People always praise Mario 3, Mega Man 2, FFVII, and the like. What about those unsung no-name, unheard of treasures that are buried beneath shovelware?

I really love M.U.S.H.A. for Genesis. A really good vertical mech shooter where you shoot down Japanese-like enemies. The graphics and music kicks ass. You wouldn't believe the game was released in 1990 if you saw it in action.

Solar Jetman is one that I always like to recommend. It takes everything that made Lunar Lander, Gravitar, and Thrust great and just makes it that much better.

It seems like the majority of my favorites are somewhat under-the-rader games... some that come quickly to mind:

Ranger-X for the Genesis/Megadrive
Battlemaniacs for SNES
MDK, Omikron, POD for PC

MUSHA might be obscure to the casual gamer, but it is a well-loved and well-respected title among Genesis collectors and shmup enthusiasts. I don't know if I'd call it obscure.

One of my most-played games of all time is Gemfire (NES/SNES/Genesis). Kind of like Romance of the Three Kingdoms but fantasy universe and the battles are more fun and the game goes by quicker (at least my perception).

Also, Wardner (genesis) and Psycho Fox (master system)..

There's already quite a few threads devoted to "favorite obscure games" or obscure games. Do an advanced search, and search for the word "obscure" in titles only. Many hits will appear.

Here's the main one that's quite a few pages long. Look there for obscure games.

I thought Roll Away for Playstation was really fun. You're this beach ball and you have to collect a key and reach the exit within the time limit. You have to make your way over a 3D maze of floating pillars dodging spikes and making sure you don't jump off into the sky below. It really starts to get challenging in later levels. If you touch a pill everything gets all dizzy and it's harder to make correct movements.

Guardian Legend is still pretty obscure even by retro gamers but heck I love it. Not alot adventure shoot'em up out there.

Sin & Punishment got on my fav list recently was very impressed how Treasure managed to take a game like Wild Guns to completely new level. Though I'd wouldn't call it a "pick up and play" deals since the control take much time getting used to but it's the best 1200 Wii points I've spent. ;)

Genesis:
Haunting Starring Polterguy - I absolutely love this game. For some reason I have way too much fun running around scaring the family.

PS2: (I know this isn't classic but I gotta mention 'em anyway)
Shadow Hearts - while not totally obscure, it's my favorite RPG and alot of people haven't even given it a chance. Absolutely fantastic

Shadow of Destiny - Awesome adventure game. It was ported to the PSP a few months ago and that gives me the tiniest hope for a sequel. Probably won't ever happen but I can dream

NES:
Wall Street Kid - when I first started collecting I got this one in a lot. I tossed this into the NES to make sure it worked and ended up spending an entire day on it. One of my favorites and I can never quite tell you why.

N64:
Mystical Ninja 64 - I love Goemon's Great Adventure as well but the 3D adventure in this one just called to me. Absolutely love it.

Lynx:
Dracula the Undead - One of my first experiences with adventure games. I credit this game to turning me onto one of my favorite genres. Biggest downfall (and this is a big one) is that you can die...and there are no saves.

Here's a list of a few of my favorite obscure-ish games, both from my childhood and now:

SNES:

Ninja Warriors (Finally got a copy of this a few weeks back. Used to rent the hell out of it)
Blackthorne (This is the only game I played on LodgeNet consoles when I was away.)
Lawnmower Man (I loved the old 3D-like segments. The actual game was okay.)

Genesis:

Gain Ground

N64:

Space Station Silicon Valley (Love this game. GTA with animals!)
Chameleon Twist (Hasn't aged well, but the game is still solid and the music is catchy.)
Rocket: Robot On Wheels (Fun platformer. hasn't aged well.)

QFT - WindJammers and the games that evolved from it (Bang Bead and... er... I've already forgotten the other one) are amazingly fun arcade sports games. Great "Pick up and play" for two players even if you've no idea how to play.

One that fell through the cracks on the PSX was Granstream Saga. Creepy no-face people aside, I thought the plot was decent and did really well with the battle system.

Abadox I havent played this in years but I remember it being one of my favorite NES games back when I was a kid.

Haunting Starring Polterguy: I also have a special place in my heart for this game even if I can't beat it past the second stage...

A more recent one would have to be Eat Lead: The return of Matt Hazard. It wasn't popular and really it is somewhat mediocre but given that it wasn't big budget to begin with that's not all that surprising. I just love the randomness of the enemies and the goofy story enough to overlook some slight repetition and clunky controls.

