So has any of you ever actually tried beating Battletoads for the NES in 2 player mode? Its a whole different game that way and a huge challenge!
It took me and my friend almost 2 years to accomplish this and make a recording where we dont lose any continues. We did play the European version, which has its advantages and disadvantages. Some might say the US version is slightly harder as its 60 Hz instead of 50 Hz of course. Then again, the US version cant really be beaten in co-op mode since player 2 has to die in stage 11 due to a bug (hence our choice of the pal version). And also, the bug in Volkmire's Inferno where u cant get hit if u stick to the bottom is fixed so thats a bit more difficult as well.
Anyway, we're really proud at what we've accomplished and somewhere in the future we'll be spending some time on improving this run even more (especially the last stage kind of failed in the recording, its haaaaaard with 2 players). But for now, we let it rest. Here's the links to youtube for the people who are interested:

obviously, i havent watched all these vids yet, i will do that on my lunch break :) But seriously that is quite an accomplishment. I personally do not know anyone that has beaten this game on single player, let alone co-op! thats awesome. cant wait to watch it!
congrats and thanks for sharing.

Thank you!
This game was by far our greatest and most creative gaming accomplishment. When in co-op mode, you will basically have to make rules/agreements for every step you take or one of the players dies. Death is around the corner everywhere in Battletoads! So this playthrough was very fun to watch for ourselves as well as the way way we split tasks and everything is very much our own invention. There was never really any material we could use to learn from as there is no other "real" playthrough available (theres a tas speedrun but yea... most of that stuff isnt copyable).
The more time it takes to master something and the more personal imput, the more rewarding the result :)

I was playing 2 player mode with a friend back in the day, got up to the end of the game, but before we could finnish it, we got the flashing screen of death(omg that sucked). Needless to say, we never played that game again, damn I hate the model 1 NES.

Beating Battletoads in 2-player must have taken EXTREME cooperation and skill from both parties! I tip my hat to you, good sir.
I could only beat it in single player, myself, on the Genesis after a year or so of repetitive playing. Saw the ending, and the fact it was all of 10 seconds long soured me on the game since then. :p

I thought the clinger-winger level was bugged for 2 players, in that the 2nd player never took off. Have I been wrong all this time?

wow battletoads in 2 player mode that reminds me of the AVGN episode.
To do this you most work together like a F1 pit stop crew .
my hat is off.

Never could get past Level 2 without a Game Genie in both modes. Still fun as hell, though.

Zthun, you're not wrong, thats a bug in the US NTSC version thats been fixed in the PAL version. I explained this in the original post, its the main reason why we chose to beat the PAL version together.

This looks absolutely nerve-wracking.

It is EXTREMELY nerve-wracking, believe you me. The worst is the final stage, the hardest 10 minutes of complete concentration.
What I still really hate about this run are our 2 deaths in the final stage(before the boss). Those were both caused by actual paralysis and were both just before a checkpoint. If those 2 werent there I would have called this "the perfect run", now I wont rest until its done over one day...

Like watching a graceful figure skater suddenly do a faceplant in the middle of an impossibly complex routine.

Are you sure Battletoads isn't some giant hoax designed to make us modern folk laugh at the 80s?

*kick*
Our next video will be up soon: Contra: Hard Corps in co-op mode, no continue loss. As always, recorded from real hardware.
We're wondering what to do next. We had Ikaruga in mind but then i found out there's such an incredible co-op run (played by one guy:|) that we will never be able to top...
Maybe we should do one of the older Double Dragons? Or maybe a shmup like Darius Twin? If anybody has a good idea for a next project that provides a good challenge, please post it here, and of course it has to be a co-op game.

baraka you should submit that to the cubex55 channel on youtube, they're the longplays.net site. They would love that, I'm sure of that. Not only that but it would get you thousands more views too!

Thanks for the tip! What exactly do you mean by submitting to them though, should I send the videos to them so they upload them or do you mean they can support our channel in some way? I'm still sort of a youtube noob hehe..
