This flea market guy said he had a Saturn that had the memory card slot modded to play genesis games. some people told me this is impossible. What do the pro's say?

This is why you never listen to Fleamarket guys.
If there was such a mod you'd have heard about it on every gaming board by now.

I've actually heard about this mod here and there over the years, but I never wanted to risk a saturn in attempting it. My cousin sent me his Saturn with a broken disc drive the other week though, so I went ahead and gave it a shot.

It seems to work pretty well IMO.

How much do you charge for this mod? :D

I'd say about 25 dollars in parts, but the labor is pretty intensive. Let's say $200 shipped? I can mount the mod in the case very securely, if its going out for shipment:

don't do it, he is using substandard mounting adhesive, for a couple hundred more, I could use a much better (and stylish) method.

here is the dispenser of the product that I use:

http://www.bookstore.vt.edu/ePOS?store=1&item_number=M18D&form=shared3%2fcatalogs%2fcommon%2flarge_image_pop up.html&design=vt

you can tell it is superior due to the mahogany and silver highlights.

All jokes aside, this would be a really cool mod. Maybe someone can trim up a Genesis 3 board to fit inside. Problem is, how would you get the controllers to work with it? You'd have to mod it to work with the Saturn controllers. Next you'd have to install a system select switch. Another issue is the power supply, how would you get both to work on one power supply? And finally, combining the video output into one output on the back of the console would be a lot of fun. Now that I think about it, all this may just not be feasable. :argue:

I hope this guy didn't say you can play Master System Mycards on the Turbografx? Or that Sega CD games work on the Saturn.

My mod is a proven success, I've even discovered ways to play Turbo Grafx, SNES, and CPS2 games in the Saturn's cartridge slot with my exhaustive technical research. If everyone hadnt insulted my adhesive methods, I would have shown the super secret mod to make PS3 discs play in the Saturn flawlessly.

Yup, and if you install 2 32x's to the saturn, and some gameshark code, you can play Dreamcast cd's on that sucker too.

Don't feel bad, the guy who sold a friend of mine a saturn was also totally convinced that that slot was for Genesis games. I tried to tell him it wasn't, then convinced him to sell her the saturn for $10. I'll call it a win anyway.

If you daisy chain 2 32x's together does that make it a 64XX?

If you hook up 2 Dreamcasts to a PS2 fat's drive bay, you can make a Xbox supercomputer that can possibly blow up a small nation. And if you hook 12 Game Genies into the Game Boy slot on a Game Boy Player and then hook it up with an USB adaptor to a Wii, you can magically play Laserdiscs on it somehow. ROFL

EDIT: The Southerner approved Saturn mod adhesive:

Meh... I've been playing AES/MVS carts and 360 disk games on my Saturn for years... You guys are lame rookies.

Might as well go for the unholy trinity 96XXX mod. That's 69 with 27 fingers in your partially tore butthole...

Pfff, that's nothing. I stuck eight GameCubes together, and made the first fourth dimensional game system, the GameTesseract(TM)!

I would have taken a picture of it, but just looking at it is enough to cause insanity. It's totally worth it though, even if I do need to wait until 2035 for the first 4D TVs to come out.

It's horrible! The insanity! I taped a genesis to a nuclear bomb and jacked it into my brain! Too much blast processing!

The present!

The future!

All planes!

All realities!

All Chuck Norris!

All Mr. T!

All Cock Robin!

All everything!

It is his fault. He knows, you know and we know. Stop being a denial enabler Ed. :p

Now if he said that you could play laserdisks on a broken 8-track player with a chewing gum wrapper modification - that would make perfect sense! That I could totally understand. It's so obvious! O_O It amazes me that still to this day it's never been attempted. *sigh*

That's ridiculous.

To do that you need to scalp the guts out of a CED player and wire them into an LP table, then mod the needle with a red laser.

Noob.

That's cool and all, but I play my Dreamcast games on a modded NES toploader.

Stay tuned guys, I'm about to post my schematic to convert a ColecoVision for Edison Cylinder playback... It will blow your bits right outta the stylus groove! Unfortunately, the GameBoy/Waffle iron project is on indefinite hold...

on a semi related note, was there a reason for the cart slot other than for the memory cart? did they plan on making saturn carts? if not, why no backwards compatibility?

It's obviously there to instigate consumers to mod their Saturns into Genesis-compatible consoles. What else would it be for?!?

The idea was that you could play 32X games. It was supposed to fit in with the whole genesis/32X/neptune paradigm. Sega realized how stupid of an idea that was and killed it. IIRC there were a few carts released in Japan, although it may have been cart+CD.

Unless you have a Genesis motherboard in the case,no,the Saturn CPU is entirely different.

yea so I THINK I got the hint that its slighty hard to do this mod, so I have a new question;

If I took a GameBoy Printer and wired it up to an EyeToy and rigged that to take still photographs, could I make an animated flipbook of myself trying to put Genesis games in the Saturn memory card slot? I want to make that my new DP animated avatar

The external link port on the GameBoy is a serial port but it is NOT compatible with any known serial format. Direct control of the output pins and reading of the input pins also is not possible on this port because of the design.

Then again there is this: http://www.devrs.com/gb/hardware.php
