket. By the time the customer figures it out it's too late. I'll never go to that TRU again that's for sure.

What a dirtbag.

Anyway, has anyone seen the Brady guide? It's not in stock anywhere (TRU, Gamestop, Best Buy, Target) and Amazon says it isn't shipping until August. That can't be right...can it?

Sometimes the guides are placed in the stockroom until the game comes out. Since you get a discount with game purchase. You should ask if they had them in their stockroom. You can also order guides through Barnes and Nobel if you have one near you.

That girl should get fired but if it's anything like my company, she'll get written up and that's it. The girl where I work was stealing from the company yet given another chance. I would have fired her as soon as that was found out.

Agree 100%.

Turn based combat with no random battles = the perfect RPG architecture.

I'm loving the game so far. I'm still amazed what you can do on the DS with an unlimited budget.

I may be the only who is actually happy the game is out on the DS. Wider audience for starters, but I have a feeling that a DQ game on a modern console would get absolutely buried.

Probably because people wanted the "actian-shootan" a la Bethesda and Bioware.

I played it for a while last night. It is definitely a Dragon Quest game, though, breaking the mold, it is very impressive graphically. The cinemas are the most amazing I have seen on the DS, and the 3D overworld is detailed. They got rid of random battles, which is also a nice touch. The music is in the same vein as all the other DQ games. If you like DQ, you can't really go wrong here.

Started a little while ago. Got to the second town, created a party and then killed the second boss. I'm really enjoying the game, though there are a few annoyances.

There is a pause between character and enemy attacks, especially if a character is being healed during battle it stops longer as they turn around before they get healed. I'd also rather have random battles rather than getting in battle with enemies on the field and dungeons have retarded AI(so easy to dodge.) I also don't like the equipment screen much, which oddly enough they allow you to sell items in the old style of Dragon Warrior screens, but when equipping items you're forced to use the new system.

You can get speakers that don't need to be plugged in and utilize whatever they're hooked up to as a power source for around $20. $50 for some portable speakers is a bit much. I'd say $30 is a bit more reasonable only because it's modeled after a Dragon Quest slime.

But speakers like you describe would drain hte DS battery much faster.
The Dragon Quest speakers are self powered and amplified so there isn't additional battery drain from the DS. That's the point.

I agree $50 is a bit much. And especially considering that the stand will not connect to the DSXL it is a bit disappointing that they can't supply an adapter or something. None the less, I've pre-ordered a pair. ...and I fully expect them to be discounted significantly in no time at all.
