I just bought a used 360 and it's dashboard is from 2008 or early 2009. How do I properly update to the latest version from November 2009? Everytime I follow the directions to update by CD on the official site, nothing happens. Also, does the newest update add backwards compatibility? I bought Panzer Dragoon Orta with the system, but it won't work.

Any and all help will be appreciated! :)

The instructions to update the 360 offline are here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/systemupdates.htm

If you can't update it by CD, try using the flash drive method. It looks like the backwards compatibility update was rolled into the dashboard update, all the links i can find point to the fall 09 update for both.

If you still can't update, you may have to call our good friends in india, the system might be borked.

Yeah, those are the instructions I followed. Havent properly tried the USB method, so I'll try that now.

What do I do if that doesn't work? Panzer Dragoon worked before I formatted, so whoever had the system last regularly updated it.

*UPDATE*

The USB update worked, but all it did was enable avatar creation. The only thing I know to do now is buy a wireless adapter and try to play the game while connected to Live. That's supposed to trigger a BC update, or so I'm told.

I'm trying to update mine via USB. I downloaded the software via the link, copied all of the unzipped files within the folder to the root of the flash drive. Inserted the flash drive into the USB port on the front of the 360, turned it on, and it just goes straight to the dash board.. never asks me to update. Anyone know what's up?

Oh ok, I got it. It said to copy the files from the unzipped folder onto the flash drive. It should have said "copy the folder and it's contents onto your flash drive".. it's all updated now, well as much as it can be I guess without a hard drive and an internet connection ..
