Hi,

I just bought Mike Tyson's Punch Out on Craigslist. I cleaned the pins, but the game is DEAD. It just shows a blue screen when I power it on two different NES's. I have cleaned over 100 NES games and got them working. The electronics look OK (NOT stained or damaged). Anyone have any further suggestions for resurrection?

thanks,

Are you using a official nintendo, or a famiclone/yobo system? Punch out doesn't work on my famiclone systems, and I tried with 2 different copies, I think it's because of the special mmc2 chip. If this isn't the issue, what are you using to clean it with?

I'm using the stanard official NES, not a top loader or a non-nintendo version.

Normally, I'd say use an eraser or cooktop cleaner on the pins, but by the looks of it you've already tried it. Look for burn marks along the lines of the motherboard. I've had a single game like that which caused graphics glitches even when perfectly clean.

The main screen in Mike Tyson's Punch Out is blue, IIRC, so it may actually be booting up to a certain extent.

I thought a blue screen meant that the lockout chip wasn't being mated. You may want to double-check pins 70 and 71 on the bottom side of the pcb. Do you have a gamebit? I recommend taking the cart apart. My own copy of MT Punch Out looked clean, then I pulled it apart and it was still pretty dirty. I prefer isopropyl and a stiff cloth (tech-wipes if you have a source..or an old shirt will work in a pinch).

Thanks, I'll check those pins again. I do have a gamebit.
