Darius and Gradius Connection?

Lately, I have been playing a lot of shooters. With my favorites being Gradius, and R-type. I recently picked up Darius Gaiden for the Sega Saturn, and was wondering if there was any type of connection between the two series. Albeit the obvious end to their names 'ius.'

A better connection would be Gradius and Parodius. ;)
