Both systems have nice titles, but if you really had to get down to over all quality of games and selection too, the 3DO wins easily.

As much as I enjoy my Jaguar I'm gonna have to go with the 3DO, there's just more worthwhile games for it after you dig through the crap.

This is like asking which pile of dung smells worse. LOL
Seriously I think 3DO is a slightly better system due to the fact it has Samurai Shodown and Super SFII Turbo but then again the handfull of good games for it can easily be found on better systems.

3DO. I bought one at launch, and loved the few games I had....Wing Commander, Total Eclipse, Crash n' Burn, Monster Manor, etc.
The Jaguar is definitely next on the list though.

the jaguar
the holy trinity of classic video game companies are nintendo, sega, and atari. the jag my not be much of a swan song for atari... but it was the big finale for the company and is collectable the same way the virtual boy and 32x are collectable.
the 3DO really doesnt have much of a legacy.

3DO easily. Granted I do have a LOT more play time on one than a Jaguar, but very, very little on the Jag grabs me.

I'll be honest...it depends on your style of games. Most people will probably go with the 3DO because it's a friendlier system with a wider game selection, but I happen to have both and enjoy both equally.
Have you looked up some of the titles for the games on Youtube to help decide? There are channels out there that specifically cater to 3DO and Jaguar.

I doubt this would even be considered a end all list of decent titles for each system, but these are ones I had saved as check list for titles I consider wants for each platform since I had owned most of them. The few I did not own I know people who do who tout them as must, so I kept them on my list. Definitely enough on each to make someone happy, but yea, as I and others said, 3DO has more/is better:

Also, since Nintegail Grafx-16's on ignore I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume he said both are shit, and possibly that he feels the FDS is waaaaay waaaay betters and stuff, right? Am I close? I heard he followed me in and was trying to troll the 3DO forums for a very short time, so not surprised to see him stalking me in here to shit on the two systems.
Guys never owned either platform, so don't take anything he says seriously, just ignore him. Seriously. I think this is a ridiculous topic. These aren't even similar systems. The 3do and Jaguar were each built for a certain type of games and their respective libraries reflect that fact. They both have great exclusive titles and are both worthy of adding to a collection.

Yet some people may only WANT one..and these are their choices, hardly a ridiculous topic. Personally I've scaled back my collection size, and would understand someone not wanting BOTH systems (room wise, 2 libraries of games to worry about, etc.).

But The Jaguar and 3DO are rarely seen in the wild
I find atleast two 3DO's in the wild every year and have found upwards of 5 in a single year. But I hardly ever see the Jaguar. If you were only going to pick one I'd suggest the 3DO. Not only does it have better games but it's also region free so you can play even more games once you add in the Japanese library.

Thats a bit true. Both pretty much have games of a different style and feel and the two systems are vastly different on the graphics side. If you could actually afford to collect for both it may be worth it. Worse comes to worse, both maintain high resell values so someone could always sell off what they didn't want.

There are many systems I'd choose before the 3DO or Jaguar, was not a fan of either. Jag controllers suck, and 3DO consoles have questionable reliability. I believe almost everything 3DO is much more expensive than the Jaguar? That all said, while I am an Atari fan, the 3DO library is far superior, even though many of its games are available on PC or PSX (which is why I'd never bother getting one). I myself would go and get a Turbo Grafx, Saturn, Master System, Intellivision, Gamecube, Astrocade, and a Lynx, all of which I do not have, before even considering either of those two.

Going for either system does depend on WHY you would want the system in your collection. The 3DO FZ-1 is actually very reliable, and has some decent games. I am not a fan of the controller, but as a an early 3D console, it has some decent games. The jaguar has some great console exclusive games as well, but will probably cost you more in the long run. My vote between the two is the 3DO, due to having more games I would actually play.

I like to collect for the Jaguar. Every now and then I pick up titles I don't have, hoping one day I can have a complete US set. That would be awesome. :)

3DO has a lot more games but most are shit. As few games as the Jag has, it has a better ratio of good to shit games than the 3DO. It also looks cooler, cart games = no loading, controller is better. Has a very active fanbase still today, moreso than 3DO. 3DO may technically have more good games, but nearly all of them can be had on the PlayStation. I just like the Jag better. :) I do think the 3DO is cool too though, I had one and almost 100 games but have been selling it off bit by bit. If I could afford it I would own / collect for both. Wish I knew how to burn games lol... :P Definite plus of the 3DO there...

controller is better.
You actually like that phone-dial-looking tablet more than the 3DO controller?
Kevincal
03-07-2010, 10:53 PM
The 3do's d pad is atrocious and the controller is just not comfortable to hold. The Jag controller is super comfortable to hold and has a better d-pad and a lot more buttons. Those phone dial buttons are actually very useful once you learn how to use them. ;)

I always felt that both the Jaguar and the 3DO had terrible D-pad's. The D-pad on the Jaguar is really the only uncomfortable aspect of that controller for me. Didn't the 3DO have some 3rd party controllers as a substitute for the standard one's? I could've sworn I say a 3rd party pad that looked exactly like an SNES controller for the 3DO at one point.

