View Full Version : Does the PS3 work in your car??

Not sure if this should be under "Tech" or here, so I'm posting here. We're going on a Spring Break road trip next week and I was wondering if the PS3 can run off the power adapter/cig lighter in a car. We took our Xbox 360 in the car a couple of years ago but it required more power than the adapter provided, so it wouldn't work. Usually we roll with the original Xbox or Gamecube but I wanted to have some COD4 or Brutal Legend available, so has anyone done this?
Thanks!

I really doubt it, the PS3 is a power hog, so if the 360 wont even play, no way the PS3 will, infact it would probally kill the car's battery, due to how much power the PS3 sucks up.

I personally have no idea, but Google turned up this:

Really I'm just replying so I can say FINALLY... Zoltor got his butt banned!

It will, but you need a big enough power inverter. I have a 1500watt inverter for my truck(18 wheeler), and it will work on that.
Hey, they don't call me the OTRGamer for nothing. Worked great until my LCD mount failed and the nice 22" Samsung became pieces on the floor. I blame Chicago road construction... lol

Hell no it won't.
Anyway road trips are what the DS and PSP are for.

I would get at least a 750 watt inverter (you want to stay at least 10% above the maximum draw of the device). You should probably get yourself a deep cell car battery too, or tour headlights are going to dim when you turn it on

Hmm. Sounds like the old Xbox is going to work just fine.
Thanks for all your input, guys!
Why would you want to play your PS3 in your car...
That being said, I post this in memory of Zoltor.
Good Riddance.

I'm guessing it's a temporary ban (unfortunately).

Remember too that the PS3 slim and phat use different amounts of power. The feasibility of running the slim in your car is much better.
(Ripped off from Cnet) (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10318727-1.html)
(in watts)____PS3 Slim______PS3 (60G, first gen)
Standby______0.36________1.22
Idling________75.19_______171.3
BR movie_____80.90______172.79
Game idling___95.35_______203.8
Game playing__96.24______206.90
YouTube_______85.08______181.28
If you're going to run it in your car, pay attention the the amperage (in addition to the wattage) rating of the inverter your going to purchase. You should be able to find the amperage rating on the bottom side of the PS3 or the manual.

Disc based systems are a bad idea for car installs, the discs tend to get scratched all to hell. It's better to mod an xbox and load the games to the hard drive.

When driving 14-16 hours in a car, having a videogame system hooked up to the cars LCD screen in the back is the only way to keep my 12 and 9 year olds happy. And if they're happy, the driver is happy.

When I was a kid I had to use my Gameboy and I was damn glad to have it.

The PS3 is so powerful that it would drive the car FOR you! ;)

I've seen tons of 360's built into Scion Xb's so I'm sure a PS3 could be put into one as well. Just make special note of the specific power consumption mentioned by others.

No, this isn't a permanent-mount type of situation that I was asking about. I know that if I wanted it mounted in there for good it could be done. I was just seeing if anyone just plugged it into their cigarette lighter and hooked up the composite video and had success. My wife's car is an Acura MDX and we have no problems with older systems (or the Wii for that matter), but the new powerful ones don't seem to work.
Thanks again for all the input!

Install this inverter (http://www.cobra.com/products//cpi-1575-1500-watt-power-inverter) under a seat someplace, plug PS3's power cord into it, and play away. Works like a charm. If you've ever put in a car audio amplifier, the wiring is the same.
Its also very useful for other things, especially if you go camping. The one in my truck will power a small microwave even.
Also, watch the truck stops. I got mine for $129. Anything over 750 continuous is going to work fine. I've been seeing those in the $59 range.

I wouldn't trust using a system in a car - the 360 has disc scratching issues when you turn it sideways, imagine being in a bumpy road? I don't know how the PS3's disc tray would deal with that scenario.

You've read his posts, right?
The idea of playing Brutal Legend or whatever on the road seems weird to me, but also decadent and just a little sensual. Are you using a built-in display, or are you planning on plugging a monitor in, too?

Too much PS3 bashing. People don't like it when people make fun of other people's sources of enjoyment. Gotta let people choose what they want to play without totally mocking them. That's what I would think. The PS3 and 360 are both good sources of high end entertainment, every bit as much as a PS1 or Sega Saturn, it doesn't matter who does better in the market when they both have good games. If you don't like something people don't usually like hearing you whine over it all the time.
Anyway I would agree that disc based systems in a car is risky, but if you are willing to take the risks and go the extra mile of installing that power inverter just be aware that you never know what could happen until you actually try it. I would test it out first by driving up and down steep hills or on a rocky / heavily graveled area with a DVD or audio CD you don't care about much playing in the system and then take a look at the disc when you are done. If that doesn't hurt the disc, you'll probably be pretty safe unless something major happens.
If the disc gets stuck in your system? uh oh. It's a risk you have to be willing to take.

Ok. I thought you were trying to pimp your ride with the PS3 but you actually just want to floss it for a bit:)

ive seen PS3s AND 360s in cars at car show/autoramas. Its kinda neat. No idea how they set it up though, but they were in tricked out cars, done by people who do this thing all the time.
Though I cant imagine playing games (bumpy road + disc), unless they are DLC ones, or you are like, just playin music, or are playing AFTER you stopped moving.
I drive an 88' toyota. The only thing id ever setup in that mothaforker would be an NES or a PCE. Nothing past the 80s is allowed in the car!!!!! :vamp:

Um, who was bashing any system?
On-Topic
I don't see why everyone is so skeptical of a disk based system in a car, since most of us have one in our dashboard.
And i disagree with a previous poster who recommended a modded xbox with everything on the hard drive. A disk based system IMHO would be much more reliable than a hard drive based system. On rough roads the HD would get damaged faster than a disk based system.

CD players made for cars are specifically designed to handle bumps without scratching the fuck out of your disc. An Xbox 360 is specifically designed to scratch the fuck out of your disc if you look at it too hard.

One good thing about the 360 is that you could rip games to the hdd so that disc spinning would be minimal.