It's hard to know for sure what counts as "obscure" enough, but here's a few that come to mind:

Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3D (hard as crap, but pretty cool, definitely the most obscure of my list)
Abadox (didn't think this was obscure, but somebody else listed it and I love this game!)
Dr. Chaos
Hydlide
Blaster Master: Enemy Below (not many people seem to have even touchd this, it's really good though, and similar style and worlds to the original)

The only really obscure games that I love are two arcade games from the late 80s - APB by Midway and Snow Bros. by Toaplan. There used to be this restaurant / bar where me and my brother would go to play these games and some other ones when we were teens. Some weekends we would grab lunch there and spend a few hours on some of the games. Good times.

SNES: Soulblazer (Not that obscure but couldn't really think of a great obscure game for this system that I liked!)

I love this game as well and wish more people knew about it.

Kickmaster is another great NES game that never gets mentioned.

I think the only reason these games aren't well known is the fact that they were released towards the end of the NES life span. Those late era NES games are the best though because the gameplay is always so polished.

Some amazing games like The Guardian Legend, Tail Concerto, Gemfire, Military Madness, and Neutopia were already listed. Here are some others that are my favorites.

Evergrace and Forever Kingdom(Evergrace 2)

Before Demon's Souls, not very many people knew From Software as a company. I love Demon's Souls, but honesty like Evergrace and Forever Kingdom a bit more. I love the Armored Core series too but even though they get low sales, I think they're known about even if it is name only.

Vanguard Bandits

One of the lesser known Working Designs game. Not very obscure to fans of the company though. Tactical RPG with characters in robots usings swords, axes, etc. Great story, great character development, sexy ninja in maid's outfit, what's not to love? There are multiple paths to take with multiple endings, the hardest one is getting everyone to hate you by getting them killed a lot. Great ending though as you *spoiler.*

Kessen 2 and Warhammer Shadow of the Horned Rat

Kessen 2 is basically an original storyline based on events of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The storyline is amazing first off, but the there is the battles. Battles are done on a huge map which you have multiple armies of soldiers that you send around the battlefield trying to complete the objective, all in real time(except when the large map is open.)

Then there's Warhammer which is well known by the name Warhammer(board game.) I don't think this game itself is very well known though. You go through battles on a large map, send your armies to attack in real time.

Both of these games are similar. Play nearly the same actually. Warhammer gets ridiculously hard at the end of the game and I can say more than likely you'll never beat the last battles without getting extremely lucky because you are overpowered by a ton and probably don't have enough max units in each of your armies. Kessen 2 is hard but is able to be completed, though obviously easier the better your strategy in the game is.

Archon

Two player is where this game is at(a must actually.) The difficulty against the CPU makes the game near impossible to win. It's similar to chess but battles are done action based on an arena sort of map. If I could find some one who likes this game I'd play it a lot more.

Cyborg Justice for Sega Genesis. A side-scrolling beat-em-up with Cyborgs. It didn't get much press, but I had alot of fun playing it back in the day.

Rocket Knight Adventures (a great platformer) and Crusader of Centy (the Genesis alternative to Legend of Zelda) were two other Genesis games I liked that seem to be pretty obscure.

Wasn't Plok in development a while before Rayman? I remember reading an interview with one of the Pickford guys a while back and they said the game was released around the time of the wave of "cute platform game characters", which is why it didn't get much attention. They have the unreleased "Fleapit" games which started production in 1990 too, so maybe if they were to get sued they could easily back themselves up. They also said there were many parts that didn't make it into the first game, so they may get around to making a new one someday. Well, we can hope.

How obscure does a game have to be really. There are a lot of older games people are listing that I've played frequently(Kabuki Quantum Fighter and the ones I mentioned people listed earlier for example.) It's easier to judge games SNES and onward on how obscure they are because nearly everyone knows of the older good games now I'd think or maybe it's just because they're so old I've heard about people talking about them more often than newer games.

Off the top of my head I rarely, if ever, hear people talking about these three games(extremely good games btw.) Daria has an entire PSX RPG collection(possibly) and she's never played Wild ARMs XF when it was brought up(though someone else also mentioned something of it.) Run Saber is a ripoff of Strider but is better in my opinion.

Seriously?

It's a very, very relaxing game. If you don't come in with many expectations it can actually be really enjoyable. I played it for 3 hours straight once. Don't judge it by it's kid friendly look.

I haven't played Gurumin yet but I think I really need to. I own it, it's still shrink wrapped... I just never use my PSP for more than music and emulation.

Until Nintendo Power started promoting the hell out of it, Shantae was always my choice for favorite obscure game.

Stubbs and Cthulhu are the reasons I even have Xbox systems. Both are great and excessively odd games.

I'll always remember the first time I got to the police chief boss battle. Zombie Dance Party!

You misunderstand. I wasn't questioning your enjoyment of the game. I was questioning its status as "obscure". I really don't think a Pokemon game qualifies as obscure. Quite a few other games mentioned in this thread have been really "WTF" to me (Archon? Killer 7? Uh, no.), but that one took the cake.