The Jaguar has some really good games, and the fact that it's not looked upon all that kindly might help you find cheap games for one. The 3DO is an interesting system, but I haven't found all that many really great games on it. Probably due to the fact that I've only started collecting games for it in the past couple years, and only ones I find in the wild. Whereas I've been a Jaguar supporter since before launch (Dallas was one of the early test markets).
I personally prefer the Jaguar's controller to the 3DO's, although I have a good Logitech one that's pretty nice. And I tend to come across 3DO consoles more often than Jaguars. I can name several stores in the area that have 3DOs for sale, but I don't know any stores that have a Jag.

Honestly, both are an acquired taste.
I have owned both and have kept my Jag and enjoy it, but i also enjoyed playing the 3DO.
Really though... you should get a CDi!
But remember with Jaguar you gotta buy 2 systems, Jaguar AND CD add-on, 3DO is just a CD unit.

You did. There are several 3rd party 3DO controllers and some of them were modeled after the Snes pad.

Id go with the CDI , j/k
well if i had to have one or the other.....its almost a tie
it is tricky most good 3do games ended up on other systems like psx or saturn or pc..
but tha jag had a lot of games with no other versions.
3do still gets the edge can do a little more with it.

The Jag cd does have a few really nice games. If you want to be able to show the Jag off in full glory, or enjoy all the good it offered, getting a Jag CD is a good idea. If your fine with playing Hover Strike and Cybermorph carts instead of the Cd releases, then don't bother. I got to say though, the cd releases are a lot better, and Blue Lightning is a lot of fun. Jag Cd systems can be finicky though, and some of the disc had defects. The plus is that there isn't a lot on it, so you can get all the titles fast if you have the cash and look in the right places.

Alien vs. Predator, Missile Command 3D, I-War (Tron-style tank game), Zero 5, Super Burnout, Atari Karts, Iron Soldier, and Hover Strike (as long as you accept that your hovercraft doesn't move like a car) on cartridge and Battlemorph and Highlander on Jag CD are all good games.

I've always preferred the Jag over 3DO. Atari as a brand just always appealed to me more, and it was always a gamers machine from the beginning... whereas the 3DO was all about it's MULTIMEDIA capabilities.
Give me Alien VS. Predator and Iron Soldier any day of the week.

The 3DO - it has Plumbers Don't Wear Ties.
In all honesty though, I love my 3DO. It's not as expensive to collect for as you may think. Most of the games can be had for under $10. The consoles are very reliable despite what people have said, trust me, I am on my 3rd 3DO now (FZ-1), and I have NEVER had an issue with any of them (another FZ-1 and an FZ-10).
If you stick to the Panasonic models you are usually safe. And really, the games are pretty good despite what people say.

Then my friends moms boyfriend bought my friend a 3DO (most likely so he could bang my friends mom) but the system didn't have any games so we would just sit there and play the demo disc over and over just amazed we were playing a 700 dollar gaming machine.
Wow, your friend's mom must have been really hot.

So, what has everyone learned here? Seems that I am glad that there are at least some fans out there of both of these systems. I can say that the Jaguar edges out the 3DO though. There are more fun games on the Jaguar and games are still releasing for it too. And no, they are not all releasing on the CD system only either. Real cart releases like the earlier released Mad Bodies.

This is a fairly subjective proclamation.

Both 512-bit private keys for 3DO file signatures have been successfully factored recently, so homebrew and new releases for the 3DO should be around the corner.

I gotta agree with Steve W and tom. Jaguar is the way to go. I owned both systems for several years and played the Jaguar a lot more often.
I thought the Jaguar had a better library. tom has already listed plenty of good games. Not to mention two other advantages I think Jaguar has over the 3DO.
1. The console is more durable. At least from my gaming experience. Plenty of 3DO's have already crapped out, particularly the "cheaper" models like Goldstar.
2. Saving your progress in a game is a heck of a lot easier on the Jaguar. Right to the cart. None of this cheesy memory manager stuff like you see on the 3DO.
3DO was just a watered down beta-Playstation 1 as far as I'm concerned.

Cool thing about the jag, is there are a number of places where you can buy them brand new. Including pretty much all the games. Both are rare in Australia, although I believe 3DO at least was actually sold here, unlike the Jag. A friend had a 3DO, but i never got to try it out. I like the Jag controller, it is a pretty ergonomic design. The keypad isn't needed for many games, but is damn useful in AVP (and I assume Doom, which I haven't got). You want MAP? Hit the MAP key! Change weapon? Hit the relevant key! None of this scrolling through menus business. None of this helps with 3DO of course. Just that I dig the Jag so I had to chime it (",)

Jag had some nice games on it, but 3DO had the world. 3DO was sponsored by EA. Atari had Rayman, AvP (the good version), a few other. I bought my Jag for $20 at Kaybee Toy store the year they discounted the system. I wish I still had the mofo. :-(
