Very neat little device, lets you view the ROM of a game and SRAM as files on a drive letter. I haven't tried it yet (will be using it to dump a proto of Mutant League Football later) but I thought I'd share pics!

Heeeeeeeeeeey.

Would it be possible to dump my NBA Live 97 proto with this? Or bootleg SNES games?

There's a couple of bootleg SNES games at a local rental shop I've been wanting to dump for years...

Yeah, that's what I got it for.

I'll dump them for you if you cover shipping to me, and ship them back to you at my cost. How long do they let you rent for? :D

This thing was $100 CAD shipped, so you could just buy one...

That'd be a problem because it costs $3 to rent each game out PER DAY. I don't have that kinda cash. :P

I might send the Genny proto to you to dump it though. Once I get some cash. I'd also like to send you my FF III SNES cart so you can rescue my old as hell save games! That'd be great, having my endgame uh, game from 1997 as an SRAM dump.

Be a complete asshole and swap the boards out on them :D

Heh. That's not a bad idea, I'm pretty sure nobody even rents the SNES stuff anymore. The games in question are Tekken 2 and Dragon Ball Final Bout (and I think they have an International Super Star Soccer hack, too.) I've never seen those two games available on the interweb, so...

I'll send you a PM later.

If you're going to do it... I'd keep the originals intact and just put different games with printed labels in there.

I love bootleg stuff btw so if you want to sell me a few to pay for the postage...

Kitsune Sniper
03-12-2010, 05:35 PM
Yeah no. The video shop owners are assholes, but I don't hate them that much. :P

If I could buy these games I would. However, I can't. They refuse to sell them to me. Dunno why... even if they did they'd probably ask for $50.

I wasn't actually serious with the swap thing btw :D I wouldn't do that kinda shit.

Well maybe I'd swap them out with the plan of swapping them back later but that's kinda pushing it ;)

I'd much rather you let me borrow this, though. ;p

I wonder if you could dump master system games with this... maybe using a power base converter or similar adapter?

I always wanted a power base converter. If someone has one they'd part with for cheap I'd try it!

There's one in the buying/selling area right now with a few games for sale at a decent price.

Probably not, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

There's an Atari adaptor at the product website, though - so maybe all it needs is a bit of driver updating.

I tried to dump my Mutant League Football proto and ended up with a 512K bin file. Other games worked well though - I'll hook up the Genesis and make sure the cart's still ok. If I have to pull the chips to dump I'll be annoyed.

Renting SNES games? Where do you live?

They still have a few at a video rental place in a grocery store I go to hidden away in the back corner. I doubt anyone actually rents them though.

By the way, I really like the look of that thing. Almost retro-futuristic.

Just FYI, we will be carrying the Retrode soon at our store. Our pricing on this item is not available at this time though.

Mexico. This same rental place has N64, Gamecube and Wii games.

There's still like one or two places that rent NES games in my hometown, too. They're far from where I live, but they still exist.

I have one for sell/trade. I have an SMS and I'd let it go for pretty cheap if it'd help you find out if this would work as I'd be interested to know as well.

A power base converter might work on it since it's mainly just a pass through and you'd just be copying data. If it contained SMS circuitry like the Atari 2600 to 5200 adaptor then I'd say probally not.

It is definitely one of the nicest homemade devices I have seen.

Pm me a price shipped to V8z 6L8 (canada) and I will take it.

That is pretty damn nice looking, and the functionality seems like it would be very handy as well. I'm gonna have to consider picking one of these up in the future. Hopefully he'll start doing the controller options as standard or something.

I thought all interest in this thing died with my thread good to see someone else with it.The guy that made it is thinking about making other pass throughs like....

So if the power base is just a pass through it might work.

There's just a little more to it than a simple pass through. It takes the Genesis's main processor out of the picture and runs the code on the Z80. Since this will just be accessing memory it should work though. There's really only one way to find out for sure.

Matthias from Retrode said this, "Maybe, but not in the current firmware."

Ok, so it loads save files to and from SNES carts in addition to dumping SNES and Genesis roms. However, can it send save files to and from for Genesis games too?

the tekeen 2 game has already been dumped for the snes (doesn't emulate perfectly though) might want to check one of those goodsnes sets for it.

I was just about to say that myself :) Dragon Ball Final Bout hasn't been dumped yet though. Not even the Genesis version. What rental store is this anyways? I'm surprised there's anywhere out there that stil rents SNES games.

I believe so. I just got my unit in last week and have spent a couple of hours playing around with it tonight. The save files appear to be read/write on all the carts, so you can copy them off the carts using the device and copy them back on the same way. The Retrode shows up as a drive letter in Windows, so getting files off of it is a matter of dropping and dragging.

You know, I forgot to post back here a day or two after I made that post. I wrote the creator of the unit and he said it is *not* possible. Apparently, he simply isn't sure how to do it. I think he said it is not as standard as SNES saves or something.

I guess that chalks up an advantage of the Mash Mods device over the Retrode then, as it can write to SRAM on snes carts.

The Mash-Mods device can't write Genesis saves either, so no, that's not an advantage. :P

I will probably never buy a Retrode, because I have the Mash-Mods unit and I like it, but if I were buying such a device for the first time now, it would definitely be the Retrode.

I just wonder if the Retrode works with Street Fighter Alpha 2/Zero 2 or Star Ocean (i.e. S-DD1 carts). The Mash-Mods device does not. :(
