Hey, I'm looking for recommendations on platformers and adventures that have surreal level design. Here's what I know of already:

-Classic-
Bug!
Bug Too!
Mega Man (NES titles especially, namely Elec Man's stage)

-Modern-
Super Monkey Ball series
Super Mario Sunshine (Fluddless levels)
Super Mario Galaxy (most of the mini levels)

Kotaku just did an awesome indie game review for a yet released platformer.

The trailer for the game is on the link above.

I know it's not released, but your post reminded me of the review.

This looks promising... I'm sure you could label this 'surreal level design'

Not sure what you mean by 'surreal level design', but Braid is a very unique modern platformer with an unusual art style and strange time based puzzles. Level designs mimic traditional 2D platformers, but the time manipulation really changes the gameplay .

You need look no further than Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which contains levels which could have only been inspired by fever dreams.

How about some Oddworld, Flash back, or even better Out of this World. Toe Jam & Earl, Metroid, and Blaster Master.

If you think about it, practically 75% of the games out there are abstract in their designs.
